Dear Stillson Families, We had a busy month at Stillson. The 5 th graders had a presentation with Mrs. Kern, the middle school principal, and Mrs. Pukrop, next years 6th grade counselor. They also had registration night to help set a schedule for 6 th grade. First and 2nd grade went to the State Theater to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and had a great time. Some of our class- rooms have enjoyed the Outdoor Classroom at Lake Wissota. We fin- ished off the month with a Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible cele- bration on Thursday, Feb. 25th. Students were finishing up their BAMs and now we have many of the BAM classroom posters on the wall by the entry way TV. If you are at school, be sure to stop and take a look or ask your child about their BAMs! We are slowly getting ready for the Wisconsin state exam, which is called the Forward Exam, for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. You will see more infor- mation about is as it gets closer to test-taking time. We are starting it on April 4 for 5th grade and then April 11 with 4th grade and 3rd grade will begin on May 2nd. We have had a mid-year check-in with our school Scorecard that is di- rectly aligned with our district strategic plan and scorecard. Our action steps and progress monitoring show that Stillson is on track to meet our goals that we created this fall. I appreciate your continual connection with and support of your childs learning at Stillson as we move into the last trimester. Kindergarten Registration for 2016-17

The public elementary schools in Chippewa Falls are beginning to enroll children for kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year. Children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2016, and who will be entering kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year, and are not enrolled in Chippewa Falls BB4C, need to enroll.

*BB4C families will be contacted separately*

Anyone knowing of a family who has a child entering kindergarten this fall should direct this infor-mation onto them. To enroll your child, please visit the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District website at: http://cfsd.chipfalls.k12.wi.us/ and click the Enroll Online tile. If you do not have internet access please contact Peggy at (715) 720-1850 or visit the Administration Office located at 1130 Miles Street, Chippewa Falls, WI. At Stillson we will have our in-school orientation on Wednesday, April 20th, 2016. Starting in March, we will take reservations for one of our 3 sessions for those who are presently in a BB4C program, or who have en-rolled on line. If you have any questions regarding our in-school registration, feel free to call Jessica, Stillson Elementary, 715-726-2412.

Teacher Requests for Class Assignments for 2016-17

We discourage parents from requesting class assignments for their children. We work hard to achieve a bal-ance between the classes at each grade level. This balance takes into account academic achievements, boy/girl ratio, and behavior concerns. Any request makes this far more difficult. If a request is made, it must be in writing with very specific reasons for the request (forms are provided upon request from the office.) Educational reasons must be the primary focus of the request. The school team will consider your request when making the final decision. Requests must be submitted no later than April 15th. There is no guarantee that parent request will be honored. The balance of the classes as described above is of most importance.

Battle of the Books

Congratulations to our Battle of the Books teams on a great Battle season! These teams worked together to read 20 books, write questions and each book, and collaborate us-ing Google Classroom. A special congratula-tions to our state Battle team - Reading Rac-coons for representing Stillson at t he online state battle. Way to go Stingers!

Goal Setting Tips for Students:

First, write down what you want to do. For example, “Become a better baseball player.”

Next, make it specific. "I want to be able to get a base hit once each game."

Then, define steps you can take to make your goal happen by asking your-self the three W’s. "Who can help me with my goal?" A coach, teacher, parent, or friend? "What do I need to do to work toward my goal or make it happen?" Practice every day. "When will I work on my goal?" I will practice for 15 minutes twice a week.

Last, monitor your progress. I will have my parents videotape my swing. I will get feedback from my coach.

(Ideas originally printed in Parents magazine 2006)

Nutrition from the Kitchen by Melissa Panchyshyn

National Nutrition Month March is National Nutrition Month, so what better time to talk nutrition. "Savor the Flavor of Eat-ing Right" is this year's Nutrition Month theme, so what does that mean? The American Dietetics Associ-ation is encouraging everyone to take time to enjoy food traditions and appreciate the pleasures, flavors and social experiences food can add to our lives. Developing a mindful eating pattern that includes nutri-tious and flavorful foods is the BEST way to savor the flavor of eating right! Mindful eating is just one way to savor the flavor of eating right but what is mindful eating and how does one eat mindfully? The core principles of mindful eating include: being aware of the nourish-ment which is available through the process of food preparation and eating, choosing enjoyable and nutri-tious foods, acknowledging food preferences without judgment, recognizing and honoring physical hun-ger and satiety cues, and using wisdom to guide eating decisions. When eating taking time to appreciate the flavor, textures and overall experience can be very beneficial. When people take their time they are being more mindful of what and how much they are eating. Today, most people are too busy and will often eat quickly and mindlessly, which often makes us over eat. Here are a few tips and tricks to eat more mindfully. 1. Eat like a gourmet by smelling, touching and savoring every bite. 2. Sit down and focus on eating- Avoid eating while standing or multitasking. 3. Put your fork down between bites- Slowing down helps you to eat more mindfully. 4. Rate your hunger before you eat, and ask yourself are you really hungry? 5. Don't fight cravings- Acknowledge the craving and respond thoughtfully. Were you thinking about chocolate or is it your afternoon habit? Is there a healthier way you can indulge? Research shows that ig-noring carving makes them stronger. 6. Eat your favorite food last. Our memories encode the last bit of the best. You are less likely to reach for a treat later if you have a strong memory of enjoying your last bite. 7. Be mindful when cooking. Enjoy the process instead of rushing through it. Be mentally present when you chop, slice or stir. Breath in the aroma of what you are cooking. 8. Place healthy foods where you can see them. Keep bowls of fruit on counters, along with other pro-duce. Keeping unhealthy food out of sight can help keep them off your mind. 9. Sip water between bites. It's a good way to not only slow your eating down but it also helps fill you up. 10. Try new foods! Get out of mindless eating ruts, challenge yourself to cook and/or get something new once a week. During the month of March try and savor the flavor of eating right by using the above tips to eat more

mindfully!

