TEAMWORK

Why is TeamworkImportant at Workplace?

Teamwork involves the

joint efforts of a number

of people to achieve a

common goal. Therefore

every organization should

emphasize on the

importance of teamwork

for the overall growth of

the company. Effective

teamwork motivates an

individual to grow into a

responsible citizen and

accomplish individual as

well as organizational

goals.

1. Fast Learning - You tend tolearn things at a faster rate, if youare working as a team. Theexperiences and knowledge of theolder team members help you tograsp new concepts quickly.

2. Workload Distribution -Working in a team has anadvantage of the workload gettingdistributed among all the teammembers. With work properlydistributed, you can concentrate ona single activity till the time yougain expertise in it and you do notfeel stressed out due to work.

3. Building Bonds - Continuousinteraction with the team members, working with them for the day, having your meals with them, sharing your joys and sorrows helpsin building a strong bond betweeneach other. In this way, you caneven make friends for a lifetime.

4. Healthy Competition - Justthink of a situation where peopleare competing with each other andtrying to excel better than the other. At the same time they are helpingand assisting each other in work-related as well as personaldifficulties and problems. Wouldn'tthat be a great sight? Well this ispossible when you work as a team,as everyone is emotionally bondedto each other.

5. Exploring Creativity - Whileworking in a team you will never bealone, you will always have someor the other person to suggest yougood things. Suggestions and advicecan help you in generating new

ideas and bring out the creativity inyou.

6. Job Satisfaction - Teamwork isone of the most important reasonsfor employee job satisfaction. This isbecause working in a teamimproves employee performance aswell as makes the work enjoyable. This is also conducive to employeemotivation.

7. Increased Speed of Work -With many people handling a singleproject and doing the assigned workproperly, the overall work speed

increases and your team cancomplete the project well withinthe given time frame.

Teamwork can be defined as anactivity or a set of inter-relatedactivities done by more than oneperson to meet a common goal.Teamwork is not followed only inthe corporate world today; rather itis one of the oldest things known toman. Mankind has worked in teamsand groups since the primitive daysof civilization. Hunting andwandering together in groups is anapt example of teamwork during

those days. It is only in recent times, that it has been developed as a'concept' in the management jargon. T - TogetherE - EveryoneA - AchievesM – MoreTogether Everyone Achieves More, itself conveys the importance ofteamwork in the workplace andelsewhere.

ManagementTips

Acts of teamwork are thosethings which the membersof a team do to encouragethe interdependence of theteam. In teams that arealready well-developed andsuccessful, these acts mayappear to happenspontaneously and naturally. In teams which are at earlierstages of development, theymay need to be consciouslyapplied. Here are 3important acts ofteamwork.

1. Sharing in the teamSharing is one of the defining actsof teamwork and something thatis uniquely human. A six-monthold baby that receives things fromits mother will, by the time it isnine months old be handing themback to her as well. Teamsbecome stronger not just whenthey share goals, information and

ideas, but also when they sharethings such as fears, values andneeds, as well. Open acts ofsharing are the mainstay of goodteams. They break down thebarriers of defensiveness and tellothers that the team is moreimportant than any individual ontheir own.

2. Valuing TeamMembersOne of the everyday acts ofteamwork that everyone in theteam can perform is to valueothers. Valuing who others are andwhat they do is one of the bestways to strengthen the team. Itdoesn't require any skill, just awillingness to do it. Make it ahabit to get to know people better.Use their names. Rememberpersonal things about them. Showinterest. Don't judge them. Givethem strokes of recognition. Listen

to them. Accept them for who theyare.Warren Bennis, professor ofbusiness administration at theUniversity of Southern Californiasaid the campus is in what hedescribes as a "dry, crack-infestedpart of LA". But, he says, everymorning is a delight because thegrounds of the university are keptso green and fresh forming acontrast to the surrounding city. "Itmakes a big difference to me, but Iwonder if anyone has remindedthe gardeners of the importance oftheir work."

3. Asking for help fromfellow team matesSeeking help from others is an actof teamwork that shows that theteam is maturing. Instead ofpretending that we know it all, weare honest to admit we don'tknow everything and need help.We often hesitate to ask for helpbecause we think we should knowthe answers, or because we fearbeing rejected. One way toencourage mutual reliance is toget each team member to work fora period of time with each otherteam member in turn. This helpspeople to appreciate the strengthsof others in the team and to learnfrom them. In larger organizations, people from one function canspend time with people from otherfunctions. Sharing, valuing eachother, and asking for help are

important acts of teamwork inteambuilding. As they become thehabitual ways in which membersof the team work, the team willbecome stronger, happier, andmore productive.

