For a long time, Toyota insisted that typical electric vehicles were the most obvious choice among consumers in terms of practicality, particularly for drivers primarily seeking short-range, urban usage. Although recently, Toyota is beginning to discover that plug-ins might be worth further consideration as more competitors are getting in on the action. As a result, Toyota has unveiled the Toyota Prius Prime and are currently in talks to manufacture a Toyota Camry Prime in the near future.

The man behind the development of the Toyota Prius, Takeshi Uchiyamada, predicts that plug-in hybrid vehicles will catch on even faster than the original Prius. Sales are expected to take off in Japan the fastest before hitting the rest of the world; however, forecasters estimate yearly annual sales of 60,000 Toyota PHVs hitting the streets across the globe very soon. Within 10 years, Uchiyamada predicts at least 1 million PHVs will be sold over the next decade.
