edificio puede parecer macizo y eterno 0 ligero y efimero;

tales caracteristicas. Su dedicaclon exhaustiva durante mas

Architecture represents an ability to view things together
and put them into a relationship that is over and above isolated
and random existence. A conceptual edifice expressing the idea
which generates a meaningful connection underpins all architecture.
Given the necessity of such a conceptual edifice, it comes ratherclear that the principal problems of all architecture are not
related to questions of decoration but to questions of order in
space and structure. Thus the language of the architectural body
is involved in translating the relationship between support and
weight into a picture representing the interplay of stability and
dynamism and expressing a general feeling of belonging to this
world. A building can have the appearance of massive weight
and eternity, but also of lightness and volatility; like a Baroquesculpture, it can sensually sink down or float up to the sky. It can
radiate total tranquility or vibrate with tension, be either cold andindifferent or the committed expression of a desire to be involvedin events.
Every building shares a double identity: it is a self-containedobject in space but at the same time it provides the necessary
frame for social activity. The surface of the architectural object
serves both as a manifestation of boundary and an instrument of
mediation, seperating and connecting simultaneously. It is onlythrough such an active zone of ambivalance that proximity and
distance are about to emerge, qualit ies which cloak the building
with a layer of spatial relations that constitute its atmosphere.Only then the object in space gains presence and perspective,
meaning and profoundness and the social horizon of architecture
can open up.
2
It is such a radical object, that an architects dream circle
around, in order to unite mind and matter and to build up a
radiating strength and power of transformation apt to changewhat is already there and to enrich the wealth of our experience.
Hans Kollhoff has brought such an «architect's architecture»
from the realms of idealism into the world of reality with
buildings that, although few in number, have been intell igently
conceived and constructed to a strikingly high standard. This isthe result of experiments carried out over more than a decade,as he intenstvetv tackled architecture and the problem of
building; these experiments have led to important projects and
commissions that, executed with undeniable quality, have left
their mark in Berlin and beyond.

The first impression that Hans Kollhoff's buildings g' e isone of absoluteness, accompanied by a sense of substance an
consequence, of wholeness. In striking contrast to the presen
tendency towards fragmentation and the piecemeal, these
buildings are self-contained units, compact objects. Their calm
but self-assured posture communicates an idea of straightnessand verticality, which seems an intrinsic part of their existence.
Buildings are conceived of on the basis of principled solidity
and steadiness. From this, it goes without saying that neither the
thin-walled boxes typical of classical Modernism, perched on
stilts and looking for all the world asif they were about to take off.

«We want to keep both feet on the ground, but still stretch
our heads into the clouds» This comment by Mies van der Roheis echoed, albeit years on, in Hans Kallhoff 's buildings and his
idea of architectural presence and substance. To begin with, abuilding has to be put in its right place, as something heavy and
permanent. His preference for bricks, albeit covered with glass,
can be seen as an expression of this desire for heaviness and
substance, for «gravitas» as a function of the material to be
used; this feeling needs to be preserved even if materials are
used that optically deprive the building of weight. His buildings
appear before us with a hardness and directness lacking in
contortions or striking gestures. Purposefully situated and
carefully assembled they occupy their specific place, which they
need to fulfil their basic role and to be able to begin theirdialogue with their environment.
3
The purpose of any architectural project is an «operation»
on a city's surface, as if it was a case of extending the architecturalqualities of a building in space, i.e. in terms of urban development. Thus, the building is accepted into the urban <<fold»and given a
specif ic function. On the other hand, however, it must be given
the power that it needs to establish itself within the context of
what is already there, to trigger off change. or stabilisation in this
environment and thus contribute substantially to the transformation
of the urban scene.
The central theme, one that Kollhoff and his architects'
practice constantly work around with their projects, is to determine
the conditions and characterist ics of just such a form of urban
architecture, based on the premises of the urban effectiveness
of architecture as an underlying principle of city development. These projects constitute a methodological frame work dealing
with the concept of a specifically city-orientated form of architecture
that cultivates, as its fundamental characteristic, the moment of
the dawning of environmental consciousness. This potential is
then used to generate the spark that will trigger off change. With
this concept of a «consciously city-orientated architecture» (aphrase that had already been used by Karl Scheffler in 1913 to
define the fundamental task of modern architecture) Kollhoff
continues a tradition that is particularly specific to Berlin. It was
established by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the early part of the 19th

porando algo nuevo y aun no realizado anteriormente.

