REGISTERED CHARITY NUMBER 1136565
TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2012
History and Objectives
The Trust was created by a deed dated 25 February, 2010.
The object of the Trust is the education of the general public and in particular, but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing the increase in their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of any matters relating to the life and works of Arthur Ransome.
The Trustees may, in their discretion, for a period of 21 years from 25 February, 2010, instead of applying the income of the Charity in any one year, accumulate all or any such part of such income, and may then apply the whole or any part of such accumulated income in any subsequent year as if the same were income of the Charity arising in the then current year.
Management and Governance
The Trust Deed requires that the Trustees hold at least two meetings each calendar year. Trust business may also be conducted between meetings, subject to ratification at a subsequent meeting. The Trustees met on 14 January and 21 April, 2012.
The Trust Deed stipulates that additional and replacement Trustees shall be appointed by the existing Trustees, subject to a maximum number of 10.
The Trustees have kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on Public Benefit when reviewing their decisions, activities and future plans.
Geraint Lewis is an Executor of the Arthur Ransome Literary Estate, which owns Arthur Ransome’s intellectual property rights. The Trustees have procedures in place to manage any potential conflicts of interest.
Activities and Performance
From January to May, 2012 the Trust’s Voyages of Discovery mobile information display toured a number of UK regional theatres, in support of the Children’s Touring Partnership’s production of Swallows and Amazons. The Trustees are grateful to the Children’s Touring Partnership, the host theatres and their respective staff for facilitating the display.
In early 2012 the Trustees looked in detail at options for A Ransome Home, the Trust’s main, long-term goal of establishing, developing and operating a permanent Arthur Ransome Centre at several properties in the southern Lake District, in particular at Lanehead, a house to the east of Coniston Water with strong historic links to Arthur Ransome. The Trustees concluded that Lanehead was not a practical option. However, they believe that examining the operational, planning and funding requirements for Lanehead and other properties will help the Trust greatly, as and when other potential locations for a Ransome Centre emerge.
In June the Trust had a short Temporary Moorings exhibition, focussed on Arthur Ransome’s novel Pigeon Post, at the Holker Hall Garden Festival. The event provided a useful opportunity to seek feedback and ideas from the general public, with both local residents and Lake District visitors attending the festival.
The Trustees continued to explore options for developing Model Students, the Trust’s project that aims to develop Ransome-themed educational study materials.

Financial Review
The results of the Charity’s activities are contained in the attached financial statements.
The level of income for the Trust continues to be a concern. Incoming resources were sufficient to cover the Trust’s planned activities, with a modest decrease in overall funds of £66. Looking ahead, the Trustees continue to recognise the need to increase income significantly, if the Trust is to commit to, develop and fulfil its future plans.
The Trustees therefore began to consider their options for fundraising in more detail during 2012. The Trust benefitted from the donation of professional fundraising advice, in respect to raising the funds that will be required to acquire a property for an Arthur Ransome Centre. The Trustees recognise that this is a major challenge, not only because of the total resources that will be required, but also because of the challenges associated with attracting support before a suitable specific property is known to be available, set against unpredictable, but potentially very short, timescales in which any such suitable property is likely to remain available once identified.
In response to this the Trustees recognised the need to increase the Trust’s immediately available resources for its A Ransome Home project. They therefore established an initial appeal, Putting Ransome on the Map, which will aim to attract up to £50,000, with options for donations both to the Trust’s unrestricted funds and to a restricted Ransome Home fund. Development of the appeal was seriously disrupted in the second half of 2012 by a lengthy illness to one trustee, but the Trustees intend to further develop and publicise this appeal in 2013. The appeal raised £870 in 2012.
In 2010 the Trustees set an initial level for reserves at £500. This target was achieved during 2012. The Trustees recognise the need to keep the level of reserves under regular review as the Trust develops.
There are no funds materially in deficit.
Future Plans
The Trustees anticipate that research and project development for A Ransome Home will continue to be a major element of the Trust’s work in 2013. They also intend to continue exploring opportunities to develop the Trust’s other established projects, with a view to bringing these forward when resources permit.
The Trustees will continue to review their options for promoting awareness of, and support for, the Trust. In particular they will be actively examining options for further staffed activities, building on the experience gained at the Holker Hall Festival in 2012.
Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities
The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the Charity for that period. In preparing these financial statements the Trustees are required to:
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity and enable the to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 1993, the Charity (Accounts Reports) Regulations 2008 and trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
Independent Examination
In accordance with the exemption available to small charities, the Trustees have opted not to have the accounts for the year ending 31 December, 2012 independently examined.
Declaration
The Trustees declare that they have approved the Trustees’ report above.

ARTHUR RANSOME TRUST NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2012
[1] Accounting Policies. These financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice, “Accounting and Reporting by Charities”, published in March 2005 and applicable accounting standards.
(i) Fund Accounting
Unrestricted funds are funds available for use at the discretion of the Trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the Charity.
Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with restrictions imposed by donors, or which have been raised by the Charity for particular purposes.
The Trustees established a fund on 2 June, 2012, for incoming resources restricted to the Trust’s A Ransome Home project, which encompasses expenditure to develop, establish and maintain an Arthur Ransome Centre in the southern Lake District.
(ii) Incoming Resources
All incoming resources are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA) when the Charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.
Gifts and donations are only included in the SOFA when the Charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources.
Incoming resources from tax reclaims are included in the SOFA at the same time as the gift to which they relate.
Gifts in kind are accounted for at a reasonable estimate of their value to the Charity, or the amount actually realised. Gifts in kind for resale are included in the SOFA only when sold or distributed. Gifts in kid for use by the Charity are included in the SOFA when received.
Donated services and facilities are only included where the benefit to the Charity is reasonably quantifiable, measurable and material. The value placed on these resources is the estimated value to the Charity of the service or facility received. The value of services provided by volunteers has not been included in these accounts.
Investment income is included when receivable.
(iii) Resources Expended
Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the Charity to pay out resources.
Costs of generating voluntary income include the costs incurred in promoting awareness of the Trust and its objectives, such as fundraising materials and advertising, and the costs of administering gifts and donations.
Fundraising trading costs include the costs of goods sold.
Charitable activities costs include the resources used by the Trust to meet its charitable objectives. It includes the direct costs of the charitable activities, together with those support costs incurred to enable the activities to be undertaken.
ART Trustees’ Report & Accounts 31 December 2012 - Page 9 of 14
Governance costs include the costs of preparation and examination of statutory accounts, the costs of trustee meetings, and the cost of legal advice to the Trustees on governance or constitutional matters.
Support costs are allocated directly to the activity to which they relate where possible. Remaining support costs have been apportioned to the relevant activity categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
(iv) Assets
Tangible assets are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year and cost less than £50. They are valued at cost or, if gifted, at the value to the Charity on receipt.
Depreciation has been charged at the following rates:
Exhibition Display Equipment & Artwork 20% straight line; Office Equipment 25% straight line.
Stock is valued at the lower of cost or market value.
