Rich Thoughts from the Executive DirectorWarm spring greetings my friends!

April is Volunteer Appreciation month but in reality every month is Volunteer
Appreciation month. The Council on Aging would not and could not exist
without volunteers. Our volunteers are invaluable and honestly, we do not thank
them enough for all that they do. From delivering meals to homebound seniors,
to assisting in our office, volunteers do so many things here that help staff day
in and day out serve our community’s needs.

We love our volunteers and want each and everyone of them to know that you are making a huge
difference in the lives of older adults across our county. Your commitment to volunteering is a
selfless and caring act that reflects the true light of being a servant to those in need. I receive so
many calls and notes from people who tell me they do not know what they would do without “their”
volunteer who stops by each day with their meal and a smile or word of encouragement.

If you are a volunteer, I wish I had the words to write to you and share my deepest gratitude and
thankfulness for all that you do to help our seniors. If you are not a volunteer, will you consider
contacting us today and offering your time so that an existing volunteer might be able to take a
break? Volunteering is so good for the soul and can be rewarding beyond your expectations. On
behalf of our clients, staff and myself, THANK YOU for volunteering!!

Blessings,

Healthy Aging and Injury Prevention Program News
The Healthy Aging and Injury Prevention program at the Council on Aging helps Pitt
County residents age 55 and over to become safer in the home by preventing inju-
ries, providing education about falls prevention and home safety, and giving recom-
mendations and/or assistance for modifying the home and obtaining needed safety
equipment. Here is a case example of someone who received these services.

Mrs. Q. had several falls, some occurring when walking down her
stairs to go outside, which lacked hand railings. These falls worried
Mrs. Q. who was now scared to go out of her home. She missed
tending her flowers and her taking care of her yard. Through the
Council on Aging’s Healthy Aging and Injury Prevention program
she received a handrailing at these stairs, which gave confidence,
improved her independence, and significantly increased her quality
of life. She was excited to go outside and take care of her flowers
and yard once again!
