ANNUAL ARTICHOKE RUN

BY: Jim Dillinger

On March 8th, just as they’ve done for the last fifteen or sixteen years, the East Bay Chapter hosted a driving event, Cruise

To Castroville, which has come to be called The Artichoke Run. The formula for this event hasn’t changed much since its

inception, but then why change a good thing? It’s an open event, for members of our club as well as anyone else that would

like to join in. The result is a cruise of anywhere from 15 to 30 (or more) various different makes and models of special interest

vehicles gathered together to caravan to Pezzini Farms, just off Highway 1 in Castroville. The huge fields of artichokes

surround the quaint “produce stand” which is an outlet for gifts, an eclectic collection of food treats, and fresh artichokes of all

sizes. It doesn’t hurt the atmosphere any that the mighty Pacific Ocean is right across Highway 1 from the stand either. The

format for this event is intentionally set to be very laid back, with practically no demands on anyone’s time. It’s simply a

morning of cruising to a picturesque location, and enjoying spending time with friends, both new ones and old ones.

The East Bay Chapter generously provides a bag of artichokes for each vehicle entered in the cruise, and have recently

added a 50/50 raffle to the morning’s festivities to add a little interest (and possible profit) for any who want to buy in. The

owners of Pezzini Farms also take the time to check out all of the vehicles, and choose their favorite car and their favorite

truck. There’s no criteria required for their choices, other than they’re the car and truck they like the most.

Participants in the cruse hang out for about an hour or so, many sampling the fried artichoke hearts offered for sale there,

then anyone wanting to will head on down the coast a few miles to Monterey Bay, to enjoy the sights, play tourist, then have

some lunch at one of the many fine restaurants in the area..

A couple of folks that had a very special time on this run were Larry

and Georgette Maness. Their 56 T-Bird was selected as the favorite car

by the folks at Pezzini Farms, then on top of that, Georgette was the

lucky winner of the 50/50 raffle. Needless to say, they went home happy.

Other winners were Leo Martinez, who had his 37 Chevy pickup

chosen as the favorite pickup by Pezzini Farms personnel, and Clarence

Dobbs, who was the happy recipient of an extra bag of artichokes as a

consolation prize after the 50/50 drawing. The prizes and awards were

great fun for everyone on the cruise, and we congratulate the winners of

each of them.

As always this event is a great way to kick off the run season.

Hopefully, you’ll set aside an early Saturday in March of 2015 (exact date

to be announced later) to join East Bay Chapter and friends for another

laid back “Cruise To Castroville”.

Hope you enjoy a few pictures from the run on the next page.

TRIVIA

Last month’s question: What was the first car to be offered with a “perpetual guarantee

Answer: The 1904 Acme, from Reading, PA. The

guarantee didn’t mean much though since the

Acme went out of business in 1911.(Thanks for

the right answer to Bob Hansen, Modesto

Chapter

This month’s question: What was the first car fitted with an alternator, rather than a direct current dynamo?

EAST BAY CHAPTER

EAST BAY BANTER

BY: Ken Rogers

Hi from East Bay,

Our Artichoke Run, on March 8th, had a great turnout,

our best ever. The vintage vehicles cruising down

Highway 101 were looking good. Pezzini Farms, in

Castroville, was the destination. The store has a great

variety of items to purchase, and all the cruisers received

a bag of artichokes from East Bay Chapter. There was a

50/50 drawing that had a good payout. From Castroville, it

was on to Monterey, by most of the participants, for lunch.

The weather was like a summer day. Mark your calendars

for next year, we want to see you there.

Don’t forget, San Joaquin Chapter is having a run on

April 6th in Tracy, and the Easter Run is on April 12

th in

Lodi. Let’s support these runs. Our club members work

hard planning runs for all to enjoy.

FUN FORD FACTS

The Ford Mustang turns 50 this year. Gail Wise, at age

22 bought the first production Mustang in 1964. She paid

$3,447.50 for it, and still owns it today. Jay Leno owns

several Mustangs, including a 1965 Shelby GT-350. Steve

McQueen drove a Shelby GT-390 in the legendary 9

minute, 42 second chase scene in the 1969 movie ‘Bullitt’.

