Associate Director of Missions

We would like to thank Shadow Mountain Community Church who came from San Diego on Saturday February 23rd, with a

group of 50 volunteers from their Spanish church and helped one of our new church starts evangelize the area. Under the

leadership of Pastor Erick Zaldaña, his wife Yamileth, Gerardo Muñoz and Jim Shankula, this team of 50 came alongside

Iglesia Bautista Siloe with Pastor Jesus Castañeda and went door to door sharing the Gospel. They also invited people back to

the church for a family festival. There was food, music, dramas, jumpers, popcorn, various games, bouncers, face painting

and the message of Christ's saving grace proclaimed to adults and children. As a result of their faithfulness and their desire to

serve, over 25 people came to know the Lord that day and 14 new families came to visit the church. This was a great

blessing for the this young congregation and has motivated them to continue reaching out to the community.

Shadow Mountain Community Church came to our Association to be a blessing to one of our new church starts without asking anything in return.

They are a shining example of what it means to build the Kingdom of God and serve in an area which will not directly benefit their church but

will make an impact on heaven. As James 1:22 reminds us to be "doers of the word and not hearers only..."

This is a clear example of the Cooperative Program in action. CSBC assisted with financing, the local association helped organize the logistics for

this event, and the visiting and local church were the foot soldiers going door to door reaching the world one person at a time. May we continue

to look for opportunities to be a blessing one to another that the world may see the only true love which comes from Jesus Christ.

Greetings! As we enter spring, we continue to pray for all of our churches as we cooperate together in numerous

ministries. I want to thank Bruce Hitchcock, our State Convention, Pastor Steve Davidson and Tahquitz Pines for

all of their efforts at our recent pastor’s retreat. We had 90 pastors that enjoyed Steve’s teaching, along with

much needed fellowship and refreshment. Tahquitz Pines, in Idylwild, is operated by Cal Baptist and is a great

place for leadership retreats and so forth! We are truly a blessed association. Having a camp of this caliber,

operated by one of our most faithful partners, is another significant blessing God has bestowed upon us.

One of the opportunities I want to remind you of involves church plants within our association. We are still averaging about one

church plant a month and these churches along with others occasionally need a ministry team to come and help out with block

parties, VBS, or other types of outreach events. Often times we think of missions as a place far away, yet within 70 miles of most

of our churches are mission opportunities that are wide ranging and have true kingdom impact. I call these “one day mission

trips”. If your church is interested in this please let me know.

On March 11-14, Southern California pastors met at the 3rd annual Southern Baptist Pastors’

Retreat. This year’s meeting was in the beautifully updated Tahquitz Pines Camp in Idyllwild. The

retreat was led by former CSBC president Steven Davidson, Senior Pastor of Clovis Hills Community

Church in Clovis, CA with worship provided by Rick Muchow. Rick was Minister of Worship at

Saddleback church for 25 years.

Pastor Davidson chose the Theme: "Ministry from the Heart. " The whole retreat will be based on

1 Timothy 1:5, Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a

sincere faith.

He challenged the attendees with four messages built around the topic: The Goal [of our ministry] is Love. God's

love flows in our lives and through our ministries from three streams of the heart: He discussed love as the key

along with ministering with a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.

The combination of inspirational worship, challenging messages, great food, and

the beautiful surroundings made for a productive retreat.

Even in the “down economy” God continues to work in the hearts and lives of His people. Take for instance, Hemet Valley Baptist Church in

Hemet. In 2009 when Pastor Dale Garland was called to Hemet Valley Baptist, he asked the congregation to be in fasting and prayer to seek

God’s direction in regards to building a new sanctuary. The congregation was growing and was already holding three Sunday morning

worship services. For the next year the church prayed and fasted and in September 2010 began working on plans to build. This last year, in

the Summer of 2012, the ground work was laid. Not just the figurative groundwork of financial commitments, architectural design and city

permits, but the actual ground was being prepared to build the new 3,000 square foot sanctuary, nursery, kitchen and staff offices.

The church members formed teams to start a program called the “Ministry of Construction” Each week, one team prays for the building

process and all of the workers involved in the project. A box is placed near the break table for the workers to put prayer requests into if they

want prayer. Another team serves lunch to the workers once a week and they get to know the workers and show them God’s love. Still

another team brings the crew Monday morning doughnuts and coffee and keeps a cooler stocked full of waters. One staff member stated,

“We want the workers to know that they’re not just building a church but a building for a family; and if they want to be a part of that family,

they’re welcome.”

A local temp agency agreed to work with the building contractors to hire church members who apply in the event a temporary laborer is

needed. At least 3 church members have gotten temporary jobs working on one part of the project or another.

Even with the economy in the shape that it is in, people are still honoring the financial commitments it has taken to make a project like this

happen. The church also continues to grow with the average attendance going from 250 in worship to 390 in the past few years. The

building should be complete by June 2013 and they will already have to be in two worship services. The general attitude around the church

is, “we will keep doing what we’re supposed to and God will do the rest” and it seems, that’s just what’s happening.
