The materials are due back at the school by Aug. 24 Sterling Police Department The Sterling Police Department (SPD) was scheduled to conduct Swearing In Ceremony on this morning at the Sterling Emergency Communications Center, declaring 6-year-old Clare Handke “Chief for a Day.” Clare was to be sworn in for the day by Deb Forbes, City of Sterling Clerk. The certificate was made possible when young Clare’s grandparents – Harold and Cindy Schmale - purchased the honor at the annual Your Heart Our Hands Annual Red Cross fund raising auction held in March. “Chief Handke,” the daughter of Julie and John Handke, will be on hand at tonight’s (Aug. 12) SPD’s second annual Community Appreciation and Support from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Park Security Pavilion area. Community members who attend the event are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. Free hot dogs with chips will be served along with light refreshments. Patrol vehicles and other equipment will be on display for viewing and demonstration, Child ID Kits will be available (please bring children and get an all important Child ID kit done for them), SPD Explorers will be present to help out and provide information on the Explorer Post, and bike registrations will be available. Neighborhood Watch information will also be provided, and there will be a meet and greet with SPD officers. The evening will conclude with the K-9 presentation where participants can watch “Glock” and his handler put on demonstrations while learning how the SPD K-9 team enhances public safety. Tompkins’ Suzuki sustained extensive right front damage while Klippstein’s pickup truck sustained slight to moderate front right damage.