In the present day globallycompetitive market, the realsuccess of a firm lies in the

performance of its team. A dull, demotivated team lacking incoordination leads to the downfallof an organization whereas acompany with well organizedemployees charts out the path tosuccess. HR policies of thecompany are hence alwaysdirected for the betterment of theemployee so that theirperformance can be maximized. So, next time, your team lands upwith a project, remember themotto: "Together We Can".

ERP utilizessoftware applications to advancethe performance of organizations'resource planning, managementcontrol and operational control. ERPsoftware is multi module appliancesoftware that integrates activitiesacross functional departments fromproduct planning, parts purchasing, manufacturing, inventory control, sales and distribution, to ordertracking, which enableorganizations to make betterdecisions, reduce costs and increaseperformance. ERP software mayinclude application modules forFinance, Manufacturing, Sales andDistribution, Procurement and HRaspects of a business. EnterpriseResource Planning systems(ERPs) integrate all data andprocesses of an organization into aunified system. A key ingredient ofmost ERP systems is the use of aunified database to store data forthe various system modules.

Why did Ali Bin Ali Groupdecide to implement ERPSystem? And Why now?The existing ERP system( EMIS) hasalready lived for almost 12 yearsand served our business needs to alarge extent. However, to staycompetitive and to use the latesttechnology to enable businesses tostay updated on timely informationcoupled with high level ofautomation the need forimplementing a new ERP was verymuch felt. Also we need a new

ERP to help us manage ourbusinesses more efficiently throughthe use of real time information anddata to drive faster businessdecisions. Hence the decision toimplement new ERP in ABA Group.Having said this the ERPimplementation is overdue for usconsidering the complexity of ABA

businesses and the limitations withthe existing system. ABA Groupfeels that this is the right time tomigrate to a state of the art ERPsystem to face the challenges of thefuture.

Tell us about the process andhow you started with theproject?

ABA Information TechnologyDepartment initiated this project inJune 2012 and it was supported andapproved by the InformationTechnology and InformationSecurity Steering Committee. Thisproject is about engaging one ofthe renowned names inconsultancy; Deloitte to achieve the

following objectives:1. Conduct Business ProcessAssessment.2. Develop Business and Technicalrequirements.3. Assess readiness of ABAResources and IT Infrastructure.4. Recommend an ERP for ABA.5. Assist in the selection of aSystem Integrator.

ABA Group decidedto implement thelatest cutting edge

ERP system tosupport its followingbusiness functions:

FinanceProcurement

Sales &Distribution

HR &Administration

& Manufacturing.The “dot” was

thrilled to interviewMr. Sampath Balaji,Project Manager of

this initiative.

Interview The journey started by end of March2013 and in the last 4 months,Deloitte has already completed theabove mentioned tasks 1-4.Technology vendors ORACLE andSAP were called to demonstratetheir product capabilities and weare in the final stages of selectingthe technology vendor to satisfy theABA Group’s needs . This exercisewill consider the product fit to meetABA requirements and also the totalcost of ownership including themaintenance of the ERP system inthe coming years. Once thetechnology is selected, SystemIntegrators for the chosentechnology will be selected forcommencing the task of ERPimplementation.

How long does it take toimplement it?The Implementation time dependsupon the implementation approach

we adopt for the rollout of ERPacross ABA Group. There are severalapproaches; big bang; modular; orby function, and based on theselected approach the entireimplementation may take from 24to 36 months.

What are the benefits? Whowill directly benefit?1. To Integrate all functions acrossthe organization offering an overallview of business performance alongwith supporting the growth of ABAbusinesses within Qatar and theregion.2. To automate manual processes, workflows and approvals therebyincreasing the speed of executionand delivery of service.3. To enhance customer servicethrough the adoption of latesttechnology.4. To facilitate faster decisionmaking for corrective action and

quicker responses, by offeringdashboards to managers at variouslevels to focus on their keyperformance metrics.5. To provide accurate andconsistent data flow across theorganization. All reports are basedon single source of information.6. To enable ABA Group in adoptingbest practices which enhancesQuality, productivity and efficiencyof people and processes.7. To expose people of ABA Groupto the latest and best applicationsrelevant to the industry8. To access the application over

web from anywhere and enable e-business.9. To support execution of longterm business strategy of ABAGroup. By keeping a company'sinternal business process runningsmoothly, ERP can lead to betteroutput that benefit the companysuch as customer service, andmanufacturing.10. ERP also creates a more agilecompany that better adapts tochange. ERP makes a companymore flexible and less rigidlystructured so organizationcomponents operate morecohesively, enhancing the

business—internally andexternally.

