BACKGROUNDER

Alabama Rural Ministry is looking for mature, young adult Christians to fill summer staff

positions and serve the Lord in real, hands-on ways.

Summer staff members will run a Christian camp for two months. Their goal is to build

meaningful, Christ-centered relationships between each other, the youth and the families with

whom they interact.

Staff members are assigned to one of two sites in Sumter and Macon counties in Alabama

based on their experience, staff position and expertise. They are trained over a two-week period,

including certification in first aid and CPR.

There are three types of staff positions available, and these are construction coordinator,

day camp coordinator and site coordinator.

Construction coordinators serve as the facilitators for the home repair work teams. Day

camp coordinators will coordinate Bible lessons, recreational activities and educational programs

for children. Site coordinators manage the site and communicate with the work teams.

Staff members also work together to design evening devotional programs for the youth

teams and maintain the sites and flow of activities.

Staff members receive a $1,600 base scholarship at the end of the summer. Through

individual fundraising, staff can raise their salary up to $4,000. Staff will also receive a $20

stipend per week for housing, travel expenses and meals.

Applications are available in the fall of each school year and can be found online at

• ARM welcomes youth groups, college groups, adults, intergenerational and local

volunteers near the communities.

• Our main office is in Auburn, Ala., but we serve primarily in Sumter County and Macon County.

• Youth mission camps are usually in the summer, but we also host teams during spring

What is ARM’s mission? We believe Christ’s love must be expressed in action to people in need. ARM is a hands-on ministry, responding to people through Christian love with an emphasis in housing repair and children’s ministry. What is the application process for summer staff? Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2011. Interviews will be conducted as applications are received. It is possible for qualified candidates to be offered a position early, and positions will be finalized when all applications have been received. How are summer staff members compensated? Primary compensation is in the form of a scholarship paid at the end of the summer. The base of the scholarship is $1,600, but staff members have the opportunity to raise their salary to $4,000 through individual fundraising. Compensation also includes a weekly stipend of $20, housing, travel reimbursements and most meals. What summer staff positions are available? Each summer we hire two site coordinators, six construction coordinators and three to six day camp coordinators. What does the summer staff do? The ARM summer staff runs a Christian camp for two months. The staff works closely to form a supportive, encouraging Christian community among the team and the incoming volunteers. Staff members work together to maintain respective sites and the regular flow of activities. Each team member will strive to support the ministry through teamwork in planning, implementing and sharing team devotionals and worship settings, as well as worship and reflection with the various youth groups.

What are the responsibilities for each position? There is one site coordinator for each site—Livingston and Tuskegee. The site coordinator serves as the team captain and ideally has previously served on staff or been a volunteer. Site coordinators must demonstrate leadership skills, great maturity, management skills and public relations skills. Construction coordinators serve as facilitators for the home repair work teams. These coordinators plan and prepare construction projects and maintain the construction budget for each team. Construction coordinators also serve as points of contact for the families being served and schedule staff and work team visits. Day camp coordinators work together and with incoming volunteer teams to coordinate activities for children from low-income, underprivileged families. These coordinators also prepare Bible lessons, enrichment activities and field trips in an effort to help the children being served form and grow a relationship with Christ. What is the time commitment for summer staff members? All staff members are expected to attend two weeks of training. Site coordinators have an additional three days of training. The first week and a half of training is spent learning about ARM, individual job requirements and developing evening programming for the youth volunteer teams. Training is held at the Tuskegee location and all members are certified in CPR and first aid. The end of training is held at each site to set up for the first camp. Teams begin arriving the first week of June and the last team leaves the final week of July. Site cleanup and breakdown occurs the first week of August. All staff members return to the Tuskegee site at the end of the summer and participate in a mandatory staff retreat.

Craig Solomon

Alabama Rural Ministry Summer Staff Member

Craig Solomon worked as an Alabama Rural Ministry (ARM) summer staff member in the summer of 2010. During this time, Solomon had the opportunity to help families in need while growing closer to God. !ARM is an organization committed to meeting the needs of low-income families in Alabama through home repair and construction, children’s day camps and building relationships across cultural, racial and age boundaries. ARM’s summer staff works closely with families in either Sumter County or Macon County each year. !Solomon grew up in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and graduated from Hillcrest High School in May 2007. He is currently pursuing a dual degree in finance and political science at Auburn University. After he graduates, he hopes to pursue a job in international development while focusing on business development and venture philanthropy in third-world countries. Solomon first heard about ARM at church one Sunday. He picked up some brochures after church and went to the website to learn more and sign up. Because this sounded like a challenge, he was very anxious to get involved. Although he had no construction experience, he wanted to get out of his comfort zone while placing his faith in God. Along with meeting and helping families while working for ARM, Solomon also had the chance to help lead high school students in devotions and Bible studies. At the same time he was helping families by repairing their homes, the families were helping him in his spiritual life. ARM is always looking for summer staff members just like Solomon. Page Ledbetter Alabama Rural Ministry Administrative Assistant

