American MomentsIt’s time for pumpkins and autumn leaves, crisp cool air and wool sweaters. The fall season is now in full swing in Westchester County, and there is no better place to celebrate Thanksgiving than in the Hudson Valley. ArtsWestchester has plenty in store for us this season. Whether you are interested in spending your Saturday afternoon at an art exhibition, spending your Monday

in a dance class or taking your child to a Wednesday morning storybook class, our County has something for everyone. I feel fortunate to have this resource in our County to inspire our residents to participate in the arts. ArtsWestchester's monthly ArtsNews publication highlights the many cultural opportunities provided for the enjoyment of residents throughout the County. Many of us remember exactly where we were when John F. Kennedy was shot. For me, the scene is emblazoned in my mind. I was in my kitchen spooning mashed banana into my toddler’s mouth. The radio soothed some Sinatra… perhaps it was The Summer Wind. From bliss, I went into panic mode as the announcer’s voice came on. Disbelief. This can’t happen here. This is America.

This was a moment when our hearts were torn apart watching a little boy salute his president-father’s coffin, an image captured by one of America’s premier photojournalists, John Shearer. This 1963 image and others are on view in an exhibition called American Moments:

Photographs by John Shearer at the Neuberger Museum of Art. Shearer’s ability to tell a story in one image is part of his mastery, as in the detail of a veiled-in-black Jackie Kennedy who is frozen in time by Shearer, a prize-winning Look and LIFE magazine photographer. This particular photo is riveting, but more so for those of us who believed as we were taught, that World War II was the war that was fought to make the world safe for democracy.

Shearer’s incisive eye was there again at the funeral of Martin Luther King. There are vivid photographs of the march from Athens to Atlanta and the historic rage that seems to rival any depiction of the recent events at Charlottesville. Shearer was there for those of us who reveled in the poetic uttering of a sensitive prize-fighter named Muhammad Ali. He recorded truth for those of us who hoped that prison reform would follow the Attica riots. His legacy is assured for those of us who struggle to identify what exactly has changed in fifty years.

At this exhibition, you can relive the street gangs, the antiwar protests and the trailblazers such as B.B. King and Michael Jackson. As you wish, you can stay in the moment or you can flash back and remember how things were. Or, you can choose to flash forward and weigh the balance between how things have changed and how they have stayed the same. Ever an optimist, I will look for, hope for, and work for…better times.

Six artists have been selected to each customize a set of “Pop-Up Library” kiosks that will be placed throughout New Rochelle. Local residents are encouraged to “take a book, or leave one” from the kiosk libraries' book collections. These designed boxes, a collaboration between New Rochelle Council on the Arts, My Brother’s Keeper New Rochelle and the New Rochelle Public Library will be situated in different locations throughout New Rochelle in order to encourage literacy and promote community. Participating artists include Carol Bowen, Cristina Cerone, Alvin Clayton, Laura Heiss, Aston LeMelle-Thomas and Stephanie Lombardo. Kiosk locations will include Feeney Park, Flowers Park, Hudson Park, Huguenot Park, Lincoln Park and Ward Acres. In addition, pop artist Charles Fazzino created a larger installation at the Metro North train station.

ArtsWestchester’s current exhibition, Brick by Brick: The Erie Canal & the Building Boom, is inspired by the shared story of the Erie Canal and the Hudson Valley brickyards. Contemporary art installations and photographs are on display along with artifacts and personal

narratives that relate to the history of the region’s brick industry. Several programs related to the exhibition’s subject matter will take place this month. On November 3, brick hunters and collectors will tell stories of their adventures along the Hudson River. Audience members are encouraged to bring up to seven marked bricks to share and swap. On November 10, spiritual singers and storytellers will narrate a story that delves into the history of slavery, brickyards and an African American church in Haverstraw. Both events take place amongst the exhibited artwork in ArtsWestchester’s gallery in White Plains. Brick by Brick remains on view through January 19. Brick by Brick and its programs are sponsored by New York State Council on the Arts and Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1. ArtsWestchester is launching a new semester of its internship program. This winter, each intern will have the opportunity to gain experience from specific departments of interest in order to acquire skills, such as project management, public relations and team collaboration, which are transferable to their future careers. In addition to working closely with ArtsWestchester staff members on department-specific tasks, interns will participate in a series of professional development activities and workshops. These include hearing more about the organization’s cultural affiliates program, learning how to conduct a gallery docent tour, write a blog post and more. Complimentary admission to arts and cultural events will sometimes be available, at which the intern can help to build awareness of the arts in Westchester. A final presentation will be given by each intern as well. Internships are available in areas such as grants and government relations, arts in education, communications, special events, gallery and more. ArtsWestchester continues its series of professional development workshops with a set of free educational talks. On November 1, staff members from A.R.T./New York will discuss the application and guidelines for its Creative Opportunity Fund, a statewide theater regrant program. On November 15, artists will learn about opportunities available through New York Foundation of the Arts. This includes Fiscal Sponsorships that are available to artists and emerging

arts organizations of all disciplines. It also includes 2019 fellowships for the following disciplines: choreography, music/sound, photography, playwriting/screenwriting, and architecture/design/environmental structure. Art$WChallenge Matching Grant Program Raises Funds for the Arts

Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins and the Westchester County Board of Legislators recently joined ArtsWestchester to announce the Art$WChallenge, a matching grant program that provides funding to support arts and culture programming in Westchester County. Through December 14, ArtsWestchester with support from Westchester County Government, will match new contributions up to $5,000 to any of 48 eligible cultural organizations. Since 2007, the Art$WChallenge grant program has raised more than $4.7 million for the arts. Past grant funds have assisted in providing free concerts by the Yonkers Philharmonic, bringing schoolchildren to the Neuberger Museum of Art and more. According to Latimer: “The arts are a vital component of our local and regional economy, supporting thousands of jobs and adding millions of dollars of revenue back into our communities.” For a list of eligible organizations or to donate, visit artsw.org/artswchallenge.

Acclaimed artist Maya Lin aims to highlight the human impact on nature in a series of new site-specific installations that explore the geology and topography of the Hudson River. Maya Lin: a River is a Drawing, on view at the Hudson River Museum, extends from the Museum’s lobby, throughout significant portions of its galleries, and onto its outdoor courtyard, summoning its visitors to interact with various installations. Guests can walk amongst bamboo reeds for a 3D depiction of the Hudson River basin or descend the stairs under a wire sculpture that floats across the gallery space.

The post-minimalist artist’s presentation of scientific data is meant to connect with the viewer on a visceral and emotional level. These fragile yet meticulous pieces work as building blocks to a dialogue about environmental awareness. According to the exhibition’s curator, Miwako Tezuka: “Maya Lin is able to give an artistic shape to climate change and its many impacts on our environment so that we may arrive at a confluence of nature and humanity.” In one work, Lin compares Manhattan’s likely future based on targeted carbon-emission levels versus unchecked emissions.

Lin, a Presidential Medal of Freedom winner who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., will present a talk about environmental leadership with Jeffrey Sachs, professor of economics, on November 11. Additional programs include a tour with Assistant Curator Ted Barrow (11/3), a lecture titled “Gender, Water and Human Rights” (11/14), a presentation about the Hudson River as a life force (11/18), and more. Axial Theatre’s 20th anniversary season brings to the stage, Senescence, a new production by its founding artistic director Howard Meyer. The title refers to the process of deterioration with age, a theme that runs throughout the play. In the blue-collar town of Linden, New Jersey, this process is accelerated due to the devastating effects of chemical toxicity.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker and director James Fauvell, the story of this oil refinery town is told through three childhood friends who have lived n Linden their entire lives: they grew up in the town, their parents died in the town, and they still live there as the story unfolds. The threesome encounter a stranger, an alleged prophet named “J,” who upends their lives as he aims to get the refinery to change their production and dumping practices. Senescence runs from Friday through Sunday on November 3-18, with previews on November 2 and 3. For more info, visit axialtheatre.org.

Steffi Nossen Dance Foundation’s annual choreography showcase spotlights pre-professional dancers alongside professional choreographers in a performance of new works at the Emelin Theater. The November 10 showcase features nine works by different artists. Riedel Dance Theater’s Second Story Dance Project presents a work, set to the music of Dvořák, which depicts a portrayal of psychological anguish as two souls intertwine, one supporting the other (choreographed by Jonathan Riedel). A work performed by members of the American Jazz Company presents both classical and contemporary dance at once by exploring the roots of jazz while contrasting its movements with the romantic music of Chopin (choreographed by Spencer Pond). The work of DiMauro Dance explores the body as a vessel for showing emotional extremes, from grace to aggression (choreographed by Jessica DiMauro Marks). Works by other choreographers, in addition to performances by Steffi Nossen Dance Company, will round out the program. A post-performance Q&A with choreographers, dancers and audience members serves a dual benefit, giving artists feedback about their work based on audience perception, and also providing the audience with insight into the choreographic process. On November 10, cellist Inbal Segev will join the Symphony of Westchester as a guest soloist. Led by the Symphony’s founder and artistic director Barry Hoffman, Segev and the Symphony will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85. Of the composition, Segev says: “I feel spent after playing it… It is an elegy for a world that is no longer, and was written as a response to the great war – World War I. I believe the message in this work is timeless and universal.” Also on the program will be Dvořák's Symphony No. 9, Op. 95 in E minor “From the New World.”

