It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Stockholm, host city of the 2017 UEFA Europa League final. The city and its impressive Friends Arena has already staged a major European football occasion in recent times – the UEFA Women’s EURO final between Germany and Norway in 2013 – and we are looking forward to another memorable encounter four years later.

The UEFA Europa League has established itself as an attractive competition on the European football landscape, not only because it delivers European club football at its best, but also because of its unique diversity. The competition has been given additional appeal by the awarding of a place in the UEFA Champions League to the team which emerges victorious in the final. You, the supporters, are the lifeblood of football, and we hope that you will witness an unforgettable match, played in a spirit of respect and fair play.

Thanks to the Swedish Football Association, the city of Stockholm and all of the fans who will contribute to making this final an evening to remember.

Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA President

Welcome to Stockholm!

I am proud and honoured to welcome you to my hometown, Stockholm, a city built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges.

Stockholm is a city where technology is a part of its DNA and music and creativity have earned it international renown. It is a city of openness and diversity, a city of gender equality, a city for motivation and personal development. We set goals that are ambitious and hard to reach. We work hard to achieve economic growth by social inclusion and we need to push even harder to retain our competitive edge in a world of globalisation and digitalisation.

This openness and willingness to embrace the world around us has been a guiding light for our city, its inhabitants and its businesses for over a century. It has shaped us and made Stockholm one of the strongest and most popular cities in the world. Today we are Europe’s fastest-growing city. Recently, Bloomberg ranked us as the second most innovative city in the world.

Stockholm is a sustainable city that is aiming to be completely fossil fuel free by 2040. We were the first European Green Capital.

It is also aiming to become one of the leading event cities in Europe and a natural choice for organisers of international sports, cultural and entertainment events. Several arenas have been built in recent years, including Friends Arena, the venue for this year’s UEFA Europa League final, while the city itself is a natural arena for water activities and outdoor events.

I hope you will enjoy your stay in our city for the UEFA Europa League final!

Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm

Welcome, all football friends, to Stockholm, the beautiful capital of Sweden and to our new Friends Arena national stadium.

The 2017 UEFA Europa League final will be the seventh UEFA club competition final to have been played in Sweden. IFK Göteborg won the UEFA Cup in 1982 (against Hamburger SV) and 1987 (against Dundee United) and on each occasion played their home leg at Ullevi in Gothenburg. Ullevi has also hosted two Cup Winners’ Cup finals. In 1983 Aberdeen beat Real Madrid and in 1990 Sampdoria won against Anderlecht. In 1998 Chelsea won the Cup Winners’ Cup against Stuttgart at Råsunda Stadium, our former national stadium. Then in 2004 Valencia beat Marseille 3-0 in the UEFA Cup final hosted at Ullevi as part of the Swedish Football Association’s centenary celebrations.

At national team level, Sweden successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1958, the UEFA European Football Championship final round in 1992, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1995 and a fantastic UEFA Women’s EURO 2013, with a tournament record crowd (43,000) attending the final at the Friends Arena. Along the way, we also co-hosted UEFA Women’s EURO 1997 with Norway.

It is almost impossible to overestimate the value of organising international matches and tournaments. The rush of energy, anticipation, excitement and delight that comes from everything surrounding big matches of this kind are what it is all about – for visitors and the local population alike.

We are really looking forward to the 2017 UEFA Europa League final and hope you will have a great time!

Karl-Erik Nilsson, Swedish Football Association President
