PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B, September 2, 2018

A er six weeks of reading from the gospel of John chapter six, we return today to the gos-pel of Mark where Jesus condemned the external religiosity of the religious leaders of his me. He said that they worshiped God with their lips but their hearts were far away from

God. These leaders created laws that favor them but that did not help the people in giving honor to God. Our Savior looks at the heart of his followers and what they do rather than what they say, therefore, he knows when we are serving him with lip service. If we recog-nize God as the provider and defender of the weak, then we must strive to recognize our own weakness and take care of those who are weak. St. James in the second reading said: “Religion that is pure and undefi led before God and the father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affl ic on and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” (James 1:27).

St. James says, “to listen to the word of God … is like looking at our own features in a mirror.” This text is part of the verses omi ed in our second reading today (James 1: 23). The feature of the church that we are seeing (or hearing) in the past few weeks has not been a good one. It rather brings shame, anger, and sadness to many priests and bishops who are making eff orts to live their commitments to the life of grace they have received at their ordina on. It brings a dent on the image of the church and makes the lay faithful also angry and le some wondering if this is truly the church founded by Christ. Pope Francis in his le er addressing this scandal noted that when one member is hurt, the whole body of Christ hurts. We need repara ons and prayers for all the vic ms of such criminal acts. The church must establish a be er way of keeping her leaders accountable for their ac ons.

Fes val of Ministries: “All good giving and every perfect gi is from above…” These words from St. James in our second reading today points to the gi edness that we all are in Christ Jesus. God has endowed each of us with gi s that we can share with the community. In some way, each of us is that gi . St. James calls us to be doers of the word and not just hearers only. We can use our diff erent gi s to match the needs of diff erent ministries in the church and thus help to bring faith alive to our fellow brothers and sisters. Next weekend, September 8/9, we will be holding the Fes val of Ministries sponsored by the Stewardship Commi ee. The various ministries will have informa on tables in the Family Life Center for parishioners to learn more about the ministries and join them. As God’s stewards, we are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. You are asked to pray and discern your skills and talents so that you will be ready for the oppor-tunity to volunteer by making a commitment to serve in one or more of our over 60 ministries here at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church and school.

Serving Jesus in the church could be doing something so ordinary as cooking and serving meals to the elderly and the bereaved; visi ng the sick and taking communion to them; kni ng and sewing dresses for children and those in need; serving in our social service ministry; praying the rosary and spending an hour before the Blessed Sacrament; teaching catechism to our children; helping with marriage prepara on, and adult forma on; volunteering for our fall fes val and other parish events. Ministry is also helping to make our liturgy be er through being a member of the choir, the lector, sacristan, acolyte, altar servers and MCs, and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. We build the community when we use our talents in the art and environment ministry, being a member of the various councils of the church and serving in the respect life ministry. There are other ways to get involved that are not listed here but they are ways of you can fulfi ll your bap smal commitment to the Lord. Join us for the Fes val of Ministries next week in the Family Life Center a er each weekend Mass.

CCE / FORMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY NEWSLooking for Catechists: CCE classes begin in two weeks, and we are still looking for several catechists to teach. If you’re a confi rmed Catholic who loves their faith and likes kids, we need your help! While elemen-tary classes are almost fully staffed, we need 7 youth catechists {6th, 7th, and HS} on Sunday afternoon and 4 youth catechists {7th and 8th} on Tuesday evening. The classes cannot begin if we don’t have two adults in each class.

We have three catechists trainings scheduled for Tuesday, September 4th (6:00pm), Wednesday, September 5th (6:00pm), and Sunday, September 9th (3:00pm) in the St. Paul Center. CCE classes be-gin the week of September 16th.

Please contact Mike Smith for more details.

Fall 2018 “Sacrament Preparation”: If your child at-tended the “Summer Study” CCE program this June and they need to be prepared for the Sacraments of Reconciliation (Confession) and Eucharist (Commu-nion), please plan to attend the fi rst Reconciliation session on Monday, September 10th at 6:00pm. We reviewed this information at the Sacrament Orien-tation. If you need to purchase a sacrament book, please contact Mike Smith in the Formation Offi ce.

Youth Leadership Team: If you are a high school student and would like to be a part of the planning and programming of our parish Youth Ministry, please con-tact Nery Lucarini.

