ICE Magazine

Editor: Another Club A.G.M. over and done with, welcome to the new committee, please give them your support, they are not easy positions, and all are volunteers. I have volunteered to continue as your magazine editor, I do find it an interesting commitment albeit quite time consuming. However I would find the role a lot easier with the help of members forwarding input to be included in the magazine. I do get a lot of jokes sent, a number not being suitable for publishing (having had my ear bent in the past) but I am sure you don't want the magazine to become a rag full of jokes. Regards, Terry Smith

PRESIDENT’S LETTER First of all a big thank you to all those members who voted me in as President, I think the AGM went really well, no fracas and no police called! Please inform your new committee of any ideas you have for events, trips or how we can improve the club. It was brought up at the AGM about a lift and a disabled parking spot. The latter can be answered in the near future but a lift needs more work and thought and will be brought to an AGM to be voted on. There are many events being organised for the coming months so please support as many you possibly can. As always more volunteers are required for bar work and catering, training is given so please think seriously about helping our club. Wishing you all a happy Easter, Sue

It is with regret we announce the passing of Chris and Eddy Freyne, the couple having sadly passed away over the past fifteen months. They were active members of I.C.E. having been bar volunteers and always willing to help. Chris passed away during January 2014, and Eddy during January 2015. We remember them as very good friends of ours, and will be missed, a wonderful couple sadly missed. Submitted by Bonny and Christie Brown

Doug & I were overwhelmed by the generosity of the club at the AGM. Wonderful flowers - really wonderful, they look great in two large vases. Thank you also for the restaurant vouchers - couldn't have picked a better present, or surprise! Congratulations & best wishes to Sue in her new role as President.

Thank you all once again, Joanna & Doug

Well I’m blowed…. Honorary Member indeed! I’d like to thank the Committee for even considering, let alone selecting me for this hon-our and although I feel that there are others far more deserving, I gratefully accept. Honorary Membership of any club means that you have probably done something that is regarded as “going the extra mile” in your club life for the benefit of the other members… and I thought I was just having fun! Margaret & I regard membership of ICE as a bit of an honour in itself and really don’t know what we would have done in Estepona if we hadn’t joined; it has definitely become more of a way of life than a social club. To be recognised by one’s peers is a great feeling, so once again, many thanks to you all. Vic Loughran. P.S. I’m often mistaken for Doug by newer members and wonder if this is what’s happened here!

Monthly Computer Tips – April 2015

Android Apps

Google Translate

Google’s Translation app has recently been updated. It now instantly translates any text you

point your phone at while in the camera app. On your phone’s screen you will see the trans-

lated text in place of the text you are pointing at. Translations between a very wide number of

languages are possible. Download from the Play Store.

Microsoft News. Microsoft have announced that all genuine users on both Windows 7 and

Windows 8 will receive a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it is released. There will be a pe-

riod on one year during which existing users can get the free upgrade.

Free Apps and Software It is now possible to get “paid for” programs for free. The website

www.giveawayoftheday.com offers one off downloads of paid software for free. The snag is

that you must download and register within a 12 hour time frame. After that time you will have

to pay to download the software. Once you have installed it and registered there is no limit on

how long you can use it. Register your email address with the site and you will receive a daily

reminder of what is available. Android apps are also available at

www.android.givewayoftheday.com. Apps for your iPhone are available under a similar

system at www.iPhone.giveawayoftheday.com. As far as we are aware these apps will also

work on the iPad.

A further source of free software, for which you would otherwise have to pay, is www.appgratis.com. You can register your device, android, iPhone or iPad (or all three!) and you will receive daily emails of the offers available. The Appgratis app is available for download on android devices from the Google Play Store. Unfortunately Apple do not like the idea of giving things away for free so there is no equivalent on the Apple App Store!

WARNING: Much of the software / apps may not be of interest, but persevere and you may

well find something to your liking.

Remember the Computer Group meets at the Clubhouse on the third Friday of the month at

11.00am. No need to book – just turn up. We have WiFi broadband internet available, so why

not bring your laptop / netbook / tablet etc along.