century with his city planning based on individu
sensitively revived by Alfred Messel at the e f
century with the development of the modem urban . a/
building, to be given a powerful renewal by Pe e Be res'industrial buildings around 1910 and finally continued rig up
to the present time by his pupil Mies van der Rohe with "Jdingslike the Berlin National Gallery.
What this Berlin tradition can contribute to prese-day
architecture is demonstrated by Kollhoff's buildings and projects.
They represent a kind of examination of history, which does 0
look back in order to find specific solutions which can then be
processed and exploited, but rather uses history to obtain aclearer idea of the fundamental questions which need to be
dealt with in the present. Looking for what can be preserved and
reused does not provide a continuation of history; it is the
addition of something new and unrealised that continues historyand only thus really makes it possible.
Hans Kollhoff's Berlin buildings are expressions of the
point of view that the development of contemporary architecture
cannot ignore Modernism what many recent IBA (International
Building Exhibition) buildings, with their typological and formal
historicism, suggest and but thatit can only grow out ofModernism.
Theydemonstrate that thepotential of ideas inmodem architecture
is far from being exhausted and superfluous but can still be
taken seriously. They also show that this-potential can provide
convincing solutions where a freshness of ideas and artistic
fantasy continue in evidence and form has not fossilized into a"style». It is this vigorous resensitization of the potential of
Modernism that makes Hans Kollhoff's few buildings important
in the architecture forums of today. They are manifestations of
how the horizon of the typological and aesthetic possibilities of
Modernism are reflected in new contexts.
4
His first building, the Berlin Museum development, was
already an example of this tendency. Thestraight row of houses
shows how the type of Zeilenbau turned into boredom by
Modernist housing estates, can be exploited within a block
structure and thus be adapted to the inner-city conditions inherent
in "urban renewal». The fact that such a row of houses can, in the
relief of its wall and its spacing, assimilate a series of typologicaland formal features from previous periods of house-buUding in
Berlin, while at the same time being an unmistakeably modern

building, can be taken as a very clear indication of the path that
architecture should take out of the dilemma of Postmodernist
urban predicament. The repertoire of the 18th and 19th centuries
is far from being an indispensable exclusive element for the
«critical» reconstruction of European cities at the end of the 20th.
An even clearer example of this is the Luisenplatzdevelopment, near Charlottenburg Palace. Here the idea of
reassessment was applied with such artistic power and intensity
that it brought about a striking change in the relationships
between buildings in the area. Once again a row of terraced
houses was built inside a block structure; this time, however, the
aim was not to typologically assimilate the immediate historical
environment but to artistically enrich the latter by means of
purposeful discontinuity. The slightly curved newly-built terrace
runs into the block with a motion as elegant as it is powerful, to
then flow with a dream-like Self-assurance through the undefinedand trivial rhythm of what was there before. Its provocative curve
makes the building stand as the «major shape» in the area and
the tension within it is so intense that this dynamic gesture
dominates al/ the surrounding buildings. Itis only in the expansive
structure of Charlottenburg Palace that the terrace finds a rival.Just as one puts one's hand to one's eyes to look far into the
distance, so the wing-shaped roof rises up from the building to
extend the horizon of the area. Thegesture of interaction directed
outwards into the distance develops powerfully into a dialoguein space; the effect is so harmonious and overwhelming that the
casual observer has the paradoxical impression that it is in fact
the empty block of houses, built before the turn of the century
and saved from demolition, that has just been built as a clumsyafterthought and driven like a wedge into the row of houses that
look so natural where they stand. This sense of a reversal ofroles has a secret accomplice in the small Schinkel Pavilion,
next to Charlottenburg Palace on the opposite side of the road,
which manages to distort the power of the latter's Baroque lines
in a both subtle and subversive way.Kollhoff's urban projects have turned their back on the
general return to traditional architecture that has characterised
Postmodernist urban development for the past two decades.
Attempting to interpret the urban situation in the context of the
present involves not only understanding the city in terms of the
basic three-dimensional arrangement of its mass of buildings
but also taking these fundamental facts into account in a both
ambitious and sensitive way a la Schinkel. This is the perspectivefrom which Hans Kollhoff draws his conclusions from the
achievements of Modernism. His urban architecture refutes any

