Governor’s Message By Linda McGlothin—Indiana Society Governor

Spring 2018 Greetings, Everyone!

As I write this, I can hear the birds singing just outside the window. They know that spring will soon

be here. And in walking outside, there are several blooms popping out their heads. I am reminded of

the pilgrims and their experience after a harsh winter, waking up to birds singing, seeing the signs of

spring, and being grateful that they had made it through that harsh winter.

I am grateful to be serving you and excited about our spring luncheon meeting. Our Governor Gen-

eral George Garmany will be visiting and sharing a few updates from Plymouth before launching in

to his entertaining talk on "Captivity: Terrorism at the Turn of the Century." This is one program not

to be missed. Following the presentation there will be time for questions. Let's show him our support

and "Hoosier Hospitality" by being present for this educational program.

One of our goals involves education of children and the true story of the Pilgrim experience. Also in

attendance at the spring meeting will be Kevin Stonerock who portrays the pilgrim Stephen Hopkins.

The Indiana society supports Kevin with donations to help underwrite his "Pilgrim in the School" program. Kevin is available for

programs, not only to school children, but also to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, after school programs, etc. His character Stephen Hopkins

is ideal for 5th graders. If you know of a group who would enjoy having Kevin, please go to his website, www. kevinstonerock.com

and email him your request.

To bring you up to date on the Parish Meeting House in Plymouth and the donations given from Indiana; this year we gave a little less

than $1000, so we are well on the way towards our goal. Each state is encouraged to give as able, and we have through 2020 to give

to reach the goal of $5000. This church is built on the original site where the Pilgrims first worshipped 400 years ago. The church is

in need of donations to fund the restoration. If you have not yet given this year, please consider a tax free donation for this worthy

cause. You may send a check made out to the society to our Assistant Treasurer Dick Gould, 2436 Hopwood Dr, Carmel, IN 46032.

On a final note, we currently have a need of a Board Secretary to take minutes, and we need your help to fill this vacancy. Duties in-

clude attending the four yearly meetings and taking minutes. For details on how you can become more involved with the work of the

Society, call 317-257-6350 or email me at [email protected] or [email protected].

Hope to see everyone on April 21!

Progress on the DNA project on FTDNA

Laura Smith Here is an update on the IN database & death certificates/information

project. The Indiana Mayflower database is incomplete…only active

members were included when it was created.

I am creating an excel file that has the pertinent information on every

member (past and present) that will be used to add every member to

the database.

I have reviewed every application from 1-1000 added them to the Excel file

I have searched for death certificates, find a grave, death indexes, and social security death information

for members 1-800

I am also in the process of comparing the database entries with the applications from more recent mem-

bers.

I am also including relationships of members to each other.

This is a work in progress project that I hope will be completed by the end of 2018.

I intend to give all the death information found from our members to Plymouth when complete.

Plymouth increased cost of preliminary applications from $25 to $35 per request on their website

starting Jan 1, 2018. In the past volunteers did the preliminary reviews, however due to the increased num-

ber of reviews, there are no longer volunteers willing to do the job and new staff must be hired and trained.

Proposals approved at Congress included moving forward from the ‘Joint Venture Agreement’ to forming a ‘Charitable Trust’ with First Parish

Church to raise the necessary funds to restore and preserve the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse and the proposal of the New Eng-

land Historic Genealogical Society and FamilySearch to digitize and index all Mayflower applications on file.

GSMD thanked our most generous donors with a local, historical tour and the 1620 Club Banquet in September. At the banquet, we awarded the 2017 Pilgrim Academic Research Award to Pilgrim scholar Jeremy Bangs. His colleague Jori Zijlmans of the Netherlands accepted the award on his behalf.

With regret, but warm wishes, Dr. Walter Powell retired as the first Executive Director of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, giving us the opportunity to hire new Executive Director Susan Belekewicz in September 2017.

Successfully removed the balustrade on the Mayflower Society House to ready the roof for important repairs. We hope to restore a new balustrade replica in time for the 2020 celebrations.

Upcoming events:

Pirates Ashore is May 19, 2018 in Plymouth

The MA society is hosting a book discussion at the Mayflower House on Jun 7, 2018 at 10 AM. They will be discussing Between Two

2018 Scholarship Recipient Kevin Stucker

My name is Kevin Stucker. I am the grandson of General Society of Mayflower

Descendants member Pamela Henry Sanders and a descendant of Mayflower pas-

senger William Brewster. A Franklin, IN resident, I will graduate from Whiteland

Community High School May 26, 2018. I was recently recognized as a National

Merit Finalist. I am active in my school, church, and community. I played high

school football for four years and have been a percussionist in our school concert

band throughout high school. I serve as a musician for Community Congregational

Church's praise team. I am currently my school's National Honor Society President

and serve as President of Whiteland's inaugural Town Manager's Student Advisory

Council. This year will be my tenth year as a 4-H member. At this time I am close

to making my final decision as to where I will be attending college. I plan to study

political science for my undergraduate major in preparation for law school.

Thank you for your support, Kevin Stucker

Other Ways to Contribute to our Mayflower Society — Erica Gould Please also consider shopping on smile.amazon.com. Amazon has a charitable foundation that

will donate 0.5% of your eligible Amazon purchases to the charitable organization of your

choice. To get started, go to smile.amazon.com and select a charity. The Indiana Society

of Mayflower Descendants is not one of Amazon’s spotlight charities, but you can “pick your

own” by typing Indiana Mayflower in the search box underneath the spotlight charities. The re-

sult will show the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants— elect this. It’s that simple.

However, when you shop, you will want to remember to go to smile.amazon.com

instead of the regular amazon.com, but it is the same website and all the same

products and all of your old preferences and passwords will still be in place.

“ Feel good while you shop knowing that a small portion of your purchases will

be helping to support The Indiana Society’s Scholarship Fund.” —Melissa Garrard

There is also the Kroger Rewards Program as another means to contribute as you

make purchases. Kroger is committed to helping our communities grow and pros-

per. Year after year, local schools, churches and other nonprofit organizations will

earn millions of dollars through Kroger Community Rewards. Kroger Community Re-

wards makes fund-raising easy—all you have to do is shop at Kroger and swipe your

Plus Card! (Information about getting a Kroger card is available online.)

Since last Fall, the Society has lost three members. Books have been donated to the Indiana State Library in their

memory from our Society.

At the Board of Assistants’ meeting in March 2018, and in looking at the year end Treasurer's report, it was de-

cided that we need to cut expenses because our expenses are more than our income. So, it was decided to cut

back on the mailing of the formal invitation. In the future, starting in the Fall 2018, we will still have the RSVP

in the newsletter; we will email the invitation to everyone who has an email address (i.e. to the same people to

whom we email the newsletter). We will only mail out a hard copy of the invitation to those who live in Indiana

who do not have email. It is difficult to break from tradition and we realize that you may “miss” the fancy invita-

tion in the Fall, but the Board needs to be financially responsible.

Dear Members, Your financial donations to ISMD are a necessary component for the continuation of our State Socie-

ty. Our receipts from annual dues and membership fees comprise about one-half of the revenue needed to fund our

current activities. This year, our annual expenses will exceed our Society’s income by a substantial amount. Please

consider making annual contributions to ISMD and please include ISMD in your long term, intentional donation

plans. All donations to ISMD are fully tax deductible by the donor as a 501(c)3 charitable, educational society. The

great ideals which our Pilgrim ancestors passed on to us are worthy of a continuing legacy. Thank you for your con-

tinuing financial support of The Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants. Please mail donations to:
