HistoryIn 2010, a request was made by the then Minister Of Tourism & Culture, Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen to Mr Rolf Michael Engel to come up with ideas for a new branding of Malaysia in particular for the island of Langkawi.

Mr Engel began by initiating AECOM or Asia Earth Conference Malaysia Sdn Bhd 2010 to realize the ideas he compiled.

He is the Founder and a Consultant for the creation and production of the individual events produced under AECOM.

MissionAECOM events aim to create awareness for our ecology, environment, sustainability and the reduction of carbon footprints.

This AECOM does creatively and entertaining, with the aim to attract the masses.

The idea of holding these events is designed to put Malaysia in particular Langkawi on the world map, as an outstanding travel destination of cultural richness, modernity and environmental consciousness.

WHAT IS ASEAN CYSThe idea to hold a contest for young scientists in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is based on the event mooted by JUGEND FORSCHT (Young researcher/scientists) which takes place every year in Germany for the last 48 years. It was founded to encourage students to have a platform in creating their scientific ideas & to realize their dreams.

Since 25 years now, all the countries of the European Community adopted this idea and from then on every year the EUCYS (European Union Contest for Young Scientists) is held.

24 states of the EU takes part in this prestigious competition with 10 other Associated states joining in. International participation are in the likes of Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, USA and South Korea.

Hence AECOM would like to propose this idea to the MTDC - Malaysian Technology Development Corporation, to spearhead and launch this competition in Malaysia and later take it to the next level with the participation of ASEAN nations.

This contest will provide MTDC with vital information on the ability and interest of our students from the ages of 10 to 21 years old in the following disciplines:

•Living & Working Environment •Physics & Engineering•Chemistry & Biology •Information Technology & Mathematics•Mobility & Traffic •Earth & Space Science

These statistics and informations would be of interest for the Ministries of:

- Science, Technology and Innovation - Natural Resources and Environment- Human Resources - Transport- Communication and Multimedia - Education and Higher Education- Energy, Green Technology and Water

“We are looking for the scientists of tomorrow!” Henri Nannen, the editor-in- chief of stern magazine, coined this slogan when launching the first Jugend forscht contest in 1965. This is as true today as it was then. In science, technology and engineering there is an unbroken demand for highly qualified people. Jugend forscht makes an important contribution to identifying and supporting the highly gifted people we need in business and academia.

What is EUCYS?The EUCYS – European Union Contest for Young Scientists is an initiative of the European Commission that was set up in 1989 with the goal of promoting cooperation and interchange between young scientists and guiding them towards a future career in science and technology.

The event is an annual exhibition of the finest work developed by young scientists in many different scientific fields; it enables the best young minds of different countries to compare ideas and admire each other’s work, as well as to compete with one another at European level; it is therefore of great interest to the international and local communities, as well as the press.

The EUCYS is, furthermore, an opportunity for young scientists who have gained prestige in their home countries to meet others with similar abilities and interests, and to be guided by some of the most prominent scientists in Europe. The outcome is a significant endorsement by the European Commission of the work and development achieved in each participant country, which it is hoped will guide and promote more and more young people to careers in science and technology.

An international contest, the EUCYS comes within the Science and Society activities that are managed by the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, and which strive to build a harmonious relationship between scientific endeavour and the European society at large.