claim that Modernism is exhausted, that the return to basics is
over and that this would make it-necessary to go back in history.
The modern idea of an «urbanism of solitaries» sets out to
recover a whole over and above the quality of an individual
building and not through the regeneration of a unifying historical
model. A logical part of the reactivation of the potential of
Modernism is transferring a «Unite» as a single element from the
suburbs to the city centre (the Hasenheide project) or making it a
free-standing large sculpture that is, for once and without any
temerity, placed in the middle of the countryside (the Nantes
project). The use of terraced houses in the urban context is a
part of this series of experiments and a programmatic exploration
that involves making the continuous shape of a building sensitive
and responsive to a wide variety of situations, relating it to sites
and streets, blending it with solitary elements, having it react toobstacles, curving it, etc.
.Kollhoff's projects are not idealistic but are always
well-founded. Theyare subsumed by an exact idea, begin with awhole that is independent and realistically conceived but which
only finds its true form in the tension of direct contact with its
environment. Therefore, what the existing buildings welcome is
not the «tabula rasa» beloved of the aoamettst who requires astage, but disruption. The freshness and durability of concepts
show themselves by stretching limits" resisting constraints and
processing resistance. It is only thorough this «deformation», viareality, that a building achieves its «shape» and gives an idea in
the latter of the energy and power that is an intrinsic part of the
process of architectural design as a creative act of appropiationand reassessment.

existentes. Por esto aparecen sendos
edificios-cabecera en ambos extremos;
nacion y ventllaclon, tienen poca profun-
sistemas independientes. De su super-
posicion surge la imagen exterior de la
volumetria.

The building by the Berlin Museum
can be read simultaneously as a criticismof and a reference to the tradition of
architecture and urban development of
both the 19thcentury and Modernism. Fully
rooted in the tradition of Modernism, the
building was developed on serial principles,
but with a unitary form. As such, it is
intended as an expression of belief inhousing ptincioles, as opposed to the
reproduction of the perimeter block. This
aspect of the design also responds to the
particulars of the site that was planned,
developed, and is now managed, by one
developer, yet the row of houses between
Lindenstrasse and Alte Jakobstrasse
develop on a house-by-house basis: the
basic building type was adapted to the
requirements of each house's contextualconditions. There are two end-houses on
Lindenstrasse and Alte Jakobstrasse, acentral gatehouse gives access to the
courtyard of the block and two houses in
front of the party which are not very deep
because of the lack of light and ventilation
so their conservatories and dining areas
are located iii free-standing towers in front
of the houses. There is also a house with
smaller accommodation units for the elderlyand handicapped, designed as a three-
part building with a corridor that gives
access to the neighbouring gatehouse, as
well as three houses whose considerable
depth is motivated by their favourable
situation both in relation to the courtyard
and the private access road.
Themorphological transformation is
reflected right down to the details of the
facade and the ground plan. Theelementsthat characterise the ground plan and
facade develop as py passim systems. It
is the overlaying of these systems that
produces the sense of space and volume.

With its consistent southern
orientation, the building completes as city
block and, together with the houses
opposite, defines a street. The street'scharacter is established by means of
asphalt, paved sidewalks and parking
spaces with a row of trees. Thus a normalstreetspace was developped, even if there

A l ine of streetlights emphasizes the
unity of the housing development and
places the project in the tradition of the

principio.
EI propio edificio puede entenderse
como una especie de forma comprimida
revestida con signos opuestos a los del
bloque de la calle privada: verticalidad
del volumen estucado frente a la hori-
zontalidad del bloque, utllizacion plana
del ladrillo en vez de plastlca, ventanas
horizontales en la zona estucada en vez
de verticales. Aqui concluye el proceso
morfologico de provectacion: el bloque
tan complejo previsto al principio ha side
sustituido por una hilera de edificios en-
tre medianeras basada en un principio
de seriaclon, superponiendo una rela-
cion imaginaria entre puerta y torre.

