Are You Ready forThe Upcoming Mobile SEO-Pocalypse?
What Google's upcoming algorithm change means for your business and how to avoid the negative consequences.
Google's Big Change So it begins this April! As Google previously announced:
"Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results."
In other words, if your website is not properly optimized and mobile‐ friendly, you risk
to experience the promised " significant impact", which otherwise can be described
as a huge drop in mobile search standings.
How important this can be? Consider these statistics:
According to several reports, the mobile ranking update would have a bigger impact on Google search results than the Penguin and Panda updates.
60%of total digital media time is spent is on Mobile platforms
85 Billion Local mobile searches (85.9 billion) are projected to exceed desktop searches (84 billion) for the fist time in 2015
Why Mobile is so Important Having a good mobile website is not a luxury or just an accessory anymore‐ it's an integral part of your business that can drive significant results.
However, if you don't do it right, it can also hurt your business and alienate your customers.
• 61% of users most likely will not return to a mobile site they had trouble
with.
• 40% said they'd go to a competitor's mobile site instead. It's not a surprise then considering the proliferation of mobile search that Google wants to accommodate customers' expectations by promoting the websites that offer better user experience. As they put it:
"Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices."
Things to Keep in Mind There are three things about the algorithm change that need your special attention.
First, it is applied "worldwide"‐ meaning that the update affects
mobile searches in all countries at the same time (not just in the U.S. first
with other countries following the lead)
It will index websites “page by page”, which means that each page’s of
your mobile website will be judged separately. Good news if your website
still has some non‐optimized pages ‐ it will not render your whole website
mobile ‐ unfriendly. Mobile friendliness will be determined at the page
level – not site‐wide.
And, finally, “real time” means that you can expect to see the changes
immediately the next time Googlebot crawls your pages. Again, great
news since it makes possible to apply additional changes to pages and
not to wait for eternity to see the results.
What to Do
First and foremost, don't panic! Google provides clear guidelines of what it wants to see on your mobile website.
• You can start by checking your website's status with this free online tool. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile‐friendly/
• It is also advisable to use your Webmaster Tools account to get a full list of
mobile usability issues across your site using the Mobile Usability Report.
• Make sure your website meets mobile usability standards from Google. Here's how Google defines them:
o A defined viewing area (or viewport) that adjusts to the device’s screen size.
o Content that flows in the viewport, so that users don’t have to scroll horizontally or pinch the screen in order to see the entire page.
o Fonts that scale for easier reading on small screens. o Easy‐to‐touch elements (e.g., buttons) that are well‐spaced from other
touch elements. o Visual design and motion driven by mobile‐friendly technology.
Here's also a list of things to avoid:
• Blocked JavaScript, CSS and image files
• Unplayable content • Faulty redirects
• Mobile‐only 404s • App download interstitials • Irrelevant cross‐links • Slow mobile pages
Keep your website mobile friendly, and never forget about the power of mobile!
