Pam Reardon, head of our Future Señoritas, is very busy as she and her committee prepare to have a Señorita Tea to welcome the new group of young women in the late spring. The Music Guild had a productive year. We added a few new fundraisers, which included the Gertrude Zachary event and the Pretty Purse Palooza. All of the luncheons were extremely well- attended, and all of our members worked together with enthusiasm. I want to thank all the board and Guild members for putting forward their best efforts. Our success would not have been possible without everyone’s hard work. I have enjoyed getting to know so many of our members, and I am grateful for this wonderful experience. Please continue to work hard for our organization …because Music Matters. Best to all, Denise Lemanski

Spring is the time of the year that the Music Guild of New Mexico makes ready for our Grand Finale!

The culmination of the year is the Senorita Ball, this year at Sandia Resort on April 2nd. It promises to be an amazing event. After the ball the Grant Selection will be announced at our May

luncheon at Albuquerque Country Club. In February the Music Guild of New Mexico sponsored the 24th JMYAC. It was a fabulous success. Paula Bradley and her tireless committee achieved this monumental task. Congratulations to all on a job well done. The three piano judges, Hyperion Knight, Dr. Nancy Weems, and Awadagin Pratt, gave some wonderful tips and insights to the Symposium attendees as did Carla Lehmeier-Tatum from the NM Philharmonic. All of the luncheons were extremely well-attended, and all of our members worked together

with enthusiasm. I want to thank all the board and Guild members for putting forward their best efforts. Our success would not have been possible without everyone’s hard work. I have enjoyed getting to know so many of our members, and I am grateful for this wonderful experience. Please continue to work hard for our organization …because Music Matters. Best to all,

MGNM’s March Luncheon a Musical and Culinary Success

2

1

The March Membership Luncheon was a huge success! Tanoan Country

Club is such a pleasant setting, and they did a lovely job for us. There were 67 in attendance, including three new members: Polly Scouteris, Laura Barron and Geralyn Sanchez. In addition, several members brought guests which hopefully will result in additional new members for the Guild. The highlights of the day were performances by the winners of the Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition: Maggie King playing violin and Presley Gao playing piano. They are truly amazing and talented young people.

During the General Meeting, the minutes were approved by acclamation and the nominated 2016-2017 Slate of Officers received a positive vote. Each of the new officers received a carnation. After the luncheon, the raffle was held and

2

garnered over $249. Plans are being finalized for the final 2015-2016 membership meeting and luncheon to be held May 18 at Albuquerque Country Club. Everyone is looking forward to this luncheon as

the 2016 Grant recipients will be introduced and presented with their checks. Be looking for your invitation in the next few weeks. Hope to see you there!

Señoritas Having Fun Shopping and Practicing the Waltz With Their Fathers

At the Fishback Studio of the Dance, to get ready for the Ball, the Señoritas practiced curtseying (not as easy as it looks) and dancing the Waltz with their fathers. According to Pam Reardon, “the most precious and HILLARIOUS ice breaker, by far, is the waltz lesson. Many doubled over with laughter!”

“The Señoritas had a blast at Anthropologie’s ‘dressing for all occasions’ college fashion event,” said Pam Reardon, Co-VP Señoritas.

Presley Gao, Piano, and Maggie King, Violin, Win the 2016 Music Guild JM Young Artists’

Competition

1

The Music Guild of New Mexico presented the Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Concerto Competition for Piano and Strings on a beautiful, spring Saturday, February 13, 2016, in Keller Hall (piano) and in Room B-117 (strings) in the Center for Fine Arts on the UNM campus. Musically gifted young people from throughout New Mexico played in separate piano and strings competitions. Sixteen contestants competed: seven in piano and nine in strings, including bass, viola, cello, and violin. The competition was fierce! First-place winner in piano, Presley Gao, and second-place winner in strings, Sam Barrett, will perform with the New Mexico Philharmonic at a Neighborhood Concert on Sunday, April 24th at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, followed by a reception to honor the young artists. Presley and first-place winner in strings, Maggie King, will perform with the NM Phil on Saturday, May 28th, at a Zoo concert beginning at 8 p.m. Winner of the Piano Competition, Presley Gao, will perform Schumann’s Concerto in A Minor, op. 54, I. Allegro affettuoso with the orchestra at the April concert. He is 13 years old and in the 9th grade at Los Alamos High School. He began to study the piano at age 6. Presley won first place in the New Mexico Music Teachers National Association Junior Piano Competition in 2013 and 2014, and then competed in the Southwest Nationals. He earned first place in District Honors in 2010, 2011, and

2

2012 plus first place in State Honors Level One (2010) and Level Two (2012). He also won first place in the highest level of the Santa Fe Sonata Contest in 2013. Presley received the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico’s Danfelser