The tower house in the courtyard of
the Victoria block is what is left of a buildingthatwas to be connected with thegatehouse
and attempted to recreate the original
layout. In view of the number of trees in
the vicinity and taking into account the
resulting density of buildings, the top and
tail of the previously T-shaped building
were gradually separated to produce two
unconnected buildings: the row of ninehouses on the private street and the tower
house, which now appears a s a solitaryelement projected into the inner depths of
the block so a s to maintain the connectionwith the main building. The transparency
of the gatehouse contrasting with the
massiveness of the tower contributes to
this effect. Gateway and tower are
connected in a solid-void relationship to
each other.
Thebuilding itself can be considered
as a compressed yet inverted version of
the main housing slab: the vertical, asopposed to the horizontal, dimension
dominates in the plastered building, the
use of brick produces flat surfaces instead
of volumes; the plastered walls have
horizontal, rather than vertical, windows.
This represents the end of the
morphological design process: the originally
planned sequence of courtyards is replaced
by a linear development on serial principles, superimposed withan imaginary relationship
of gateway and tower.

ferenciados.

The idea of a garden connected to
the Berlin Museum, the last Baroque
palace remaining in the Friedrichstadt,
harks back to a tradition characteristic of
the area, as particularly reflected in the
«ministerial gardens» of the area around
Wilhelmstrasse. Other famous examples
are the Vernezobre Palace gardens and
Schinkel's design for Prince William's
Palace on Pariser Platz. The design is conditioned by the
context of the Berlin Museum area and is
an integral part of the whole development
bordered by Lindenstrasse, Alter
Jakobstrasse and Ritterstrasse. On the one
hand it suggest a reference to the baroque
garden tradition and thus forms a link withthe Berlin Museum and its role as the
museum of the history of Berlin, while, on
the other, it constitutes a contemporary
garden that both invites the passer-by to
relax and satisf ies the Berlin Museum's
need for an open-air extension to exhibit
architectural fragments, small buildings
and sculptures.
Since the beginning of this century,
landscaped gardens have completely
replaced the traditional urban garden.
This does not just represent a typologicalimpoverishment but also that of an important
element of urbanization. The garden as acriticism of a city or asan urban utopia hasalways become particularly important in
an era that is witnessing a restoration and
reform of the urban infrastructure.
Thedesign contains are-interpretation
of elements of the Baroque garden, placed
into a tension with each other. Thisproduces
a variety of thematically differentiated areasintented for a range of different purposes.

vienda".

Two building slabs, intersected andshifted by Eosanderstrasse, restore the
spatial front, facing Luisenplatz, of two
blocks situated between the River Spree
and Otto-Suhr-Allee. This development,
on the one hand, hides the silhouette of an
enormous party wall; on the other, it makes
the two blocks form a homogenous whole
again by picking up and continuing the
line of eaves round the corner.
Thearrangement of the housing unitsthus benefits from the very favourable east-
west situation of the buildings, offering
views of Luisenplatz, the palace and
garden. This is emphasised by the use of
large wintergarden facade, which
characterise the whole project and which,
from the point of view of urban architecture,
mediate between the privacy of the home
and the public nature of Luisenplatz and
the palace. Our particular interest concerned the
confrontation of superblock-housing with
the baroque Charlottenburg Castle. The
scenic potential resulting from this is used
by the three "essentials" of further
architectural development of the volume:
the "wings" of the roof, the "large window",
and the choice of a heavy, blue, industrialbrick as used in some of Behrens' industrial
buildings. Of course, this implies a verydefinite notion of living in the city: the
opening of the apartment to the sun, to the
castle and its garden, the allocation of agenerous external area for the individual
apartment, a kind of "porch" on each floor, which suggest the possibility of "going
round the house".

The very thought of building in this
historical part of the Tiergarten, close
to the historical centre of Berlin, makes it
impossible to set one's sights too high:
the project involves the design of a new
city, even though Berliners have long
become used to the fact that problems of
architecture and urban development are
only seen in terms of restoration.
The concept of the city offered as an
antidote to these historicised tendencies
is that of a delicate balance between space
and mass, that of ananti-hierarchical openurban structure, a series of elements thatare individually arranged and reciprocally
dependent.

