FORMER USSR MEMBER

A. • Kazakhstan is the raw material supplier to the

economy of the USSR• Kazakhstan supplied the front and rear areas

of the USSR with military and strategic raw materials and food during the Second World War of 1941-1945

• Kazakhstan became one of the leading industrial centers of the former USSR and held fourth place among the other republics

• Under the Soviet regime, Kazakhstan began intensive work on the development of the raw-materials base and in the extraction of all kinds of mineral wealth. Powerful mining enterprises were built across Kazakhstan.

INDEPENDENCE

B. • The attempted coup further weakened the

Soviet government, which could no longer control the government for self-rule in the nation’s republics. Within weeks, Kazakhstan and all of the other Soviet republics declared independence from the Soviet Union.
