NEEDS
Weifang did a terrific job with teaching the content and language of Chinese. She assumed that her students knew classroom expectations. Many students coming into our classrooms require us to teach them about routine, expectations and procedures.
IS THE TOOL THAT WEIFANG
USED TO HELP
HER STUDENTS UNDERSTAND
WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF
THEM.

Success
HOW DID WE START?
1. Examine style – i.e. - Do my students need more structure when I work with someone else?
2. Build relationships – shared things about herself (power point) and activities.
3. Increase positive interactions.
4. Teach expectations – for each activity in her class, entry, exit, lecture, test taking, seat work, group work.
When your expectations are clear, students never have to guess how you expect them to behave in each activity.
“”
THE SUPPORT THAT COACHING OFFERS...
1. Weifang requested coaching support to evaluate her program throughout the current school year.
2. She developed new ideas for her management plan – emailing students, new teaching procedures, videotapping for reflection and feedback.
3. When she introduced any new activity she realized that expectations were needed! (game activity)
4. She discovered that there is a difference between rules and expectations!
5. She understood the need for consistency, monitoring, modeling and correction.
STUDENT AND CLASSROOM OUTCOMES...Weifang saw an improvement! (quiet entry and exit, raising hand, listening
during instruction, work turned in on time)
The students reported the following during a video/reflection taping of the class period:
Chinese is fun. It was cool watching our class and seeing what we need to improve on. We need to ji shou before talking. Also not talk in ying wen.
For the most part, everyone is respectful and quiet. We can have a hard time getting quiet when you remind us of the expectations but we are improving.
We asked a lot of good questions and get more done in class! We seek education. We are excited to learnWe are enthusiastic about learning new materialA good vibe comes from the class and we want to learn We had great positive energy, we just must learn to focus that energy on the task at hand.Excited to learn and do fun stuff like pai pai shou. We all knew what we were doing and talking about! We are able to complete our work and accomplish so much more in the class period.

Best Practice Award
How Titan Stars BeganAly VanderPlas saw a need to better include
students with disabilities in Athletics.
Many of the students expressed interest in joining the Cheerleading program.
Aly coordinated with Student Activities and the Cheerleading program to begin Titan Stars!
How the Program WorksThe program consists of: two coaches, the JV
coach, a teacher from the special education department, the JV cheer squad and any interested students with special needs.
The JV cheerleaders mentor the Titan Stars during cheerleading practices each week.
The JV cheerleaders explain and demonstrate cheers, stunts, and skills that the Titan Stars will perform at several games.
Benefits for AllFor the Titan Stars: having the experience
of participating in a high school sport, a fun form of exercise and developing relationships with their same-age peers!
For the JV cheer squad: gain leadership experience, learn a tremendous amount about interacting with people with special needs and develop true friendships with the Titan Stars!
Watch the Titan Starsin Action
From the Cheerleaders’ Point of View"Titan Stars made me feel proud of how I can help
out and make a difference in others' lives. I could see it on their faces every practice and game of how excited they were to cheer and stunt with us. Now I have more friends to say "hi" to in the halls at school and it puts a smile on my face when I see them.“
"Titan Stars has given me the opportunity to learn to collaborate and communicate in an entirely different way. Everyone on the team developed patience and leadership skills through this program."
From the Cheerleaders’ Point of View"My favorite moment was the first time a Titan Star
flew because she was so determined to get up and was so patient as we worked at it to make it happen. When she finally flew, she had found her new favorite stunting position and there was no turning back. The entire experience was as inspirational as it was enjoyable!“
"We were able to meet people that we would probably never have talked to normally, but being able to cheer with the Titan Stars allowed me to find out that they are not that different from us."
