WELCOME MESSAGE
The Smith Family is proud to again be the
official charity partner for Around the Bay 2017
and we’d like to congratulate Around the Bay
on this, their 25th anniversary celebration!
Since 1993, Around the Bay riders have supported
The Smith Family and to this date almost $11
million has been raised to help disadvantaged
Australian children with their education.
This year we’re aiming to raise $1m which
will provide 1,736 children with sponsorship
so The Smith Family can give them the tools
and support they urgently need to succeed
at school and break the poverty cycle.
But we need your help to make this possible
so make sure you ask your friends, family
and work colleagues to sponsor your ride.
Just log on to aroundthebayfundraising.com.au
to share your fundraising page
or make a donation.
To all the riders who’ve raised funds for The Smith
Family through their ride, my sincere thanks.
Your support makes such a big difference.
Good luck on the ride and I’ll
see you at the finish line!
Dr Lisa O’Brien
CEO, The Smith Family
THE SMITH FAMILY
1993 was shaping up as a pretty sleepy year
in Australia. With spring almost upon us
the highlights of the year were watching a
strange movie called Reckless Kelly starring
a strange-named actor Yahoo Serious
and the final episode of an angst ridden
television show called A Country Practice.
No wonder come October a group of brave and
brilliant people decided to liven things up by
launching a bike ride around Port Phillip Bay.
We expected a few hundred hardy souls to
sign up for the 210km monster challenge. We
were shocked when 2,700 said, ‘I need some
excitement, count me in!’, and sad we had to say
no to another 1,000 because the ferries were full.
This year will be the 25th time people have got
up in the dark on a Sunday to pedal Around
the Bay. Over the years, Around the Bay has
enabled tens of thousands of people to either
start or rekindle their love affair with bike riding.
So I’d like to thank the hundreds of thousands
of people who’ve helped and participated all
these years. Thank you for showing us what’s
possible. Thank you for toughing it out last
year in the wind, in 2007 in the heat, and in all
those other years Melbourne’s served up its
famous licorice allsorts of weather in one day.
So whether today is your first, fifth or 25th
Around the Bay, as you go over the West
Gate Bridge, taste the salt of the ocean
or grab some lollies from a super stop,
please take a moment to think of those
inspirational souls who 25 years ago decided
life was meant for living not watching.