If you have any questions or suggested topics for future please email us

Scam of the Month – April 2015 Bogus Holiday Scams This is one of the most costly scams, with the average victim losing £3,030, according to the OFT. They usually work as follows: you're handed a scratch card and discover you have won a free holiday. You have to attend a presentation to collect your prize. The presentation is usually at a swanky hotel, with glossy brochures and posters all adding to the air of authenticity. However, genuine holiday clubs will allow the consumer time to look over a contract before signing it, while bogus holiday clubs will pressurize hopeful holidaymakers into signing on the dotted line, without reading through everything properly. After committing yourself you will suddenly find that your 'free' holiday has a lot of extra costs, such as transport and other less obvious but nonetheless 'compulsory' extras. Be especially wary of presentations that ply you with unlimited alcohol or offer special discounts that only last that day, and withstand the pressure to sign anything until you have taken the information away with you to study in your own time. If you have already signed up to one of these clubs, contact the UK's European Consumer Centre (ECC) on 08456 040503 or via its website, ukecc.net. The ECC can advise you on your rights in your specific case and help in cross-border disputes. Submitted by Peter Dowd

Be aware should you see any of these markings on or near your’s or neighbours

Wednesday 18th February - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out Once again two new venues found for the ever hungry Romeos and Juliets. Juliets venue was the Aroma Indian Restaurant at El Pilar, and they enjoyed a special menu thanks to arrangements by Maggie. Massive selection of starters, excellent main meal accompanied by rice and naan bread. Lovely decorated venue and service could not be faulted. The restaurant offers fine Indian Cui-sine with a substantial menu & the freshest ingredients. If you become a regular you can arrange a discount card.

The Romeos venue was the Curry House Indian Restaurant at Benavista, a short distance away from the above. This we found to be quite a small and friendly restaurant, however the food we found to be very tasty chosen from a good value menu del dia. Thanks Doug for the organising.

Tuesday 17th February - Pancake Races and Lunch Unfortunately not a pleasant day, it was raining and quite cold so the ladies and gents pancake races had to be cancelled. However a ‘Tossing’ contest was quickly arranged. Winning ‘Tosser’s’: Ladies winner Bibbi Shorter. Gents winner Dave Hackett. Later we all enjoyed a pancake lunch all prepared fresh by Wilma assisted by Brenda and Diane, thanks to all. Thanks to the exceptionally well dressed Ken and Georgina who manned the bar, and to Doug for arranging the event.

Monday 3rd March - Mystery Trip Eventually our bus arrived 35 minutes late due to a misunderstanding of starting venue by the driver. Our visit included a tour of a bread bakery and then excellent lunch at Jimena de la Frontera Restau-rant. What an amazing selection of sweets!!!!!!!!

Saturday 28th February - Andalucía Day About 20 members of I.C.E. attended a great evening organised by the Manilva Foreign Residents at Bodega El Molino Sabinillas. For just 15€ each we enjoyed 2 welcome drinks, selection of tapas, and choice

of 2 main courses. We were entertained during the evening by an excellent quartet of guitar, singer and 2 very good flamenco dancers to which some of our members could not help but to join in. The Bodega is a “Hidden jewel of a tapas bar ... basement with brick arches and great tapas - well known to be best in Sabinillas.” The mushrooms are to die for, give the bar a try if you are in the area. You will find it on the far corner of the car park behind the farmacia.

Should you have suggestions for any event or activity at your clubhouse, or for a trip whether for a day or

longer period, please contact a member of the committee. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Saturday 14th March - Salon Varieties Trip - Oklahoma On a lovely sunny evening first pickup set off from Sabinillas, we had many pick up points after that until we had a near coach full of 36 members and guests travelling to Fuengirola arriving to cloudy skies. We all seemed to disappear in different directions in search of eating and watering holes before we made our way to the theatre for the show and pick up our tickets from our organiser and ticket lady Joan. The show itself was almost three hours in length and included many favourites: "Surrey with the fringe on top" and of course "Oklahoma," "People will say were in love," "Oh what a beautiful morning" and "I'm just a girl who can't say no." On a personal note it's more years than I care to remember since I saw Oklahoma in the cinema and do not remember all the songs, I do seem to remember it was Gordon Macrae as the lead in the film, with the most popular songs you found yourself singing along with the cast. Personally I found the first half rather long, as was the queue for the ladies but the sing-ing more than made up for that. It was our first visit to the Salon Varieties and found the company very professional and all seemed to have good voices, I believe they hope to put on Mama Mia later in the year which sounds good to us. The downside was when we left the theatre we found it was raining but it did not dampen our spir-its. Thank you Joan for organising the trip, and I am sure a good time was had by all. Diane Hackett

Tuesday 17th March - St. Patricks Celebration at the club

Wednesday 18th March - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out

So the Juliets, no fault of Maggie’s, had no venue this month, so after much consideration and delib-eration, and out of the kindness of our hearts, the Romeos allowed the girls to join them at the popu-lar venue Restaurante La Torre. 35 members enjoyed a very pleasant menu del dia. Once again we were not disappointed, great value.

Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop, forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Sunday 3rd May - 6 day Holiday Trip to Galicia Day 1 - Costa del Sol to Galicia Our coach will be collecting us at the usual pick-up points along the Costa del Sol for our transfer to Malaga airport. We will check in for our direct flight to Santiago de Compostela. Once there, our coach will take us to 0 Grobe and our quaint family run Hotel Villa Jua-nita*** bed and breakfast. Free time for dinner. Hotel web site: http://www.villajuanita.com Day 2 - Boats, mussels, ribeiro wine and more. After enough time for a leisurely breakfast we take a walk in 0 Grebe and wind up in the port area. Here we board our boat and guide will tell us all about one of the main sources of income in the area: mussels and oysters. The boat will take us out to the farms in the "ria" and the expert crew will show us how this traditional way of life works. The best however is on the way back: we have the chance to sample the beautiful mussels and wash them down with the local Ribeiro wine: eat and drink as much as you like! Once off the boat, we take a stroll across the turn-of-the-century bridge for a visit to la Isla de la Toja, a very exclusive spa area with a lot of interesting facts about it. Free time for dinner. Day 3 - Vigo, Pontevedra and Combarro Today we set off south to Vigo, the biggest city in Galicia and one of the most important ports in Spain. Its location on the ria and its geographical features have made Vigo into what it is today: a hub lot the fishing industry. A walk around the centre of the city will be followed by some free time to sample some of the local delicacies. Our next stop is Pontevedra, the capital of the province, a city with a very nice atmosphere to it, a broad "alameda" and a lovely pedestrianised centre with great chances for coffees or drinks in the quaint little squares. Finally, on our way back to 0 Grobe, we stop at a small and very typical fishing village: Combarro. A walk though Combarro is a delightful experience, with its narrow winding streets, "horreos" in front of each house and the view of the sea down each little alleyway. Free time for dinner. Day 4 - Albarifio wine The most appreciated wine in the region is Albarino. This tasty wine is particular to this part of Galicia and goes very well with all the local foods. We will be visiting one of the local "bodegas" where they'll go through the history of this wine, its production and finally a taste of two of their favourites. I'm sure more than one will take some home! Once done here we continue to nearby Isla de Aruosa, one of the picturesque Galician islands in the ria, where we'll have free time for a walk and some lunch before we return to O Grobe. Day 5 - At leisure After some days of visits, we take a day at leisure in O Grobe. It's a lovely part of the world and walking along its streets and port is a relaxing experience. For those who would like more active alternative, our guide will provide you with suggestions. Day 6 - Santiago de Compostela and return After breakfast, we check out of Hotel Villa Juanita and say "adios" to O Grobe. We take a full day ex-cursion which will include an official guided tour in the cultural, religious and administrative capital of Galicia: Santiago de Compostela. This destination of pilgrims is a stunning city of granite, with a spec-tacular cathedral and a beautiful old quarter. After our guided tour, we'll have time for lunch in one of the local streets (e.g. Rua do Franco, albeit nothing to do with the dictator) and free time in the after-noon before we take our transfer back to Santiago airport. Our coach will also be waiting for us at Malaga airport to take us safely back home. Hasta la vista Danny!