The project represents a thorougf:
revision of a plan that had been designeaby the district planning office and haa
already been decided on by the toce.
authority, preserving as much as possibleof the cube shape and plan, and keeping
to the original estimates.
Moving the club away from the
existing school building gives the former
greater independence and more room to
develop a personal character. The rather timid opening to the
outside provided by an existing ramp on
the west side of the building is taken up
and developed into the subject of the
construction: the «building as a flight ofstairs».
The width of the flight fluctuates as it«winds» up the building to the roof. The
steps are given the chance to change their
character as required: at one moment,
they form a functional flight of stairs, at
another, they provide somewhere to sit.
French windows provide access to
the terrace on all floors, which solves the
problem of escape routes in case of fire:
the second flight of stairs that was
requested is used as a playful element. The idea of the «completely
accessible building» is intended to
encourage its users to take it over. The basic appearance of the facade
is derived from that of the school building
but where differences resulting from the
distribution of rooms occur in the ground
plan, the facade is playfully altered,
producing an interplay between symmetry
and asymmetry, between large shapes and
small ones.
In the upper part of the facade, there
are alternating bands of red and blueglazed bricks, each band being three
bricks high. In the lower part, thisalternation
of colour does not continue and the facade
calmly reaches the ground.

Nuestro proyecto propone construir
superficie minima en planta, menor in-

The design is intended a s one for anew building for the Ethnographica.
Museum and not for an extension to thevillas which house it at present.
The problem posed by the courtyara
of the block, together with the requiremen
to preserve as large an area of parkland
as possible, is solved with a building tha
occupies a minimal area of developed
land, hardly bigger than what is at present
occupied by the villas. From this base,
which appears on the layout as a villa
projecting into the inside of the block, the
building develops as a projection to north
and south and forms a point, which
symbolically penetrates into the space
between the villas. (As the composition
brick suggested).
From the River Main, the building can
thus be seen as a public building with amemorable architectural shape. The villas
are unaffected by the development, which
in this way recognises their historical
importance.

yecto arquitect6nico intenta establecer
una separaci6n consecuente entre 1 0 an-
tiguo y 1 0 nuevo. La sala principal se res-
taur6 en base a los dictarnenes clasicos
de la restauracion de monumentos. Aqul
estado original- haga entrar luz.
techo.
En el vestibulo se solapan dos es-
pacios, uno que determina la sensaci6n
espacial al acceder al ayuntamiento y
otro que domina al abandonar el edificio.
AI primero se lIega atravesando elcortavientos. Aparece como un espacio
rehundido recubierto de travertino ama-
rillo y recoge todas aquellas funciones
calle.

The confrontation of the restorea
main hall and the newly designed entrance
hall is not just intended to produce a clash
between two worlds but to bring about asymbiosis. . The architectural plan
envisages a strict separation between old
and new. Themain hall has been restored
historicaly. The only addition are the
fluorescent steles, meant to supplement
the lighting provided by the original
candelabras and thus to eliminate the turn-
of-the-century half-light that used to prevail.
The entrance hall contrasts with the grand
theatre-like solemnity of the main hall and
is planned as a functional area that will
allow light in. This is achieved by a wide
opening in the outside wall (not visible
when the building is seen from the exterior),
as well as by glazing the porch area and
painting the walls and ceil ing white.
Two rooms nest here, one inside the
other, one creating a sense of space asyou enter the town hall and the other
dominating as you leave the building.
You enter the first through the porch.
It is a lowered room with yellow
whitewashed walls, which houses all the
facilities necessary to easily find your way
around the building: a doorman's office
that has developed into a complicated but
user-friendly control centre, a lift accessfor thephysically handicapped, a telephone,a coin-operated photcopier and a monitorthat gives all the necessary information avisitor might need.
Youonly become aware of the second
room as you leave the building: like acontainer, it houses the first, although you
gaze is drawn to the green of the entrance
hall beyond and above all of the park on
the opposite side of the road.

In Amsterdam the starting point was
a largely predetermined master plan
aiming for a concentration of largeSOlitary volumes by the water, as the
development site was a disused doc
area.
The project area, the corner of ablock measuring 170 metres by 60 with acircular inner courtyard, was gradually
transformed in shape: an existing house
had to be taken account of and an
asymmetrical piece was cut out of the
block. The fact that this house neededlight and a view from the side meant that
the side wing was moved further in. It
was the wish of the future occupants that
what was left of the former dock park
should be preserved and for that reason
the bottom four floors of the block were
opened up on the side faCing the park.
Finally came the solution to the
contradiction between the courtyard
development and the quayside location:the front of the block that faced the water
was pushed down to enable the sun to
shine in from the south and to give those
who lived in the courtyard a view of the
water.