Segev has performed as a soloist with orchestras around the world, from Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to Bankok Symphony. The Symphony of Westchester, now in its 22nd season at Iona College, is a professional orchestra of more than 60 musicians. The performance will take place at Iona College’s Christopher J. “Frank’s Picks” is a monthly music column in which music journalist, author and radio producer Frank Matheis helps readers, through his personal recommendations, to find their way through the many concerts and performances that take place in Westchester County. Here’s a preview of Frank’s November picks:

I’m With Her is a virtual super-group of multi-Grammy Award-winners, and this performance at the Tarrytown Music Hall is a gig not to miss. If you have someone moping around the house wailing that the times of superb folk singers are over, and that good music has ended, this will revive even the biggest skeptics. This trio combined some of the best young women singer-songwriters of our time, each individually highly successful. They deliver timeless American roots music with exceptionally powerful collaborative songwriting prowess, beautiful harmonies and intelligent lyrics that will grab you by the heart. Aoife O'Donovan is an Irish-American singer, guitarist and songwriter, best known as the lead singer for the progressive bluegrass/string band Crooked Still. The golden-voiced Sarah Jarosz is a mandolin virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist and an amazing singer songwriter. Fiddler and ukulele player Sara Watkins was a member of Nickel Creek with her brother Sean Watkins. The trio is getting well-deserved recognition and exuberant accolades, including on NPR and the New York Times. As part of its folk arts series, Pelham Art Center will celebrate the Hindu festival of lights with its annual Diwali event on November 18. As Hindus believe that light is the symbol of health, wealth and peace, this festival is meant to signify the victory of good over evil. The Diwali event will open with a performance of Indian classical dance by Sadhana Paranji. This “Kuchipudi Margam” dance will also encourage audience interaction when Paranji teaches hand gestures and footwork associated with the traditional dance form. Following the performance, visitors will participate in two hands-on arts activities. During the first workshop, guests will create scroll works based on the traditional Patua painting technique. The second workshop will demonstrate how to paint in the Sohari style with coffee and tea stains. The Diwali event will also offer henna body art, a temporary tattoo of intricate patterns that is made from henna leaf paste that dyes the skin for several days. Yonkers Film Festival (YoFiFest) presents its sixth annual celebration of film on November 2-11. The ten-day festival screens more than 150 films, from feature movies to student works. Focused showcases highlight films by women filmmakers, students, Westchester natives, members of the LGBT community and more. International and locally-made films provide screenings for a gamut of plotlines, including an inventor who creates a time machine to win back an ex-girlfriend (Jasper, 11/4), a profile on New York City street artist Fumero (Fumero-ism: the Grafstract, 11/8) and an Alexander Hamilton re-enactor in Philadelphia (A Man Full of Trouble, 11/10).

Most screenings will be accompanied by Q&A talkback sessions. In addition, a series of workshops led by industry professionals introduces audiences to topics such as crowdfunding and marketing. After a red carpet reception launches the opening night celebrations, the parties, receptions and meet-and-greet sessions continue throughout the festival, allowing filmmakers and fans to mingle. Ten-Day Festival in Yonkers Presents Local and International Films

On November 3, Mount Vernon-based artist Alicia Appleton will host a free leather-making workshop at the Mount Vernon Public Library for participants of all skill levels. Appleton, who is the designer of the leather accessories brand Amber Poitier Inc., will teach students how to hand-sew and construct their own mini leather tote bag. The two-hour class will commence with an introduction of the basic tools and materials required. This includes the laser-cutter that is used for cutting the bag pattern and the vegetable-tanned leather, which is a utility leather typically used for high-end products like holsters, shoes and equestrian saddles. During this instructive demonstration, students will also learn how to build a bag pattern, hand-sew the leather pieces, punch holes and, lastly, buff and polish the leather. Participants, with Appleton’s assistance, will then implement these techniques to create their own unique 10" x 12" mini bag. Participants will be able to take the final product home. This program is sponsored by one of ArtsWestchester’s Mount Vernon Arts Initiative Grants, which are made possible with support from Westchester County government. Many people know of Motown music greats like Diana Ross, but not the story of her rise to fame, nor the record label that fought against prejudice to bring now-beloved music to American audiences. This month, the Revelators Dance Troupe will present Motown: My Way, a musical that highlights not only the music, but also the story behind it. The November 16-18 production at the Doles Center in Mount Vernon will include singing, dancing and acting from The Revelators’ entire company, with members that range in age from six through 28. Audiences will watch Ross transform into a pop star diva, witness the Supremes' rise to fame, and observe Motown Records co-producers Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson build the label’s significance as it reshaped the music industry. Mount Vernon Announces “Arts, Culture and Heritage Master Plan“The City of Mount Vernon has conducted a study that aims to engage the arts community by creating an arts infrastructure that will support the projects of local artists. This “Mount Vernon Arts, Culture and Heritage Master Plan” has identified needs and opportunities that will be taken into account in order to achieve this goal. According to Mayor Richard Thomas, “Mount Vernon has always had a unique arts history and we are committed to creating new opportunities for our arts community.” For instance, the City will host its first Mount Vernon Artweek in December, which will consist of a holiday arts market at which visitors will find unique holiday gifts made by emerging artists.