Where do we stand now?We are in the final stages ofselecting the technologyvendors either SAP or ORACLEand this will be followed bythe engagement of System

Integrators to implement theERP solutions. The process andresources gap across the ABA Groupbusinesses has already beenidentified and we are working onvarious options to carry out thedetailed process re engineeringacross the Group . This initiativewill facilitate easier ERPimplementation. If everything goesas planned, we should see the ERPimplementation roll out happeningby early parts of 2014.

Final note?ABA Group has put in substantialamount of time, effort and moneyin this project .While we are in the

right direction on the subject, weexpect continued support from theABA staff to accomplish our projectobjectives in the coming 24 to 36months. This is a land markinvestment for the future. Allbusinesses are expected to gainsignificant competitive advantageand it is crucial that we capitalize onthis one time opportunity and turnthis investment into a viablealternative. We are at the beginningof a long journey that will requirethe active participation of a greatmany people over the wholeproject period, and beyond, tomake it work!

SAVEENERGY

Before you start a vacation, invest a few minutes in turning things off.By giving your appliances and electronics a vacation, you’ll be savingenergy and avoiding safety hazards. And the money you save canhelp pay for your trip. Go through this checklist of energy-users todiscover home power-saving ideas for when you’re on traveling for

pleasure, away on business, or just gone for the weekend.

Greend t Turn off appliances

and lighting - This is a no-

brainer. Lights use electricity, andwith nobody home there is noneed to keep the lights on. Turn offany appliances you are not usingwhen you leave the room. Don'tleave fridge or freezer doors openfor longer than necessary, anddon't forget that your freezerneeds to be defrosted regularly forit to runefficiently.Turn offyourcomputer.Leavingthescreensaver onwill notsave any energy. Screensavers can use more energythan when you are using thecomputer yourself and canreduce the life of yourmonitor. Instead, enable thedisplay blanking feature toautomatically turn off the monitorwhen your computer is idle.

Adjust the Blinds &Curtains - The sun generates

heat that will radiate throughyour home's windows.

Close your blindsbefore you

leave

town to block out the sun's rays.Keeping your home naturally coolby covering windows will take thepressure off your air conditionerand use up less energy.

Turn up theThermostat - If nobodywill be in your home while you'reaway, there is no need to keep itcool. Give your air conditioner abreak, and turn the thermostat upseveral degrees. It may beunbearably hot when you gethome, so if you don't want to waitwhile the house cools off again, considerpurchasing a

programmablethermostat. Youcan set it to kickon a few hours before you returnhome, and the house will becomfortable when you walk in thedoor.

use a powerstrip/set timers - If the

idea of running around the hometo unplug everything is

a bit too much,use

power strips to plug in multipleappliances, and then turn it all offwith the flip of the power stripswitch. you might want to put yourlights on a timer so they onlycome on at night. This way, you’llreduce your energy costs, and adda security feature to your home.

Swimming PoolIf your pool pump is not operatedwith a timer, it will run 24-hours aday while you’re gone. If younormally turn the pump off for aperiod of timeeach day,

the 24-houroperation canresult in a largeincrease in yourusage. If yourpool uses a

heater as well, think aboutpurchasing a pool cover that willhelp trap the heat in your pool, sothat you can avoid the cost toreheat it. Another piece ofadvice for pool ownersis to adjust thetiming for theautomatic poolfilter and

sweeper, which don’t need to runas frequently while you’re out oftown.

All of these tips should becustomized to both thelength of your vacationand your individual

home’s needs.Vacations cancost a significantamount ofmoney for a

family. It will be nice toknow that, by practicingthese tips and tricks, theelectric bill will be far lessthan normal. Whenrecovering from the costof a vacation, every little

bit helps.

unplug Electronicsand Appliances Believe it or not, many householdelectronics continue to use powereven in the 'off' position. Coffee-makers with clocks, TVs withremote control receivers andcomputers with cooling fans andothers known as 'energyvampires' will run on standbypower unless they are unpluggedfrom the source.