Mike Smith, M.A. Ginger Herrington Nery Lucarini Pastoral Associate for Formation Coordinator of Elementary Formation Coordinator of Youth Ministry (281) 446-2933 (281) 446-2933 (281) 446-1241 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

CCE / Formation Registration: We are only TWO weeks away from the start of our CCE classes (providing you have already registered your child)! You should be receiving a message from your child’s catechist to remind you about start date and their room number. If you have not yet registered your child for the 2018-2019 catecheti-cal year, you will need to wait until the “Late” registration period, which will open during the week of September 30th during our three CCE sessions. We will not register anyone in the Parish Offi ce. Space will be limited at that point, and student absences will accrue during this delay.

The “school year” program meets weekly on Sunday afternoons (3:00pm - 4:30pm), Tuesday evenings (6:00pm - 7:30pm), or Wednesday evenings (6:00pm - 7:30pm); Home-Based Catechesis is also available. Registered families should bring a parish offering envelope so we can verify your parish membership status (you get these in the mail).

NOTE: It is our policy that no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay CCE tuition. However, those families must speak with Fr. Felix before the family reg-istration Formation classes to get a waiver from him. You may contact him at [email protected] or 281-446-8211. We expect full payment of CCE tuition at the time of reg-istration. If you do not pay on the day of registration, we cannot guarantee there will be room for your child(ren).

2019 Confi rmation TEAM: School is back in session. CCE is right around the corner, which means that Confi rmation is just a few months away! As we prepare for next spring and the be-ginning of the 2019 Confi rmation process, we want you to be a part of this amazing ministry. If you are a confi rmed high school student, young adult, or adult and would like to help plan / imple-ment the HS Confi rmation program, please plan to attend our fi rst Confi rmation Team meeting next Thursday, September 13th from 7pm - 9pm in St. Mary’s Hall. To receive text message up-dates about Team info, please text @conteam19 to 81010.

Breaking Open the Word for Families for The 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time By Ginger Herrington

Reading 1: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Hear the statutes and decrees given to you that you may live. Moses exhorts the people to obey the Law given to them by God. Can you name the Ten Commandments? Do you comply with them? Moses advised his people, the ancient Israelites, to observe the Law that they may live in the Promised Land. When we submit to God’s Law, we may enter into Heaven, which Jesus opened for us by His loving sacrifi ce on the Cross and His glorious Resurrection. Show your wisdom and intelligence by embracing His Law. Know Him, love Him, and serve Him! Love one another as He loves us.

Reading 2: From the Letter of St. James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 Every good gift is given by God. St. James advises the Church to “humbly welcome the Word that has been planted in you and which saves your souls.” He is saying the same thing that Moses said 1400 years before him: obedience to God’s law saves your souls and allows you to enter Heaven, to be with God forever. Think about it: if you were God, King of the Universe, would you want someone living with you who did not respect you? Who did not love you? Who did not recognize your great love for them? Heaven has been opened for us by our wonderful Savior, Jesus Christ, but it is our choice to enter into eternal bliss with Him or to reject Him and suffer eternal separation from Him. Choose wisely.

Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 Jesus taught the people: “From inside, from the heart, arise evil thoughts.” Jesus’ response to the Pharisees explained that washing your hands in a particular way, washing cups and pots and plates, keeping separate from what might make you “unclean” is not what God had in mind: He wants people to be clean of heart. Those who observe the purity rituals may honor God with their words, but may be far from Him in their hearts. Ex-amine your conscience regularly and keep a rein on your thoughts, that you may remain close to God at all times. Come to confession to keep your heart clean. Honor God with your pure heart ...

Our Pope Speaks “To listen to Jesus, we must be close to Him, to follow Him, like the crowd in the Gospel who chase Him through the streets of Palestine. Follow Jesus in order to listen to Him. But also let us listen to Jesus in His written Word, in the Gospel. I pose a question to you: do you read a passage of the Gospel every day? In any given moment of the day, I take the Gospel from my pocket and I read something, a short passage. Jesus is there and He speaks to us in the Gospel! Let the Gospel be with us always, because it is the Word of Jesus…” -Pope Francis, Angelus Address, March 16, 2014Scan this QR code with your smartphone to access the full and complete text or see it online at www.st-mm.com/bulletins-childrens-news-full-text