Page Ledbetter first worked with Alabama Rural Ministry (ARM) on a special service day they host each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day while she was an active member of Auburn Wesley Foundation, a campus ministry. She enjoyed the MLK Days so much she decided she would apply for a summer staff position the next summer. She has most recently taken the position of administrative assistant with the ministry. ARM is an organization committed to meeting the needs of low-income families in Alabama through home repair and construction, children’s day camps and building relationships across cultural, racial and age boundaries. ARM’s summer staff works closely with families in either Sumter County or Macon County each year. Ledbetter grew up in Dadeville, Ala., and graduated from Dadeville High School in 2005. She then attended Auburn University, a short drive away from Dadeville, and graduated in May 2010 with a degree in architecture. Ledbetter also enjoys taking pictures and recently started painting in her spare time. She hopes to learn how to play the piano in the near future. After Ledbetter applied for a position with the summer staff, she left Auburn for a semester abroad in Rome. She did a video interview with ARM via Skype and was hired as a construction coordinator for the summer of 2009. Her favorite aspect of being on summer staff was being able to see God work through the youth that came to the work sites. The experience was so rewarding for Ledbetter, she served as a volunteer staffer the following summer. A typical day for Ledbetter while on summer staff consisted of working with the kids on site during the day, then returning to the base to cook, play games, and worship or study the Bible with her team. The community-building characteristic of working for ARM was easily the main reason she returned the following summer as a volunteer and continues to volunteer with ARM when she isn’t working as administrative assistant today. ARM is always looking for summer staff members just like Page. Staff members can work as construction, day camp or site coordinators. A SUMMER STAFF MEMBER ENJOYS WORKING FOR ALABAMA RURAL MINISTRY

It is a known fact that many families across the country need food and shelter, but who

helps these families physically and emotionally? Alabama resident Craig Solomon is the perfect

example of someone who does. Solomon worked as an Alabama Rural Ministry (ARM) summer

staff member in the summer of 2010.

Solomon was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Ala., surrounded by loving and caring

friends and family. Knowing how blessed he was, Solomon was always looking for ways to help

others.

After he graduated from Hillcrest High School in May 2007, he applied to Auburn

University. He is currently pursuing a dual degree in finance and political science.

During the summer of 2009, Solomon worked as a counselor for a children’s nature

conservancy in Great Fall, Va., named Camp Fraser.

The next year, Solomon heard about ARM during church one Sunday. He learned their

work helps meet the needs of low-income families in Alabama through home repair and

construction, children’s day camps and building relationships with individual families.

Immediately after church, he picked up a brochure and went to their website to get more

information. He signed up to be a summer staff member for the following summer. The main

thing that appealed to him was the challenge.

“It was encouraging to think about repairing homes all summer long in the Alabama heat

for families who might not be able to do it for themselves while talking about Christ with them,”

said Solomon.

Even though he had no construction experience, Solomon looked forward to getting out

of his comfort zone and placing his faith in God. In addition to this experience, he had the chance

to lead and work with high school students in devotions and Bible study.

Solomon’s favorite part about ARM was the families he met along the way. While he was

expecting to help these families, he came to find they also helped him in his spiritual life.

“One lady in particular, Mrs. Randolph, was a true inspiration,” said Solomon. “Her

husband, a quadriplegic, has been confined to a wheelchair for the past five years, and she takes

care of him everyday with a huge smile on her face as she talks about what a blessing everything

in her life is.”

Solomon is now finishing his last few semesters at Auburn University. After he graduates

in December 2011, he hopes to pursue a job in international development while focusing on

business development and venture philanthropy in third-world countries.

Working for ARM has definitely changed Solomon’s life for the best. He hopes many

others will take this chance of helping people in need. He will continue to do his best to help

those people and will be forever grateful for this experience as a summer staff member.