The ideal location of the site in tne
heart of the city, within walking distance :
thecommercial, cultural and eamirustretiv«centre dictates an urban cevetoomeniboth as regards appearance and the range
of facilities on offer.
This motivates the proposal fo
compact, right-angled buildings, with clear
divisions in the «public» facade, with part/t
two-floored, «gill-l ike» loggias facing the
street, and a «private» facade looking onto
the courtyard. The open development ana
solitary appearance of the buildingeliminate any idea perimetral block
development and mean that the first part
of the project will already form aharmonious whole with its surroundings.
The type of housing is in keeping
with the demands of the urban dweller, for
whom closeness to urban life is much
more important than a little house in the
country with a garden.

Debido
a laventajosa situaclon en latrama viaria
ya la proximidad de varios espacios ver-
des es un emplazamiento optirno para
ser densificado.
Nuestro proyecto pretende reforzar

The Hasenheide site, opposite the
Vo/kspark, is one of the most importan
areas in Berlin. It is an idea/location for a
high-density development given its
excellent transport facilities and the nearby
park.
The project aims to consolidate this
situation and express the potential of the
area, as well as that of a complex pro-
gramme, with a sense of concentration.
This building consciously continues
the tradition of large-scale constructions, such as the Karl-Marx-Hof or Corbusier's
Unite but, in addition, has an urban attitude,
the like of which can rarely be found in
Modernist housing developments. The
Grand Hotel gives the best idea of how
the project is conceptualised: one building
very compactly houses an extremely wide
range of facilities, ranging from basement
shops, restaurants, the delivery area and
waste disposal facilities via the bowlingalley and car park on the lower floors to
the Kindergarden on the roof.

- crear un grupo de viviendas uni-
tario;
- respetar la vegetaci6n existente
(protecci6n ambiental);
- resaltar la impresi6n de amplitud
paisajistica a pesar de densificar ellugar;
permita el programa;
lugar.

With the specific aim of taking up
this Berlin tradition of a physical and operdevelopment that produces a sense ot
space, this competition proposal is basec
on the following points:
- development of a cohesive hous-
ing-estate
- respect for the existing vegetation
(protection from pollution)
- preserving the sense of open
landscape in spite of the housing density
- variety in types of building relatedto the context
- variety in building use, as envis-
aged in the framework of the pro-
gramme
- limitation of the effect of Late
Functionalist housing and urban devel-
opment on the surrounding area.
What suggests itself is a staggered
row of houses, snaking its way throughthegreen, appears as a sequence of differing
volumes and areasproducing thestaggered
effect. This will have the effect of toning
down the conflicts in the urban context
and emphasising the qualit ies of the area.

Banyoles sees itself as a towr
connected to its lake. The development 0';:
the Draga site for the 1992 Olympics offersan opportunity for forging a stronger linbetWeen town and lake and making it more
precise.
The building constitutes the town's
northern boundary. Its relaxed concave
form together with the avenue bordering
the lake produces an open park-like area
In contrast to this, and thus creating
a sense of tension, the building faces wes
in a dynamic way, towards the lake thajustifies its existence. Thus the building
frees itself from the ground, hovers in the
air and rises up.

extraordinaria posibilidad arquitect6ni-
ca para enfrentarse a la fragmentaci6n
latente y tam bien ala estereotipificaci6n
implicita.
Como primer paso proponemos:
do edificatorio colindante, basandose en
el sistema viario existente.
2. Respetar la trama edificatoria de
manzanas cerradas con bloques de 4
plantas y 24 m de profundidad ocupados
por comercios, despachos, talleres, yaccesos.
The are surrounding the site that is
bordered by the Diagonal in its present
from is particularly attractive because
demonstrates the unity of Cerda's grid
layout, and the sections of each block,
tat are steadily gaining greater
dependence, contain the nucleus of aorm of architecture and urban development
that can no longer be denied.
The aim is to create a developmentthat can be understood architecturally,
that is not derived from a global plan norfrom examples of lifestyles but that directly
springs from the requirements it has tofulfil and then thematises, reflects and
represents them. The sense of conflict
that exists between Cerda's grid on the
one hand and the Diagonal, the existing
network of streets and the present use of
the buildings on the other is thus not seen
as an obstacle but as presenting an excellentarchitectural opportunity to counteract both
the latent disintegration and the implicit
stereotyping of the area.Theminimal requirements suggested
to achieve this are as follows:
1. The restoration of the Diagonal to
its original appearance, with a promenadeup the middle and an avenue lined with
palm trees, which, based on the present
system of streets, cuts through the texture
of the perimeter blocks.
2. Support for Cerda's grid in theform of a 24 meter deep, four-storey high
perimeter blocks, which will contain shops,
other services and entrance halls for the
houses.
3.Accommodation with plentiful light
and ventilation will be provided in towers
situated above this development. These
viII be arranged at right angles to each
other where the original grid is still intact,
leaving block corners free, whileemphasising the corners near the
Diagonal.

