AppendixTechnical Explanations

Viscosity Tables Viscosity is the measurement of internal friction of a fluid. Sir Isaac Newton defined it in 1687 for the “absolute” or dynamic viscosity as the correlation of shear stress and strain rate. The dynamic viscosity of lubricating oils as Newtonian fluids according to DIN 53 015 can be measured with the so-called “Höppler” falling-ball viscometer.

; 1 Pa s = 1 Ns/m

10-3 Ns/m = 10-3 Pa s = 1 mPa s = 1 cP (Centipoises)

The so-called “Ubbelohde” capillary viscometer is used for measuring the kinematic viscosity v according to DIN 51 56. = / 1 m/s = 106 mm/s = 106 cSt (Centistokes)

ISO-VGISO-VG refers to a rounded number value in a series of ascending numbers as defined by DIN 51 519 for the kinematic viscosity of liquid industrial lubricants.

The rounded number, e.g. in ISO-VG 7 is derived from the value 6.8 mm/s, the value of mid-point viscosity at 40 °C. A single mid-point viscosity value is approx. 50% larger/smaller than the value preceding or succeeding it. Permissible tolerance of ISO-VG is +/-10% of mid-point viscosity

The “National Lubricating Grease Institute” has crea-ted a classification for the consistencies of lubricating greases that was adopted as DIN 51 818 norm.

Consistency is defined as the resistance of a grease to deformation (similar to the viscosity of lubricating
