Hello again! It is that time of year when the Board has had several meeting and we have put our agenda in motion. This year is no different, as we have several volunteers that have joined us and George Lukaitis has been asked to join our Edu-cation Committee and I cannot

wait to put him to work. Diane McArdle is next for joining a com-mittee we have not forgotten you.

At this point, I have some very good news and some bad news. First, the product show is only a few weeks away. We are getting an enormous response to the Technical seminars and the room is filling up fast, so please email me to reserve a spot. The semi-nars are back to back so you can attend both and afterwards walk into the Product Show and talk to your favorite sales people.

The Plumbing classes are going well with great atten-dance. I will be handing out the ASPE applications

to all the students who are not already members. You may not be aware of this but our Chapter is pay-ing for an associate membership for one year upon successful completion of the program.

Now the BAD NEWS, there is none HA! I saved it for last hoping you would read my article then drop your eyes down to the bad news last. Did you fall asleep or just Yawn a little, doesn’t matter we on the Com-mittee of the Product show look forward to seeing our members walking around absorbing new stuff like a dry sponge.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Cloud Ceilings and Fire Sprinkler Pro-tection.

Cloud Ceilings are not new but have become popular in commer-cial, industrial and institutional build-ing designs especially in educa-tional occupancies. They are typi-cally used in large open area rooms to hide mechanical equipment and/or to improve acoustics. Sometimes they are just used as ar-chitectural features for aesthetics

purposes. “Any ceiling system installed in the same plane with horizontal openings to the structure above on all sides is considered a cloud ceiling. Cloud ceil-ings consist of panels separated by gaps that sit be-neath the structural ceiling of a room or space. Pan-els range in size from discrete ceiling panels with large spaces in between to full room coverage (continuous) with small gaps at the perimeter wall location.” Cloud ceiling provide unique challenges to the de-sign and installation of automatic sprinklers. For the past few years I have been dealing with the increase

in popularity of these types of ceilings with respects to automatic sprinkler system designs. NFPA 13 “Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems” does not provide specific guidance on the installa-tion of sprinklers in reference to cloud type ceilings. As have most designers, I’ve just followed the NFPA 13 obstruction rules with regards to placement and spacing of sprinklers in these types of ceiling construc-tion usually with sprinkler protection being provided both above and below the cloud ceilings. For the past several years The Fire Protection Re-search Foundation in cooperation with the fire pro-tection firm Hughes Associates, Inc. have been con-duction research and studies on the issue of sprinklers and cloud ceilings. The findings of the project have resulted in the development of some rules and guid-ance for the placement of sprinklers with respects to cloud ceilings. Accentually the rules determine when sprinklers are required above & below cloud ceiling or one or the other locations based on the ceiling tile sizes and gaps between the tiles. The findings of this project are being used as the technical basis for pro-

MEMBERSHIP NEWS Mayor Charles M. Ritter passed away peacefully at his home in Ivyland Borough on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. His journey has ended at the age of 72.

Born in Stamford, CT, Charlie was the son of the late William and Beatrice Ritter. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Charlie was an accomplished industrial plumbing and heating sales representative at The James Martin Company for which he was rec-ognized for his many achievements. He served the people of the Borough of Ivyland as

mayor for the past 15 years.

Since 1980, Charlie had been an avid golfer and member of Old York Road Country Club. Throughout his golfing years Charlie achieved several holes-in-one. He was the club's Man of the Year in 2013. He was a former member of the Feasterville Business Association and the Holland Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship award. He forever was a New York Giants football fan.

Charlie was the devoted husband to Lee for 28 years. He was the loving father of Kathy, Carolyn, Jackie (Scott), and Alan (Victoria). He was the beloved grandfather of Tristan, Devon, Nicholas, Gabrielle, Jordan, and Hailey. He is also survived by his brother Bill (Paige), his sister Ginger (Robert), his brother-in-law Carmen Esposito and several nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his "little buddies" Moses and Scooter. Charlie will be greatly missed by everyone.

I have worked in many offices and reviewed many many pro-jects over the past forty years in plumbing systems manage-ment. In almost every office one of the first things done, is to develop a good list of general notes, abbreviations and of

course symbols. These items become an essential part of the lead sheet that is used on almost every project. The lead sheet, being the first plumbing or fire protec-tion drawing of a project, usually has other pertinent information too, like a drawing list, a key plan and other general stuff. We are often judged by our peers and contractors bidding the work by the sophistication of the lead sheet.

In the all Auto-CADD or manual drafting era, the lead sheet symbols were fairly simple to follow and adhere too. Many offices had symbols that follow the

mechanical engineering drafting guide with a few home grown symbols thrown in for unique systems. Once we turned the page to the second sheet, it was like we never saw the lead sheet in our lives. Gate valves be-came ball valves, and vise-versa. Check valves were missing the directional arrows or were often shown in reverse direction. The plug valves on a natural gas pip-ing system were shown as gate valves. Piping system directions showing vertical ups and downs needed words to describe the system direction. The main ris-ers were not identified on plan and sometimes not even identified on riser and flow diagrams. But we had the symbols on the lead sheet. Abbreviations were not al-ways consistent to the list developed for the lead sheet. And to make matters worse, we often spelled out the entire word or words that could be abbrevi-ated. Sometimes the words were even misspelled.

Now we have REVIT, the perfect picture for all of our piping system needs. Everything is exact and perfectly detailed on the plan drawings. Well al-most perfect. Now instead of a gate valve symbol we have a perfectly detailed picture of a gate valve shown exactly to scale, displayed on the screen in front of us. That may seem the end all of drafting perfection but not quite. At 1/8” scale printing, you can’t always determine what is really being shown. Many items show up as a blob of ink on the paper. Rises and drops in a horizontal pipe run almost disap-pear except for a dark spot in the pipe. In the proc-ess piping world where detail and exactness is needed, the plan drawings are generally set up at 3/8” scale or larger for visual clarity and the necessary dimensions that are required. Also, sections were often used for additional clarity. This leads me to wonder if we are trying to do process type drawings without process

drawing rules and drawing scales? I have seen many REVIT drawings that looked great, especially at ¼” scale. The big problem is, we often don’t have a sym-bol list for these devices.

But even with the REVIT plan-view drawings, we still need riser and flow diagrams to be able to un-derstand the full extent of the individual systems on the project. These diagrams still rely on the conven-tional piping, and drafting symbols from Auto CADD. We should never lose sight of the need to use all of these REVIT and Auto CADD drafting symbols consis-tently throughout our projects.
