The 46 points were the most given up by the Black Knights (9-3) in a half this season - it also was more points than they had given up in any of their previous three games. Matt Bell hit a 3-pointer and converted on a three-point play to cut the lead to 47-26 early in the second half. But Falls hit another 3-pointer to spark a 15-2 run as Notre Dame moved ahead 63-30. The 88 points by the Irish were the most allowed by Army this season. The previous high was 72 by VMI. The 47 points by the Knights also was a season low. The previous low was 56 points against Cornell. The loss ended a six-game win streak for the Black Knights, their longest winning streak since the 1984-85 season. Russell Carter added 12 points - ending a streak of three straight games with at least 20 points. Luke Harangody added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Irish - who had a 45-22 rebounding advantage. Falls was 9-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Bell had 15 points to lead Army, which shot a season-low 35 percent. The 15 3-pointers by the Irish were just two shy of the school record set against St. John’s in March 2004. Jarell Brown, who entered the game averaging 17.6 points a game, fi nished with fi ve points, making just 2-of-10 shots, including 0-of-4 from 3-point range. Falls scored on a layup and a pair of 3-pointers to ignite a 19-4 run early that gave the Irish a 26-10 lead.

YOUNG GUNS II► The Black Knights had at least two freshmen in the

starting lineup in all 31 games last season, even utilizing a fi rst fi ve of all plebes on twice.

► That group of plebes included the unanimous Patriot League Rookie of the Year (Kyle Wilson), the fi rst Army plebe to hand out 100 assists in 30 years (Dylan Cox) and the Academy single-season blocked shot record holder (Kevin Ferguson). SCOREBOARD WATCHING► Army’s chances for success increase dramatically

when scoring at least 70 points. The Black Knights own a record of 45-24 in the last 69 games when scoring at least 70 points. Army is 188-39 (.828) all-time when scoring at least 80 in a game.

► Sixty (60) points is usually Army’s magic number. The Black Knights are 63-46 in their last 109 games when reaching the 60-point mark. Con-versely, Army has won just 14 of its last 70 games when not scoring at least 60 points (14-56).

► Army has dropped 15 straight when scoring less than 50 points. The Black Knights have lost 116 of their last 117 games when failing to reach the 50-point mark.

► The Black Knights scored at least 90 points an Academy record fi ve times last season. Army had reached the 90-point mark four times during the 1963-64 and 1993-94 seasons.

RECORD CHECK► Current players in the Army career record book.

SHOOTING STARS► Army’s success has been largely predicated on

their ability to shoot the basketball. The Black Knights are 38-9 since the start of the 2004-05 season when making at least half their shots.

► Since the start of the 2004-05 season, Army is 86-70 when shooting at least 40 percent from the fl oor and 14-97 when shooting below 40 percent.

► Army has lost 24 straight games when shooting 33.3 percent or worse.

► Army is 57-12 in its last 69 games when outshooting its opponent.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE► Dating back to 2008-09, Army has posted a

33-12 record when allowing foes less than 63 points.

► The Black Knights are 10-63 in their last 73 games when giving up at least 70 points. The Black Knights have lost 38 of their last 40 games when allowing 80-or-more points.

► In its last 53 losses, Army has allowed an average of 75.5 points per game. In its last 37 victories, Army has given up just 63.2 points per game.

VOLUME SHOOTING► Army took an Academy record 44 three-pointers

against Air Force and has totaled 135 attempts through the fi rst four games (33.8).

► The number of shots taken has helped make up for a lower than usual accuracy rate. Army is at just 26.7 percent through four games. The Black Knights have shot at least 35.5 percent from deep in each of the last three seasons.

► Since the start of 2009-10, Army has averaged 21.7 three-point attempts per game (2,693/124 games). The Black Knights are 15-23 in that span when taking at least 25 three-point shots.

CHRISTL CLEAR► The Black Knights have been able to make Christl

Arena a tough place for visiting teams. Of Army’s 54 wins since the start of the 2009-10 season, 32 have come on the banks of the Hudson.

► Army is 32-24 overall at home in that span.► The Black Knights have been particularly strong

at home during non-conference play. Army is 21-7 at home versus non-Patriot League foes in the last fi ve seasons. The Black Knights have not lost more than two home non-conference games in a season since Zach Spiker’s arrival.

