Disability Awareness Month

Many people know October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month but what many people do not realize is that it is also Disability Awareness Month. Individuals with disabilities are the largest minority group in the United States and are also a group that any of us can become a part of at any time. Most people are not born with their disability, it ends up being something that they acquire sometime in their life and may end up being lifelong. Many people have suffered from temporary disabilities such as a sprained ankle, which requires crutches. During that time individuals can experience how it would be to have a life changing disability. Fortunately they have the ability to heal unlike many others. When we look around we see a world that is tailored to those who are able-bodied. It can be difficult to realize how much able-bodied individuals are catered to over those who do not have that luxury. We have the ability to stand up and help those who are at an institutionally created disadvantage. We all have the ability to become allies for one another. Something to remember when encountering an individual with a disability, no matter the severity, is that they are human just like you. We tend to think of individuals with disabilities as asexual, unable to have dreams and passions, and that they are just preoccupied with their disability. This is just as ridiculous as believing that someone with brown hair is completely preoccupied and defined by their hair color. This could not be further from the truth. The easiest realization is that we are so alike rather than different. Offer help but do not be pushy. Everybody wants to do things on their own sometimes. It is also okay to ask question. It is okay not to understand everything. It is not alright to ignore people because we think that we have nothing in common with them. We might actually surprise ourselves when we open up our mind to what “able” can mean. Since disabilities effect so many Americans let’s take this month of October to celebrate our differences and make ourselves aware of how we confront things that are foreign to us. I encourage us to take time and learn about some of the ways that we can help those who have disabilities in our community.