What Should You Do With Your Pensions? By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 [email protected] The new pension freedom from April 2015 is welcome news for anyone with UK pension funds, whether they are resident in the UK or here in Spain. If you live here, it could help you restructure your pension savings so that they are more suited to your current circumstances as a Spanish resi-dent, though you also need to consider possible future plans. Your pension savings are essential for providing you with financial security right through retirement. Deciding what to do with your funds once the new rules come into effect could be one of the most important financial decisions you make. It is therefore vital that you have all the facts about your new options, and then carefully consider the implications of each option. This includes taxation in the UK and Spain; leaving the balance to your heirs; what control you have over investment options; what income will be generated, and ensuring you do not run out of funds in your later years. You can only determine which option is right for you once you have weighed them all up. Specialist, professional advice is essential. It is the only way to ensure you have all the information and understand how each option affects you. Your personal situation is unique – just because you hear of people taking one approach does not mean it is right for you. Here is a summary of some of the key changes for those aged over 55 with defined contribution schemes. From 6th April 2015 you will be able to draw down as much of your pension funds as you like, even the whole amount. You could take a series of lump sums from your pension funds without having to enter into a drawdown policy. The 55% pension ‘death tax’ will be abolished, including for annuities. Your beneficiaries will receive the balance tax free if you die under age 75, or pay income tax, or 45% if taken as a lump sum, if you are over 75 (which could change to income tax rates from 2016). This does not affect people in final salary pensions. Many of the new pension options apply specifically to defined contribution schemes. From April 2015 those with private sector defined benefit pensions (final salary schemes) could transfer to a defined contribution scheme, but be aware that you could lose valuable benefits – so this would need very careful consideration. Transfers can only be made with advice from a pension transfer specialist regu-lated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. Most Public Sector schemes will not be able to transfer after April 2015. Taking professional advice from a regulated adviser will give you peace of mind that they are following all the rules and providing suitable advice for you. Sound financial planning and personalised advice is crucial, particularly for those with larger funds. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. Genealogy Group: The ICE genealogy group was launched on 18th April 2014, yes it was a year ago, and it was decided to launch at the regular computer meeting, as all researches from Spain would have to be done by the internet, and by using a computer. We had a very good attendance of 20 members at the launch meeting, and it was de-cided that we would meet at 11.00am on the 2nd Friday of the month, for the genealogy group meetings. I gave an explanation of my experience with genealogy in the last 25 years, together with information on how to get started, and how to record the information that is gathered. At the first meeting, one member, Richard Wood, explained that he knew very little about his family, other than his father, mother, and grandfather, and that his father emigrated to Australia with his father, and that his mother and father were married in Australia. Within a short period of time we were able to establish that his father and grandfather travelled to Aus-tralia on the same boat that his mother did, and although his father remained in Australia, his mother returned, only to travel back to Australia, arriving 1 month before they were married. We also discovered that Richard’s grandmother died when his father was 2, and his grandfather, mar-ried her sister 7 years after his first wife died. We have also been able to put him in touch with a 2nd cousin he knew nothing about, and they now exchange e-mails on an almost weekly basis. We have on average about 6 members who attend the meetings, and it is always nice to get new “members” to the group. We had a “new” member earlier in the year, who like Richard, said they had very little knowledge of their ancestors. Diana Brice came to the meeting with only a copy of a marriage certificate of her parents. In a short time we discovered that her grandfather came from Germany, she had always believed he was Russian, and that he was an artist who married a Belgium lady in London, moved to Liverpool with their 1 year old son (Diana’s father) and moved in to a dwelling on the top of a building where he re-moved a wall and replaced it by glass on which he painted, and it is now part of an art gallery. Their son, Diana’s father, became a photographer, which in the mid 1800’s was in the early stages of photography, and he became quite a famous photographer of his era. If you have ever considered that you might like to trace your ancestors, please come along to one of our meetings, on the 2nd Friday monthly, and although I won’t promise the earth, I am sure we can get some information about your family that you didn’t know. It doesn’t matter how many attend our meetings, be it two or twenty, I am sure we can find some infor-mation about your ancestors. It is a hobby that you may want to only be involved in a few months of the year, and that is OK, because one thing is for sure, the information about your ancestors will not dimin-ish, but may increase as more databases become available to search on line.

Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Dave Hackett. 636 326 599

The Guardia Civil has launched an online ‘denuncia’ system to make it easier for people to report an array of offences. The new ‘e-Denuncias’ service is now operational and will save people time and paperwork when reporting certain offences. The incidents that can be reported online include lost and found documents or property, vehicle theft, theft from a vehicle, robbery without violence and damage where the identity of the perpetrator is not known. In incidents where physical violence occurs, it is still necessary to report it in person. Once the offence is reported online, it will still be necessary to visit a Guardia Civil office within three days to confirm the initial report. However, incidents reported through the new online service will be given priority over incidents reported in person. The online ‘denuncia’ service can be found at https://e-denuncia.guardiacivil.es/eDenuncia/index.faces

'ICE Golf Society'. 'Away Day' to La Cala Golf Resort in February' This time we played Campo Asia, the second of the three courses at La Cala, and a much better day it was than our first, as reported last month. The weather was kind, the course was in much better condition and we completed the round in the prescribed time. Well done everyone. Steve McMurtry came in with 38 points, handicap cut for sure, on a difficult course and one that he had not played before so very well done indeed. Jack was second on 35 points and Coen 3rd also on 35 points. Embarrassment prevents the declaration of my score although it was better than Les's. Our next away day: Our final visit to La Cala, to play Campo Europa, will be on the 24th June. The green fee will be 39€ including shared buggy and a light breakfast. Tee off will be around 10.00. I am taking names now as we may be limited to 16 players. 'Spring is upon us, thank goodness, as is The Golf Society Spring Cup' and the, ever popu-lar, Presentation Lunch which follows. This year, on the 21st April, we return to the fabulous Valle Romano Golf Resort, Estepona. This course has been used for the European Tour 'Qualifying School' and is, therefore, maintained at a very standard. We will playing off of the Blue Tees, (5392 meters), for the men and the Red Tees, (4935 meters), for the Ladies. This compares to the Estepona Golf Club, used for last years Autumn Cup: Blue 5380 m. and Red 5073m. so not too long. The Green Fee will be about 67€ including shared buggy. The final figure is dependant upon final num-bers. Buggies will be permitted on the fairways, except par 3's, subject only to adverse weather condi-tions at the time. The entry form is already on the ICE notice board and filling up nicely so don't delay. The more playing the cheaper it will be. The Green Fee is payable directly to Valle Romano Golf Club and there is the 3€ entry fee which should be paid to me an the day. Non members are very welcome to play but conditions do apply: They must be invited by a member. Their club or federation handicap will be subject to a two strokes reduction. There will be a new Non Members prize for the top scoring guest as they will not be eligible for the members trophy and prizes. Please ensure that your guests are made aware of these conditions. Tickets for the Presentation lunch are available from Peter and Tessa Henry. Casares Golf Club 'Roll-Up' We play a twice weekly 'Roll-Up' stableford competition on Tuesdays and Fridays at Casares Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. Tee off times vary a little throughout the year but if you are interested arrive around about 08.00. We often have 12 or more players and it's all very friendly, light hearted, (in other words 'cut throat')!! and open to all levels. A sense of humour is well worth putting in the bag! Our annual 'Order of Merit' trophy is awarded to the player with the best ten cards from these 'Roll-Ups'. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web site for details of all activities.

Food For Thought

Submitted by Rosemary Ferguson

“The battle for today and in the future, is the real versus the virtual.”

SUDOKU ANS.

Some years ago, there was a Mensa convention in San Francisco. Mensa, as you know, is a national organization for people who have an IQ of 140 or higher. Several of the Mensa members went out for lunch at a local cafe . When they sat down, one of them discovered that their salt shaker contained pepper, and their pepper shaker was full of salt. How could they swap the contents of the two bottles without spilling any, and using only the implements at hand? Clearly -- this was a job for Mensa minds. The group debated the problem and presented ideas and finally, came up with a brilliant solution involv-ing a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer. They called the waitress over, ready to dazzle her with their solution. "Ma'am," they said," we couldn't help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt shaker. Contains pepper." But before they could finish .......... the waitress interrupted. "Oh -- sorry about that." She leaned over the table, unscrewed the caps of both bottles and switched them. There was dead silence at the Mensa table. Reminds me of the government, solutions would be so simple, but the brilliant minds have to make the situation difficult ....

The Irish Fisherman It was raining hard and a big puddle had formed in front of the Irish pub. An old man stood beside the puddle holding a stick with a string on the end and jiggled it up and down in the water. A visiting New Zealander asked the old man what he was doing. 'Fishing,' replied the old man. 'Poor old fool' thought the Kiwi, so he invited the old man to have a drink in the pub. Feeling he should start some conversation while they were sipping their whisky, the Kiwi asked, ‘And how many have you caught?' 'You're the eighth.'