Since taking the reins of the Army men’s basketball program in 2009, Zach Spiker has taken the pro-gram to heights not seen in nearly three decades at West Point. The 2013 Patriot League Coach of the Year brought winning basketball back to the banks of the Hudson, and now turns his attention to even higher aspirations. Spiker is one of just four Army coaches to win at least 50 games in their fi rst four seasons, joining Bobby Knight, Mike Krzyzewski and George Hunter in the exclusive club. He has put his name along-side Army’s legendary coaches since arriving in the Hudson Valley. Spiker’s 25 wins through his fi rst two campaigns were the most by a Black Knight sideline boss since Kyrzyzewski, and he became the fastest Army coach to the 20-win mark since “Coach K” won 20 of his fi rst 36 games at West Point. His 14 wins in his fi rst season were the most by an Army rookie head coach since Knight. The 2012-13 season was the program’s high-water mark under the fi fth-year head coach. The Black Knights posted a 16-15 overall record and an 8-6 mark in Patriot League play. It was Army’s fi rst winning record since the 1984-85 season and rep-resented the fi rst time the Black Knights won eight league games since the 1986-87 squad went 8-6 while competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Con-ference (MAAC). He was rewarded for his efforts with the 2013 Patriot League Coach of the Year Award. Spiker also was named a fi nalist for the 2013 Skip Prosser Man of the Year and the Hugh Durham Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major coach. Spiker was one of only seven coaches to receive at least one vote for the Associ-ated Press National Coach of the Year honor. In addition to its overall win and conference win totals, Spiker guided the Black Knights to a pair of historic winning streaks. Army’s fi ve straight victo-ries from Feb. 13-27 marked their longest Patriot League run, while four straight conference road wins from Jan. 30-Feb. 23 also represented an Academy record. Spiker and the Black Knights served notice of their ascent in 2012-13, hosting a Patriot League quarterfi nal game for just the second time since the league went to its current seeding format in 2007. On top of the team’s overall mark, Spiker has put his stamp on the Army-Navy rivalry. The Black Knights have captured “Star Game” victories in three of his fi rst four seasons, including the last two. Spiker is the fi rst coach to take home the Alumni Trophy in consecutive seasons since a

three-year run by Krzyzewski from 1976-78. He and Krzyzewski are also the last two Army coach-es to win at least three Star Games. Spiker’s fi rst win against the Mids in 2010 snapped the Black Knights’ seven-year losing streak in star contests, and the 2013 win in Annapolis marked the fi rst time the Black Knights won the Alumni Trophy on Navy’s home fl oor since 1992. Spiker’s teams have won four of the last seven match ups with their arch rival, including a two-game sweep in 2011-12, the Black Knights’ fi rst season series victory since win-ning both match ups in 1991-92. The Morgantown, W.Va., native had guided the Black Knights to unprecedented success in the Patriot League. Spiker’s four-year conference win total is higher than any of Army’s previous coaches since joining the Patriot League in 1990. His teams have produced such signature wins as a 20-point victory over 2011 champion Bucknell, the Bison’s only conference loss that season, and back-to-back road wins at Colgate for the fi rst time in league play and a fi rst for the program in nearly 40 years. Spiker has brought an exciting brand of basketball to West Point, utilizing an up-tempo approach that takes advantage of the team’s shooting prowess. Through the fi rst 24 seasons with the three-point shot, Army’s team record stood at 188, but under Spiker’s tutelage, the Black Knights have made more than 200 three-pointers in each of the last three seasons, including an Academy record 264 in 2010-11. Army has scored more than 2,000 points and averaged at least 67 points per game in each of the last three campaigns, while the 2012-13 team’s scoring average of 72.4 points ranks seventh on the Black Knights’ all-time ledger. It was the team’s best scoring effort since the 1994-95 season. Spiker’s system has produced several individual milestones, highlighted by the development of Ella Ellis. In his four seasons under Spiker, the 2013 graduate reached fi fth on Army’s all-time list with 1,585 career points. Ellis is the only player in Army history to amass at least 1,500 points, 450 rebounds (466), 150 assists (161) and 40 blocked shots (45). He was Army’s fi rst two-time member of the All-Patriot League First Team since 1996 and captured second-team All-NABC District 13 honors in consecutive seasons, a program fi rst since all-time leading scorer Kevin Houston (1986-87). Fol-lowing the season, Ellis was invited to a pre-draft workout with the NBA’s Washington Wizards. Through four seasons, Spiker has not been afraid