A sign of successfulorganization is its growth interms of its corporate imagethat is built on various factorsviz financial stability, customer trust which not onlygives recognition as anorganization but a BRAND,for eg, we can quote SONY,XEROX, INFOSYS to name afew. But have we everwondered why these are theglobal brands today? It isneedless to say that theseworld class companies alsostarted as a new companylike any other? Then howcome only these are termedas World Class or the mostpreferred organizations inevery aspect.

One reason for success in suchcompanies is “its Employees”. Thecompanies that believe thatemployees are their assets are theones who have achieved success inthe business environment at theglobal level.

In today’s scenario, especially in acountry like Qatar, Human Resourcesis the most challenging factor. Beingin sales and marketing field, I havewitnessed in my interactions withclients, many of senior managers, oreven for that matter, GeneralManagers are not qualified orexperienced for the position theyhold in their companies. As a result, they will not be able to understandthe requirement of their companyand its nature of business. So suchpeople who have decision makingpower will find it hard to make wisedecisions be it hiring qualifiedprofessionals for their company orclosing a business deal profitably.

Another situation is qualified peopleworking under the non-qualifiedmanagers that result in highestemployee turnover. Why do good employees Leave?I recently came across a snippet fromAuthors Marcus Buckingham and CurtCoffman’s Book “What the WorldGreatest Managers Do Differently”:There might be many reasons to betermed as subjective in eachorganization for high employeeTurnover, but generally “peopledon’t leave companies, they leaveManagers”. This was a studyconducted by this Authors Duo.

It is a fact that employees don’t getalong with their managers don’t likethem or don’t respect them, they willleave a company despite high salaryor high benefits. A bad manager is abig factor in employee performance.A good manager, no matter thesalary, will inspire loyalty.

Managers who don’t create the rightopportunities for their employees, don’t communicate with them anddon’t appreciate them often findthemselves dealing with a highturnover rate.

What is the definition of a GoodManager and a Bad Manager? Thebasic difference is qualification andrelevant experience. For example asales person with highest salesrecord need not be a good Manager, because leadership qualities aredifferent from sales performance. Tolead a team, one needs wisdom, understanding and rapport, cooperation amongst the team. Thatcan be ensured only by a person witha vision to lead a team. The personwho has been delegated to choose a

Manager, should be qualified andexperienced to understand therequirement of the position toappoint the right Manager. Nothaving a qualified Manager has alsoresulted in not getting the rightemployees. Such managers duringhiring the process, will get insecureseeing a qualifiedResume/Candidate. In suchsituations, besides employeeturnover, organizations are alsodeprived of qualified employees whocould contribute towards the successof the Group. In Gulf especially inQatar, there are many qualifiedcandidates, who have been rejectedby Managers of reputed organization, because they are qualified for theposition.

Research and studies have provedthat employee need has more to dowith how he or she is being treated, and how they feel, and it is directlyrelated to their immediate supervisoror Manager.

I would say that when there is aturnover issue, it is not necessarily thelow wage, or he or she has got abetter job offer, and a situationalfamily issue, but could also be theImmediate Manager.

In the words of famous Mary Kay Ash,founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics,“People’s are company’s greatestasset”

It does not make any difference withkind of product or business, thecompany can be termed as good, only as the people it keeps, becauseat the end of the day “ it is all aboutpeople”.

Mahalakshmi RMedia & Publishing Division

“Employees are a company's greatest asset -they're your competitive advantage. Youwant to attract and retain the best; providethem with encouragement, stimulus, andmake them feel that they are an integral

part of the company's mission”this was quoted by Former Chairperson of Xerox

Corporation Anne M Mulcahy.

The company name wastaken from its founder Adolf(ADI) Dassler whose first

Named from the

Pepsin.

Name stems from the collo-quial name of books given tonewly enrolled students at thestart of the academic year byuniversity administrations inthe US with the intention ofhelping students to get toknow each other better.

According to Steve Jobs,

Apple was so named

because Jobs was com-

ing back from an apple

farm, and he was on a fruitarian

diet. He thought the name was "fun,

spirited and not intimidating”. And

since The Beatles already had the

brand name Apple on their records,

and the business name as well,

Steve Jobs paid them 26.5 million

dollars in order to settle this issue

.