Scholarship in 2012, the same year he played two solo piano recitals in Abiquiu and Los Alamos. He currently studies with Dr. Jacquelin Helin, a Steinway Artist. Presley also enjoys science and math. Presley is the son of Jun Gao and Hongzhao Tian. Winner of the Strings Competition, violinist Maggie King, will perform the Saint-Saëns

Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, op. 61 with the NM Phil at the Zoo concert. Due to a previous commitment she is not available for the Neighborhood concert. Maggie, a Santa Fe native and senior at the New Mexico School for the Arts, was our 2015 second-place winner in the strings division. She began playing the violin

when she was 3 ½ and has participated in every musical group and opportunity available to her. Her first solo performance was at age 7,

and she has been part of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony organization for the last 9 years,

including all of the preparatory orchestras. Since 2003 she has studied with Rick Lohmann and Richard Rood. She currently studies with Kerri Lay. For the past 2 years she was awarded membership in the Preludio Summer Program at Ithaca College (NY). Before that, she attended the Summer Institute at the University of Denver, Lamont School of Music. Maggie is a member of the New Mexico All-State Symphonic Orchestra and was selected to participate in the National Music Educators Orchestra in Nashville. Maggie received the Allie M. Norris Youth Leadership Scholarship in 2014 from the State Music Association for her mentoring of young musicians. She is the daughter of John and Sole King. Maggie likes reading, drawing, painting, swimming, and skiing. Our second-place winner in piano was Andreas Landstedt, whose brother Gabriel won the Competition in 2012, and our third-place winner, Victoria Lien, is Ken Lien’s sister. Ken was our winner in 2014. Sam Barrett, cello, placed second and Toby Vigneau third in the strings competition. Hanna Zercher received an honorable mention in strings performance. Cash prizes totaling $6700 were awarded. Presley and Maggie each received $2,000.00. Second- and third-prize winners received $750 and $500, respectively, plus possible performance opportunities; $200 went to the honorable mention winner. To date, over $57,000.00 in prize money has been awarded. Six highly respected, unbiased, out-of-state professionals judged the contestants and provided written, constructive feedback on the performances. Judging the piano contestants were Dr. Hyperion Knight, performer and recording artist; Dr. Awadagin Pratt, professor, department chair of the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, conductor and performer; and Dr. Nancy Weems, professor and

4

chair of the piano area at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. The strings judges included Dr. Sandor Ostlund, professor of double bass at Baylor University; Dr. Jun Seo, concert

cellist and teacher; and Dr. Felix Olschofka, soloist, concertmaster, and chamber musician. We do believe that “it takes a village to put on the Competition.” Where would we be without our many volunteers who supported the numerous activities

involved in the competition? They registered contestants, monitored and timed warm-ups and rehearsals, ushered, took photographs and helped with hospitality. They transported judges to and from the airport, hotel, and UNM campus. They provided breakfast for volunteers, contestants, and families, helped with the awards ceremony, celebrated the day with a closing reception, and assisted with the Symposium. Pre-JM Young Artists’ Competition Piano Fest Held at Ranchers Club

A Piano Fest featuring Competition judge and panelist Hyperion Knight, Rancher’s Club own Lindy Gold, and Jackie McGehee, convened at the Rancher’s Club on Friday, February 12th to celebrate the Competition and raise a little money. Everyone enjoyed hearing the old standards that were played, including a lot of Gershwin. Many thanks to Lindy Gold and the Ranchers Club management for arranging the get-together.

1

The Inaugural Symposium: “Professional Development of Young Musicians,” sponsored by the Garcia Automotive Group through the Albuquerque Community Foundation and a donation from Bill and Julia Huff, convened after the reception following the Competition. Jackie McGehee moderated a panel of professional musicians with years of experience including Hyperion Knight, Carla Lehmeier-Tatum, and Awadagin Pratt, who discussed the following topics related to career paths for young artists:

• Preparing for a career in music • Choosing repertoire for competitions and

auditions • Preparing for concerts and recitals • Affiliating with professional organizations • Applying to music schools and selecting a

school, mentor, or teacher • Writing resumes and completing applications • Social networking • Applying for scholarships

2

The panelists also answered questions from the audience. About 40 people attended: students, parents, Guild members and volunteers.

Spring is here once again and on the Education front we have several events set up over the next few months. Once again, we will be helping direct students into Popejoy Hall to hear the NM Philharmonic perform. The Albuquerque Public Libraries added our Peter and the Wolf presentations to their Summer Reading Programs at some locations. Also, we will have a booth at the Albuquerque Folk Festival again this year. The Music Guild has a rich history educating our community about music! We all understand the benefits of music in our lives at any age. Join us for a few hours to promote music education, enjoy some fresh air, and get to know other Guild members for these events,

...because Music Matters. Join our presentation volunteer list; we would love to have you on our team. We have Peter and the Wolf materials for you and will provide training. As event dates get closer, I will send you an email with details for each event. Please use that email to respond or contact me (Diana Whitehouse) at [email protected] to add your name to my email list. You may also phone me at 323-4239 if you have any questions.
