Mini-Annotated Bibliography

Introduction This Annotated Bibliography was created by a team of educators from TDSB and TCDSB as part of the Asian Heritage Month Curriculum Sub-Committee 2010. Drawing on a recommended book list from Another Story Bookshop, a comprehensive list of elementary level texts was created that embodied the Asian culture and experience. The books presented in this bibliography can be commonly found in our two school systems or our local libraries. This initial reference tool includes themes that are embedded in the texts, recommended curriculum expectations for reading that these texts could help to meet, and "Teacher Prompts", which can be helpful in creating assessment tasks in order to meet the recommended curriculum expectations for a chosen grade level. A goal for the Asian Heritage Month Committee has been to embed Asian Heritage into the curriculum throughout the academic year. It is the hope of this Sub-committee that teachers will consider using some of these rich and engaging texts that express the Asian perspective as they plan their Teaching/Learning Critical Pathways for Reading. By using these texts, not only will the learning experiences of their students be enriched, but also personal experiences of some of their students will become validated.