lineas horizontales. Con ello se acentua
el caracter comunitario y la centralidad
del patio. ---------
A pesar de la complejidad del edifi-
cio su aspecto exterior es unitario debi-
do a la utilizaci6n de un unico tipo de
ladrillo de color oscuro para todos los
revestimientos.

The Markisches Viertel can teach us
a lesson. It is a shining example of a majorendeavour to build what is nowadays an
inconceivably large number of houses in
the shortest possible time.
No housing estate can be built on
such a scale; what is needed is a city
development. To begin with, what is
important is the posit ion of the buildings
relative to the road and in general a precisedifferentiation between private and public
space.
If the four types of house look very
different from each other from the exterior, they all have on their courtyard side a
continuous facade of wintergardens. This
serves to emphasise the courtyard as acommunal area and the centre of the
development.
The complexity of the building is
unified by the choice of a dark fired brick.

centro. Por 10tanto, se ha de replantear
la funci6n de ambas plazas y desarrollar
su autentico genius loci metro politano.

If the Berlin Wall performed one
useful function, it was to contain the
centrifugal forces of capitalist urban
expansion. Compared to every other major
Western city, Berlin can atpresent consider
itself to be very lucky in having an almost
intact hinterland. A unique state of affairs!
Correspondingly, however, Pots-
damer Platz and Alexanderplatz will have
to yield to the pressure for more office
space in the centre, as a result of their
ideal location in the public transport
network and also to reduce pressure on
the historical centre of the city. Both
squares need to be conceived of anew, as
a continuation of their urban genius loci.

Landis & Gyr are planning a
southward building extension to their
industrial zone for the first time since 1943,
the year of construction of their main
building. At the same time, the centre of
Zug is rapidly expanding eastwards. A s a
consequence, a valuable piece of land
could be lost to both the company of
Landis & Gyr, as aprestigious area outside
their premises, and the city of Zug, as an
open area in the future centre of the city.
It is vitally important that this openspace will act as a kind of foyer for the
visitors to Landis & Gyr from all over the
world: this will be the reception area for
clients or visitors on arrival, a place that
will provide information and help them
find their way around.
At the same time it provides a largepublic area for the residents of the city
of Zug.

so Venezia. Otro elemento caracteristico
tale». Por 1 0 tanto, proponemos construir
unas nuevas terrazas, formadas por dos
grandes hoteles entrentados entre sl or-
togonalmente.
88
The picture I have of Milan is
characterised by towers and gateways
-from the towers of the city's fortifications,
as can be seen on early engravings, to theTorre Velasca, from the Porta Venezia to
Portaluppi's buildings on the Corso
Venezia. Another element is the roof
terraces, such as those on Muzio's housesor Ponti's tower block. The latter is so
exciting because it brings to the "Citta
Rationalista» of Milan an American
lightness, a playful element, based on theskyscrapers around Central Park.
Thedesign for the Porta Volta evokesthe threatening mass of the fortifications,
which was only broken through by the
extension of the Via A . Volta as a result ofthe construction of the Cimitero Municipale
and consequently acquired its current
pincer-like shape. Thus, a new pincer
shape is suggested, consisting of two
grand hotels of differing appearance at
right angles to each other.

Este cataloqo sobre la obra del arquitecto
Hans Kollhoff (LobensteinfThur, Alemania,

Thiscatalogue of the work of the architect Hans
Kollhoff (LobensteinIThur, Germany, 1946),
with his own office in Berlin since 1978, is achronological survey of his output from 1980
up to 1991. During these ten years the architecthas produced a considerable number of
projects, ranging from early schemes for
housing blocks to more recent projects in which
his vision of the city clearly demonstrates how
the fertility and potency of his ideas reveals
itself in the testing out of boundaries.Fritz Neumeyer, in his introductions
"Broadening horizons: the architecture of
urban transformation", describes how these
ideas and concepts, rooted in the city itself,
interpret the new context with delicacy and
ingenuity.
