home, hearth & handwork toursThe Bush House Museum, Asahel Bush II’s 1878 Italianate farmhouse, focuses on Victorian Era handwork and hand-painted china throughout September. During a guided tour of the Museum, view a variety of handmade linens and quilts, along with china painted by Bush’s youngest daughter Eugenia (1862-1932).

The special 45-minute guided tours will run Thursdays-Sundays, September 6-30, at 1, 2, 3 and 4 pm. Tickets can be purchased next door to the Museum at the Bush Barn Art Center. For larger groups, please call 503-363-4714 in advance. Admission rates and additional information about the Museum can be found online by visiting www.SalemArt.org/programs/bush-house-museum.

This event is sponsored by Victorian Faire with Tea in Aurora.

three artists collaborate across 2,500 milesThe Joe, Jim, and Pedro Show highlights the individual journeys and collective histories of three artists through creativity and friendship. Their backgrounds are diverse: Joe B. Milosevich spent his formative years in central Illinois, James R. White was born in Portland, Oregon, and Pedro J. Palacios is a Mexican-American artist and a natural-born citizen.

A natural collaborator, Joe is the central link in the trio. Previously, he has teamed up with Jim for a reflection on pop culture, and with Pedro to create a poignant exhibition exploring Mexican-American immigration issues. This most recent exhibition, at the Bush Barn Art Center September 8-October 28, is a timely narrative combining both of those previous collaborations into one.

Joe, Jim and Pedro all create mixed-media work that is both technically well crafted and steeped in deeper meaning. They are united in their desire to understand their personal experiences, and how they fit into the world at large.

A reception for this exhibition will take place on Friday, September 7 from 5:30-7:30 pm.

volunteer spotlightWelcome the newest addition to the SAA Board of Directors, Evelyn Sanchez. An advocate for the creation of art by everyone, not just artists, she started off by volunteering with Community Arts Education programming in the Annex. She believes that art is “a wonderful vehicle that anyone can use for a variety of purposes, whether they be personal or social.” In her own art, Evelyn focuses on painting and mixed media work.

Evelyn holds a Bachelors Degree in Art with a Minor in Art History from Western Oregon University, and works as a Case Aide for Marion County’s Child Welfare programs. In addition to her visual art practice, she also holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Martial Arts, which you may find out if you tell her you dislike cats.

grantor spotlightThe Salem Art Association is thrilled to be awarded $20,000 in grants from three Oregon Foundations to support our fourth year of delivering the Arts & History Immersion Project (AHIP) to fourth-grade students.

Funding for the 2018-19 school year comes from Trust Management Services, LLC ($10,000), The Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust ($5,000), and the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund ($5,000).

AHIP focuses on high-poverty Tile I schools with limited access to cultural resources by providing free field-trips to the Bush House Museum and the Bush Barn Art Center. Field-trip activities provide students with an opportunity to journey back through time and relive a piece of enduring Oregon history, and also much needed hands-on experiences viewing and creating art. Fourth-grade Social Science standards are incorporated into Museum tours, bring to life the students’ current studies.

We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to partner with Trust Management Services, LLC, the Robert D. and Marcia H. Randall Charitable Trust, and the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund. Without these three important funders, it would not be possible for SAA to deliver this high quality cultural experience.