The original conceptfor the name wasSky-Peer-to-Peer,

which morphed intoSkyper, then Skype.

Combination of the

Danish "leg godt",

which means to "play

well". Lego also

means "I put together" in Latin,

but Lego Group claims this is

only a coincidence and the ety-

mology of the word is entirely

Danish. Years before the little

Both the Kodak cam-era and the namewere the invention offounder George East-

Eastman; he felt it a strong and incisive let-

ter. He tried out various combinations of

words starting and ending with "K". He

saw three advantages in the name. It had

the merits of a trademark word, would not

be mis-pronounced and the name did not

resemble anything in the art. There is a

misconception that the name was chosen

because of its similarity to the sound pro-

duced by the shutter of the camera.

The biggest companies around theworld have undoubtedly becomehousehold names in modern soci-ety. From the likes of Coke andPepsi, these companies had tostart somewhere, and mostly fromhumble beginnings. One of thefirst and most important marketingprocesses in founding a company iscoming up with a name for it.

Sure it sounds simple, but if you have neverbeen in a brainstorming session trying toname a product or a business, you really haveno idea how difficult it can be. It’s an unsungfactor that we as consumers never really givemuch thought to, but such a vital componentto the branding process. The decision to name your company has amassive effect on its destiny. A name is every-thing, it is what represents a brand and it iswhat a consumer can connect with and use ona day-to-day basis. There have been compa-nies out there that had great products, but ter-rible names, which, consequently, never gavethem the chance to thrive as they should have.

Then, on the contrary, you have companiesthat nailed down a killer product and man-aged to find the best name to go hand inhand with it in order to create something thatour society has embedded into their minds. It’s quite interesting to go back to trace backto the humble beginnings of some of thesepowerhouses and look at the actual thoughtprocesses behind choosing their names. Some companies have pretty simple storiesand others took it to entirely new levels ofcomplexity. Here is how the biggest compa-nies in the world got their names and the sto-ries behind them.

Clinging to a computer screen 8 to 10hours a day, 5 to 6 days a weeknaturally drains one’s energy levels andaffects one’s health over time.

Recent Figures released by the World HealthOrganization (WHO) have revealed that morethan one billion adults are overweightworldwide, 300 million of which are classifiedas “clinically obese”. The Middle East region has not escaped theobesity epidemic which has raised concerns ofofficials and residents across the region (Qatarhas the sixth-highest rate of obesity in theworld with 31.3% obese men and 38.1%women, 25.6% of men and 39.9% of womenwere found to be obesein the UAE , while26.4% of men and44% of womenwere found to beobese in KSA). How can a working professional develop ahealthier lifestyle at the workplace and thuslower the risk of raised BMI and diet-relatedchronic diseases? (Such as diabetes, hypertension, etc…)

Top Tips to promote a healthier well-beingand a better lifestyle at work:

1. Do not miss breakfast: Make time forbreakfast every morning before or after cominginto the office: A hearty breakfast is key to

maintaining your food balance throughout theday (aim for a healthy daily 3 to 5 meal plan)

2. Get your homemade food for Lunch to theoffice: a homemade lunch is by all means

much healthier thanvending machine treatsand many food court fastfoods. Also, keep healthysnacks within reach at yourdesk so that you can easilyand readily shun allunhealthy food cravings.

3. Get out of the officeduring your lunch break:Regardless of whether it’s

a 30 minute or an hour-long lunch break, makeit a point to get out of the office and take astroll around your building or theneighborhood. If it’s too hot or too cold to walkoutside then up that heart rate by enjoying abrisk walk at the closest mall/ shoppingcenter/ park, etc…

4. Keep your Body Hydrated at work: Alwayshave your bottles of water stored at work. Donot settle for less than 8 glasses a day. Peopleoften tend to forget about drinking water in themidst of a busy working day. Keep your waterwithin reach at all times while working in orderfor you to avoid dehydration, lack of energyand eventually inefficiency at work. Worn-outbodies and souls are naturally not as productiveas healthy energetic ones!

5. Raise the Health issue to Management:Being a full time employee translates intospending most of your time at work. Do youand your colleagues trust management should

better equip you with healthy lifestyle boostingmeasures? Would an office cafeteria (thatcaters healthy foods), a company gym, ororganizational outdoor activities keep you morefit? Suggest the options you find viable to theupper echelons in the organization.
