Sentinel writerA directory aimed at assist-
ing the community’s seniorshas recently been put out byHospice of Wrangell.
Finished last month, the2018 Wrangell Senior ResourceDirectory identifies varioussupport services that could beof use to members of that de-mographic, running a fullgamut of state, tribal, federal, municipal and private pro-gramming.
The 32-page guide is ex-haustive, covering subjectsfrom emergency and safety toadult education, financial serv-ices, housing assistance, med-ical cost resources, nutritionalaid, ecumenical counselingand legal help. Each entrycomes with an explanation of
the services being offered andwho might qualify, has contactinformation best suited to res-idents of Wrangell and offerssome helpful advice on how toseek out particular means ofassistance.
Alice Rooney put the latestedition together, an updatefrom 2016. The latest guide isthe fourth edition since it wasfirst compiled in 1997.
“At that point I was activelya social worker,” Rooney ex-plained. During her work shenoticed many residents werenot fully aware of the variousservices available to them.Rooney began arranging acompilation of resources, andsoon found a number she hadnot been aware of herself.
While Hospice of Wrangellcurates the guide, WrangellMedical Center has con-tributed funds for printing outphysical copies. A referencecopy is available for use at thehospital lobby, and take-homemanuals are by the hospicedisplay near the laboratory entrance. Copies are also available at Wrangell SeniorCenter, and Rooney has dis-tributed the booklet at the hos-pital’s annual health fair. Anonline copy of the manual isavailable at the Wrangell mu-
nicipal website,www.wrangell.com/commu-nity/senior-resource-directory.
“Hospice also puts out asecond booklet,” Rooneyadded, dealing with finalarrangements and end-of-lifeinformation. Similar to thelarger resource directory, thisbooklet more specifically laysout options available to thosenearing life’s end or theirloved ones.
When the unthinkable does
occur unexpectedly, Rooneyexplained, it can be a tryingtime for family members tofigure out burial services andestate disposal. The bookletprovides options for these, butalso offers resources for copingwith personal loss and othermental health considerations.
This second booklet is alsoavailable at the hospital’s hos-pice display.
Hospice of Wrangell is avolunteer nonprofit dedicated
to assisting the community’selders and their families, par-ticularly at their end of life. Itsservices include its LoanCloset program, which loansout home medical equipmentat no cost, as well as putting oninformational presentationsand distributing guides suchas those mentioned. Sentinel writerThere’s a new face behind the big desk at
Wrangell Senior Center.Leeann Martin took over management at the
local center on March 19, having previouslyworked IT for the school system. Originally fromthe Seattle area, Martin has lived and worked inWrangell for five years.
“It was mostly because I can use more of myskills in one place,” she said ofthe recent transition.
A certified nutritionist witha background in healthcare,Martin’s duties at the center in-clude handling its paperworkand fundraising, and helping toput together its monthly lunchmenu.
Hot lunches are the primaryfocus of the Wrangell Center, and is one of 11 across South-east Alaska operated byCatholic Community Service, based in Juneau. Sixteen com-munities in all are served underthe wider Southeast SeniorServices umbrella, with mealson wheels, transportation andother support services amongthose offered to resident elders.
Open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. during theweek, the Center primarily caters to residentsaged 60 years and older. Last year, staff at the cen-ter provided 3,391 meals at the center, while an-other 4,009 were delivered to seniors at home. The center’s shuttle bus provided 2,077 rides.
Initially state-funded, the program has sinceshifted toward other sources of support. The cityprovides the facilities and fuel for Wrangell Sen-ior Center, while grant monies are made availablefor many of its services through Wrangell Coop-erative Association’s Title VI access. Donationsand other community support round off the rest.
This year the program has a shortfall of$27,000, leaving the center’s staff looking for ad-ditional help. Martin explained the center is look-
ing into a pizza-related driveand a fun run later this year, butis currently selling tickets for araffle to help gee up funds.
“We’re doing a 50/50 on the30th, we’ll do the drawingthen,” she explained. As thename implies, in a 50/50 rafflethe winning ticket splits thetotal pot with the seller, in thiscase the Senior Center. Ticketsare currently available at thecenter.
“That list’ll grow as I getgoing,” Martin added, referringto other fundraiser options.
The Center is not only inneed of operating funds. “Wecan always use games, puz-zles,” Martin said. “We’re al-
ways looking for people to give presentations,”or just to hang out over lunch or coffee. “Peopleare welcome any time.”
For more information on the Center’s opera-tions, or to find out how to help, email Martin [email protected] or call during openhours at 874-2066.