Introducing Makerspaces

Passion + Opportunity + Independent Exploration = Innovation

This spring, students will be able to come to the library to participate in Makerspac-es. We will be starting with whole classes during library times this year and progress-ing to other times. Makerspaces allows students to be creative and innovative as they explore new ways to build the tallest structure, create a free standing marble run, build a bridge that can hold a deck of cards, create an image using cardboard, etc. Makerspaces also teaches students 21st century skills such as collaborating, communicating, problem solving and critical thinking. The following supplies will be needed to make this possible:

If you have any extras of these at home, please send them to the library with your child. This idea to start having Markerspace in our library came from a Skype call with Mrs. Shan-non Hyman from Kaechele Library in Glenn Allen, Virginia. Other elementary schools in our district are starting them as well! Ms. Library Media Specialist

Family Connections-Class Offerings

Cartridges for Cash

We are collecting empty inkjet and toner cartridges to turn in for cash! We have partnered with a company that will pay us for our empty cartridges and issue a check for their value on a monthly basis. Most empty inkjet cartridges are worth $1 to $2.50 each, and some laser cartridges are worth up to $8.00! Our “paycheck” could add up fast, so please help by bringing all the cartridges you use! Here’s how you can help:

Don’t put empty cartridges in the trash! Please bring all empty cartridges to the LMC. Bring empty cartridges from home and add to the collection (and our check!) They will also take our recycled and refurbished cartridges to dispose in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

Be A-Mazing

At the end of the 2nd trimester we challenged the Stillson students to be even more amazing than ever before. We started a new incentive called “BAM” (Be A-Mazing)!!! Stillson staff watched extra careful-ly for students following directions, staying focused, working hard, helping their peers etc. These positive student behaviors were reward-ed with a “shout out” to the class, a fist bump, and a box filled on the classroom “BAM” chart. Our goal was to fill at least two charts per classroom by February 25th. Our reward for completing our goal and our end of trimester celebration was an amazing magic show funded by the Stillson PTO. Magician and illusionist Rick Smith Jr. put on an amazing performance for our whole school on Thursday February 25th. For the past 20 years, Rick has been astounding audiences with trademark card throwing, close up magic, sleight of hand, and stage shows with unbelievable feats of mentalism. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Rick travels nationally performing more than 600 shows every year in-cluding award ceremonies, fundraisers, and humanitarian missions to third-world countries. The Stillson students and staff loved being enter-

OUR 3 BS: BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL AND BE RESPONSIBLE

Students at Stillson have been working hard to follow the school-wide behavioral expectations. All students are able to earn blue tickets as a reward for following the expectations. Kindergar-ten, first, and second grade hand theirs in for a weekly drawing, while third, fourth, and fifth grade students save their blue tickets for reward menu items. New this year on the reward menu are community coupon choices. The community has graciously partnered with us to re-ward positive behavior. These businesses include Moldy's Archery and Tackle, McDonald's, High Roller Skating Rink, EC Children's Museum, Eau Claire Sport Center, Culver's, Taco Johns, Subway, and Karate America. As students save their blue tickets, they can turn them in to earn a coupon from one of these local business. Maybe your family will be enjoying a sub sandwich in the near future or a night of fun on Fridays at the Eau Claire Sports Center! Congratulations to this month’s blue ticket drawing winners, menu redemptions and students that earned bus tokens this month! Way to go and thank you for following our 3 Be’s!

Remember the more blue tickets you earn each week, the better your chances to get chosen for a 3B prize.

POISON PREVENTION AND TREATMENT TIPS

March 20 – 26 is poison prevention week. In 2013, poison control

centers managed 3.1 million calls-that averages out to almost 8,400

per day! The majority of poisonings occur in the home and are acci-

dental. Among children, these things often cause poisonings:

-Medicines

-Pain killers

-Household cleaners

-Hydrocarbons (such as lamp oil, kerosene, gasoline, lighter fluid)

-Plants

Most poisonings occur when parents or caregivers are home but not paying attention. Be especially careful

when there is a change in routine. Holidays, visits to and from relatives and other special events put children at

greater risk.

Ways to prevent accidental poisoning:

-Store medicine, cleaners, paints/varnishes and pesticides in their original packaging in locked cabinets

or containers, out of sight and reach of children

-Install a safety latch-that locks when you close the door-on child-accessible cabinets containing harm-

ful products

-Purchase and keep all medicines in containers with safety caps. Discard unused medication

-Check the label each time you give a child medicine to ensure proper dose

-Never tell a child that medicine tastes like candy

-Never place poisonous products in food or drink containers

-Keep coal, wood, or kerosene stoves in safe working order.

-Maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Treatment

If your child is unconscious, not breathing or having seizures due to poison contact or ingestion, call 911. If

your child has come in contact with poison, and has mild or no symptoms, call your poison control center at

1-800-222-1222

Immediate treatment tips:

Swallowed poison: remove item from the child and have child spit out any remaining substance. Do

not make your child vomit!

Skin poison: remove the child ’s clothes and rinse the skin with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes

Eye poison: Flush the child’s eye by holding the eyelid open and pouring a steady stream of room tempera-

ture water into the inner corner

Poisonous fumes: Take the child outside or into fresh air immediately. If child has stopped breathing,

start CPR and do not stop until the child breathes or help arrives
