While both of these areas are changing rapidly, both domains are appropriately moving to a heightened focus on the consumer. We see this with the increased demands for “patient centered care” in health care delivery systems and “learner/student centered focus” in higher education settings. As I think about these two areas, there are common intersecting themes that our consumers want: • Increased Accessibility • Flexibility • Technology Enhanced Deliveries • Connectivity • Personalized Approach • High Value/Cost Beneficial • Quality • Evidence-Based Models • Generational and Cultural Sensitivity During the past several years, we have been moving strategically with a consumer fo- cused mindset. Examples include: revising student advisement scheduling, increasing summer options to facilitate earlier program completion (BSN, MSN, DNP, and PhD), piloting 8 week semester options for RN-BSN students,” flipping the classrooms”, on- line courses, community/patient engaged research, care coordination, and others. As our purposeful strategic agendas are realized, our state, national, and global impact con- tinues to grow. Additionally, our national and global prominence as a premier College of Nursing also continues to rise, as evidenced by our rankings and continued measured growth. However, there is more work to be done. With the help of several thought leaders, our talented faculty and staff will be looking prospectively at the future domains of health care and higher education within a consumer focused lens at our “2025” May retreat. Our USC CON village will continue to lead, innovate, and partner to prepare the future nursing workforce and improve health care and healthcare delivery systems for South Carolina’s citizens, families, communities, and beyond. The annual Hero Awards, givenby Stand Up Carolina, recognizeaccountable bystanders—commu-nity members who stand up, take action and make a difference in the life of another. They are Caro-linians who have helped others in ordinarywaysthathadanextraor-dinary impact. Nancy Ewing successfully defend-
ed her DNP Quality ImprovementProject,“BestPracticeforaStandard-ized and SafeRegisteredNurse ShiftHandoff.”
Caroline Newman has been accepted to the NYU nurse extern program inNewYorkCity.

Mary McGuiness has ac-cepted a job at MedstarGeorgetown UniversityHospital in WashingtonDC.Shehasacceptedapo-sitionintheNewGraduateNurse Residency Programon the Surgical IntensiveCare Unit, which is where she completed her extern-ship this past summer.
She is also the recipientofthe senior clinical practice award.
I served as a member of the morale team this year. The purpose of this team is to encourage participants, a.k.a heroes, to stand on their feet for14hours and continue to raise funds forPalmettoHealthChildren’sHospital.
BenjaminBrown(picturedaboveleft)wastreatedattheNICUforatumoronhisairway.Sincetheinitialdiagnosis,Benjamin’stu-mor has grown back and he has undergone further surgeries. After speaking to us about his experiencewithPalmettoHealthChil-dren’sHospitalhethankedusforallwedoandthendonatedhisallowanceof$20toourfundraisinggoal!
Marcus Lattimore (pictured above right) was there to say a fewwordsandtogettheeventstarted.HesaidthisaboutDanceMara-thon:“It’sforthekids.It’snotaboutme,it’snotaboutyou.It’sallforthekids.”Hearingsuchaselflessstatementfromafellowgame-cock really got the crowd inspired to tackle 14 hours of standing ForTheKids.
USCDanceMarathon is a student run philanthropic organiza-tionthatraisesfundsandsupportforPalmettoHealthChildren’sHospital,ourlocalMiracleNetworkHospital.Throughoutthe14-hour event participants, a.k.a heroes, are encouraged to stand and learn the line dance that is taught by the morale members as well as continuetheirfundraisingefforts.ThisyearUSCDM’sgoalwastoraiseHalfaMillioninHalftheTime.InthepastDanceMarathonhas been a 24 hour event but this year we decided to shake things up.ThroughouttheeventparticipantshearfromMiracleFamiliesabout their experiencewithPalmettoHealthChildren’sHospitalandhowgrateful they are for events likeDanceMarathon.Thisreally helps put things in perspective and gives you the motivation topush through.ThisyearUSCDMwasable to raise$501,528allForTheKidsofPalmettoHealthChildren’sHospital.Westandfor 14 hours to representwhat theMiracleChildren have gonethrough as well as to honor those who were not as fortunate. We will dance until there are no longer sick children and we dance so thatnochildeverhastofightalone!

Research Spotlight: Bernardine M. Pinto, PhD, Associate Dean for Research
Research has shown that exercise can en-hance overall health and recovery, includ-ing mood and fatigue, for cancer survivors. Little has been done, however, to translatethis knowledge into a community-setting. Dr. Bernardine Pinto is trying to changethat. She has devoted much of her careerto improving the quality of life among cancer survivors. Dr. Pinto is the princi-pal investigator on a $2.5 million NIH R01 entitled, Peers Promoting Exercise
Adoption and Maintenance among Cancer Survivors. Sheandherre-search team had previously tested the effects of a 3-month telephone-based exercise programoffered by community peer volunteers to breast cancersurvivors. This work was conducted in partnership with the Reach to Re-coveryprogramoftheAmericanCancerSociety(NewEnglandDivision).Reach to Recovery volunteers are breast cancer survivors themselves and theyweretrainedtooffertheexerciseprogramtootherbreastcancersur-vivors. This theory-based intervention was successfully delivered and found tosignificantlyincreaseexerciseat3months(post-intervention)andat6monthscomparedtoacontactcontrolcondition.Dr.Pinto’sresearchteamis now proposing to enhance the intervention to support not only the adop-tionofexercise(3months)butalsoitsmaintenanceat12months.Iftheproposed trial demonstrates positive effects, the team will design a dissemi-nationtrialofapeermentoredapproachforexerciseadoptionandmain-tenanceamongbreastcancersurvivorsinacommunitysetting.Partneringwithcommunity-basedcancercareorganizationsthatofferpeermentoringcanexpandthereach(“scaleup”)ofeffortstoenhancesurvivors’recovery.

Dr. Ronit Elk has been invited to serve on the American Acad-emy of Hospice andPalliative Medicine(AAHPM) DiversityAdvisoryGroup.
Dr. DeAnne Hilfinger Messias was awarded the 2015 Carolina Trustee Professorship in the area ofPublicHealth,Engineering,MedicalSciences,andSciences. The award is given annually by the BoardofTrustees to a tenured, fullprofessor who demonstrates a record of teaching excellences as well as arecord of outstanding performance in research and in public service and outreach activities.
