who are concerned with art documentation, that is, the accumula
tion, classification, and dissemination of art information in a
variety of formats. It is also hoped that the new title will attract
manuscripts for publication from individuals who might be less interested in publishing in a newsletter. Finally, the Executive
Board wants to avoid the use of the acronym ARLIS/NA, Its use in the title of the Society's magazine excludes the unitiated, leaving them uninformed about the Society and its purpose.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY & NEWSLETTER EDITOR
Taking precedence in my life during the past few months, even over the ARLIS/NA conference, was the arrival of my daughter Janna (see box below) and the decision of our family to relocate in Tucson, Arizona (see front page). Despite the traumatic circum stances surrounding Janna's birth, I was able to make a wonder
fully speedy recovery and to be back on the job in less than two weeks, but I do apologize for any delays or failures in communica tion on my part that occurred during the months of March and
April. As Newsletter Editor, I would like to extend a hearty thanks to
all conference session recorders and other contributors to this issue. I don't think I have experienced to date another Newsletter for which the majority of material promised came in on time and in such good shape with so little prodding on my part, which was
especially appreciated during this unusually hectic time for me. I also want to welcome aboard this year's new SIG and TOL
column editors and to extend an offer of whatever help or guidance you might need from me. The same is true for the two new columns we will now be featuring regularly?Continuing Education and Reference Aids?which I know will provide much useful informa tion to us all. Finally, I encourage all chapter officers to become active contributors to the Chapter Idea Exchange. This has been a source of much valuable data over the past year, but we cannot
expect Joan Benedetti to carry the ball alone forever. As Executive Secretary, I would like to encourage speedy
responses to 1981 membership renewal notices?this is the last Newsletter issue that will be sent to non-respondees?and to our second Art Libraries Journal subscription offer. Many of you have
expressed interest in and approval of this plan, but so far we are
only slightly more than halfway to the number of subscriptions needed to make this a viable enterprise. Subscribers who sign up now will receive all 1981 ALJ issues.
1 also want to thank again the many of you who have sent in contributions to the Membership Directory fund and to explain once more why the information in the 1979/80 edition is not as up to date as you might like. When our former Executive Secretary failed to deliver acceptable copy for the 1979 Directory, Kathy Martinez kindly volunteered to take over the job of editor. Since we were then in the process of severing our relationship with J.D.
Ferry and transferring ARLIS/NA headquarters to Iowa City, and because at that time 1980 membership records were in very poor condition, it was decided that the only way to produce a usable directory before the end of 1980 would be by using 1979 records, which Kathy could work with in Washington while I tried to revise and update the 1980 records in Iowa City. There was no feasible way for these two activities to be coordinated across 1,500
miles without a great loss of time, and it is for this reason that the
1979/80 edition does not include new members who joined in 1980 and does contain some out-of-date addresses. We regret the omis sion of any 1979 members in good standing, but Kathy was com
pletely reliant on the records provided by J.D. Ferry, which were not 100% complete or accurate.
Although the 1979/80 Directory of Members is thus obviously flawed in some ways, we hope you will agree with the Board's decision that it was preferable to produce an improved update of the 1978 edition as quickly as possible rather than to wait perhaps another year for an edition produced in Iowa City. We are cur
rently exploring the most economical ways in which to utilize our
now-computerized membership records to produce future mem
bership directories on a more regular and speedy schedule and within the limits of our budget.

Janna Jeffcott Parry
For all of you who have been so kind as to inquire about Janna's progress, either to me or to members of the Executive Board, the facts as of May 1 are these: Janna was born on March 2 in Portland, Oregon, where my husband I were visiting friends on the way home from San Francisco. She was nearly three months premature and weighed only 2
pounds, 10 1/2 ounces. During the first two weeks the
prognosis was not very good, but since then she has made remarkable progress. As of the moment, she weighs just 5
pounds and has been moved from an incubator to an open crib. If all continues to go so well, we expect her toj?in us in Tucson on June 1 for the grand opening of the new
ARLIS/NA headquarters.
ARLIS/NA CONFERENCE HOTLINE The 10th Annual ARLIS/NA Conference will take place at the
Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston on February 20-24, 1982. The con ference theme will be "Cooperation and Sharing" (or something
more zippy if we can come up with a better title). The tentative schedule is as follows: Saturday, February 20 - set
aside for possible pre-conference programs as enumerated below
during the day, with the convocation in the evening; Sunday, February 21 - full conference begins with meetings starting at 8 A.M.; Monday, February 22 & Tuesday, February 23 - conference
sessions; Wednesday, February 24 - conference ends officially at noon, with possible post-conference visits to Providence, R.I.
and/or New Haven, Conn., for those going on to CAA in New York or otherwise interested. Suggested topics for the pre conference workshops are to date: Reference Aids; Bibliographic Instruction; AACR 2 Revisited (from the public service point of
view); and Self-Perception and Professionalism of Art Librarians. Conference planning is still on-going, so if you have suggestions
for the pre-conference block or for any other sessions or aspects of the Boston meeting, please communicate them to the Conference
Program Chairperson at either: Art & Design Library, Box U-5E, University of Connecticut Libraries, Storrs, CT 06268 (203) 486 2875 or 25 Grove Street, Willimantic, CT 06226 (203) 456-0087. If you have suggestions about local arrangements for the conference, please communicate them to Richard McElroy at the University of Massachusetts, Harbor Campus (Boston). Wanda Dole, Eastern Regional Representative, chaired the
Chapter Idea Exchange meeting held at the San Francisco confer ence, and you will find a report on that session elsewhere in the Newsletter. Herewith, a few notes from the conference pertaining to this column. The big question in my mind was WHO WILL BE THE NEXT
EDITOR OF THIS COLUMN, and I fully expected to be mailing off my file to someone else as of this writing. Despite a hard sell, there was no volunteers in San Francisco, but it is still not too late. Please write to me, your Regional Rep, or Pam Parry, if you have a change of heart!
