4TH OF JULY
AT THE HYATT
Once again many of the Bastrop Area Cruisers enjoyed celebrating our national holiday at the Lost Pines Hyatt. The Hyatt guests enjoyed the display of vehicles, and the Cruisers enjoyed the day partaking in the hotel activities, the
BBQ dinner, and, of course, the magnificent fireworks display that evening.

BREAKFAST AT THE HUGHES’ GARAGE
JULY 9
What a lovely morning to spend with Cruiser friends in Jeff and Maria Hughes’ amazing garage. I heard several comments about how it would be easy to live in it—all the creature comforts in place. Our collective thanks to Jeff
and Maria for the tour, the excellent casserole, and the coffee. Your efforts were sincerely appreciated.

McDADE WATERMELON FEST
JULY 9
Oh, man, was it a hot day in McDade! But as usual the Watermelon Fest/Car Show drew a large crowd and quite a few Cruiser cars in the show, Janie Amescua sent along this write up along with her thanks for the Cruiser judges who volunteered their time to make their 68th Fest a success. Be sure to read the next page about our own Janie
and Andy Amescua and what they mean to the McDade community.
From Janie: The McDade Watermelon Festival Car Show drew 129 entries—our biggest one so far. Our special thanks for the support of the Cruisers: Attending were Dave Beegle, Gary and Barbara Baker, Robert Noah, Russ and Zelda Richards, Tommy and Shirley Pearson, Ron Bowman, Bob and Nancy Martin, Bruce and Eleonore Mungiguerra, Mark Lisle, Bill Dodge, Chad and Kim Arnold, Roland Damari and Car Show Committee members Roger and Janice
Payne, Andy and Janie Amescua.

2016 PARADE MARSHALS—McDADE WATERMELON FESTIVAL
The McDade Watermelon Festival Association is proud to announce Andy and Janie (Queen) Amescua as Parade Marshals for the 68th McDade Watermelon Festival. Andy and Janie have
worked with the Festival since its 50th year. Andy began by helping with the parade and soon he and Janie were the “Parade Committee” for several years—this was when the parade was at 3:00 in the afternoon! Janie, having served as 1969 Teenage Queen was very familiar with the Festival’s activities. She and her mom helped with cut-ting pies that were served with the BBQ meal. Janie helped with the typing of the cookbook published for the 50th Festival, and thereafter helped with whatever needed to be done. She served on the advertising committee and joins friends in putting out Festival flyers in all the surrounding towns,. She, Melba Skubiata and Jane Davis headed out last week, flyers in hand, telling all to come to the Festival. Janie also served as MWFA secretary for several years and is currently the secretary. Andy is on the Board of Directors having served numerous years. Festival time will find Andy teaming up with Wayne Skubiata to do all sorts of things that “somebody needs to take care of”. The Amescuas have also helped update the Festival’s float several times. Sixteen years ago Andy and Janie joined Roger and Janie Payne, Earl and Kathi Gremillion, and Carl and Lola Cole in setting up the very first Watermelon Festival car show with the idea of inviting more visitors to the Festival. This year, Andy and Janie did not have enough to do beside working at the car show, so along with a group of others are setting up the very first Riding Mower Rodeo for the Festival. And in the spring, Janie and Janie Payne head out to the Watermelon Patch to plant those big melon seeds, and fertilize and water and water, and water. And a couple of times they brought in big, big melons. The Amescuas’ other community activities have included helping with the McDade Historical society suppers and bake sales. Andy and Janie enjoy working with their friends in McDade and tackling whatever needs to be done.

AT the BASTROP HEB
JULY 16
On a hot Saturday, July 16, the Cruisers were invited to display their cars and to sell raffle tickets in the HEB parking lot. HEB was selling hot dogs and drinks in an effort to raise money towards Stuffing the Bus, a way to provide school supplies to kids who might not be able to afford them. HEB was, and is, a great sponsor of the Veteran’s Day Car Show, so it is a pleasure to help them out with the Cruiser cars display. And it was reported that the ladies
sold 443 raffle tickets that day, the most sold in one location other than at the car show. Great work!

JULY SOCIAL
JULY 20
We surely know how to fill up the long table at Murphy’s, don’t we? At last count there were 28 Cruisers enjoying dinner. A few might have slipped in after the picture taking, but there is always a good turnout at Murphy’s. Murphy’s did its usual good job of delivering some really good eats. That long table makes it hard to take pictures though. (unless you sit near the photographer!) Next social will be at Neighbors on Wednesday, August17 at 6:00 or
whenever you get there. Hope to see you there.

THIS AND THAT
LOOK WHAT STEVE DEWIRE FOUND N TOKYO
There is a History Garage in Daiba, just over the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo. Barb and I were visiting a shopping area that was new to us and happened to look down a corridor to see the entrance. The whole display is actually sponsored by Toyota and has a complete section dedication to racing. We were so surprised to see the American cars, and it was so fun to
walk through.