2013 PATRIOT LEAGUE COACH OF THE YEAR

to utilize freshmen. This philosophy was most evi-dent in 2012-13 when at least two plebes started in all 31 games, including a run of three games in which freshmen accounted for all fi ve starting spots. Kyle Wilson posted 403 points, the third most by an Army rookie, en route to his unanimous selection as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Wilson won a league best fi ve Rookie of the Week certifi cates as Army became the only team in Patriot League his-tory to have three different players earn the honor in consecutive weeks. Spiker’s teams have boasted at least one Patriot League All-Rookie Team pick in a program record three straight seasons, including two in 2013. Spiker’s charges have also excelled in the class-room. Nate Hedgecock was Army’s fi rst Academic All-America selection in 22 seasons, earning second-team honors in 2011, and became the fi rst Black Knight to win the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. In the Fall 2011 semester, Army has placed multiple players on the Dean’s List, and the program scored in the 70th-80th percentile in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate report, scoring above the national Division I average. Prior to his arrival at West Point, Spiker was instru-mental in helping Cornell’s recruiting efforts that culminated in the Big Red winning three consecu-tive Ivy League titles (2008-10), including two with Spiker on the staff. A 2000 graudate of Ithaca College, Spiker earned his bachelor’s degree in communications. He re-ceived a master’s degree in sport management from West Virginia in the spring of 2004. Spiker and his family reside at West Point.

LEXINGTON, Va. — Army started its 2013-14 sea-son with a 79-68 loss to Air Force in the fi rst game of the All-Military Classic presented by USAA at VMI. Freshman Tanner Omlid made his career debut with a team-high 18 points, including four three-pointers. The Black Knights could not overcome a rough afternoon from the fi eld, shooting 33.8 percent (23-68) overall and 27.3 percent (12-44) from behind the three-point line. Army’s 44 three-point attempts were a program record. The previous mark was 36 set on Nov. 22, 2011 versus Bryant. Army led by two points at the half and by as many as nine with just more than 13 minutes remaining, but Air Force used a 32-10 run to take a 13-point lead, its largest of the game, with 3:36 left. Army got as close as eight for the remainder of the game. Kyle Wilson joined Omlid in double fi gures with 10 points. Larry Toomey had a team-high nine re-bounds, while Wilson, Maxwell Lenox and Tanner Plomb each had three assists. Tre Coggins led the Falcons with 20 points, while Kamryn Williams posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Max Yon scored 12 points, including a run of nine straight, during the decisive run. Darrius Parker also added 12 points. The Fal-cons outrebounded Army 40-30 to help overcome 18 turnovers. Army used a 13-3 run to claim a 15-9 advantage with 12:16 left in the fi rst half. After an Air Force bas-ket ended the Falcons’ nearly four minute scoring drought, Omlid buried his fi rst career three-pointer to push Army’s lead to 18-11 with 9:13 to go. Three-pointers bookended a 13-2 Air Force run that fl ipped the lead back to the Falcons at 24-21 with 6:02 to go in the opening stanza. Air Force led 26-23 with 5:32 left when Omlid tied the game with a three-pointer that jumpstarted a 7-2 Army run to end the half. Army went into the locker room with a 30-28 edge. Plomb opened the half with a three that started a 15-8 spurt to start the half. Lenox’s career-best sec-ond three-pointer put Army on top 45-36 with 13:18 to go before the Falcons’ game-winning run.

LEXINGTON, Va. — Kyle Wilson posted his eighth career 20-point game the Black Knights used a 33-15 fi rst-half run to overcome an early defi cit en route to an 84-69 win in the consolation game of the All-Military Classic. Army trailed 15-14 with 12:02 to go in the fi rst half, but a three-point by Matt Gramling gave Army the lead for good and ignited the decisive run. The Black Knights took their fi rst double-digit lead on a three-pointer by Kyle Wilson with 7:05 to go and stretched their advantage to 17 on a three-point play by Dylan Cox with 2:15 left on the fi rst-half clock. Army led by 13 at halftime and was able to extend their lead to as many as 21. Wilson was the only Army player in double fi gures. Ten other players scored at least one point, led by nine points from Tanner Plomb and Josh Herbeck. Herbeck hit three (3-5) of Army’s nine three-pointers in the game.