A 2014 Mustang V-6 premium convertible costs, today,

$31,610. There’s no extra charge for the all-time

favorite…RED.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 1903, the inventor of the windshield wiper, Mary

Anderson, got her inspiration as she watched motorists

wipe snow from their windshields with their hands. Ms.

Anderson’s design called for the driver to use a lever on

the inside of the automobile to manually activate “a

swinging arm that mechanically swept off the ice and

snow.” Eventually the windshield wiper became the

mechanized device that we’re still using today.

Modesto Happenings

John Walsh’s 2000 Chevy daily driver sprung a leak in the transfer case (a $6 part typical of a Chevy), and he was able to fix it himself for about $400. Luckily Tom Tomberlin has a car hoist that he made available (along with his help) to work on it. John was advised “it’s gonna get messy”, but didn’t listen until he was covered in oil. After a phone call to Linda for clean clothes, and lots of clean-up, they were able to finish. Truck’s good as new! Doesn’t leak a drop!

March 9

th was the Stockton car show and swap meet. Tom

Tomberlin and Tom Day went there to pass out flyers, but were not allowed to do this both inside the car show and outside the swap meet. Bob and Susan Hansen went to view the rusty parts, and to look for new tires for the go-cart soon to be raffled. While the Turlock Swap Meet in January is a sea of rusty parts – I would say Stockton is a puddle. While we were walking around, I was quite pleasantly surprised to see Art Davis enjoying the day there. He is looking good, out of rehab, and getting stronger every day. Way to go, Art! See you at the Club runs.

John Walsh passed up activities this weekend to go on an annual pig hunt – there will be no bacon for breakfast in the Walsh household, and no pictures for publication.

Who’s Working on What Tom Day reports that his “all” ’29 pickup (formerly 29-30-31) has been taken to the paint shop. Hope to see the sparkling gold paint soon. Pictures, too.

Well, we have sprung our clocks forward and now it is time to dust off our trucks and go to the monthly car shows. In our

neck of the woods we have one every Friday night. My son’s girlfriend’s family call Friday’s no cook Friday’s. April 4th will be

the first of many Friday nights looking at great cars, talking to other car enthusiast’s and eating out. Oh, the waistline.

Art is officially home. He has a long road ahead of him. To top it off no sooner than coming home his Mom ended up in the

hospital with pneumonia. She is now at a care facility and is doing better, but has to get her lungs free of fluid in order for her

to come home. His Dad is living with him as Art has orders not to drive at the moment. And we just heard a couple of nights

ago that his grandson had been in the hospital with pneumonia for a couple of days. Art’s family has had a rough year all the

way around. So keep him in your thoughts as he keeps on recovering, as does his family.

Howard has been working diligently on the panel. He has the engine in it and actually drove it up and down the street in the

neighborhood. The goal is to get it ready for North South. It has been too long of a transformation so he cannot wait.

Another note both the Jim’s in our club (Jim Simmons and Jim Brown) lost their fathers in the last couple of months. Each

of them went peacefully. Jim Brown’s father was 100 and had taught exercise class at his care facility days before he passed.

Jim Simmons father was in his 70’s and did have some issues, but he went in his sleep. We want to give out our prayers to

these two as they both had a great a loss in their lives.

We hope to see everyone at the Easter Run. I will be taking orders for the jackets so if you are interested hunt me down.

At long last there’s finally some news to report on the 7th Annual Silicon Valley Cruise. We’ve known for a long time that it

will be held on Saturday, May 3rd

, but other than that, there has been a huge lack of information about any of the particulars.

It’s now official, the starting point will be the parking lot behind the Pep Boys Auto Parts store located at 3780 Stevens Creek

Blvd., in the Santa Clara/San Jose area (not real sure where the exact boundary line is). This is one short block east of

Saratoga Ave. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM, with the cruise leaving there at 9:00 AM. As always, at the registration,

entrants will have complimentary coffee and donuts, receive their goody-bags (that have actual “goodies” in them, not all

flyers and catalogues), get their event t-shirts, and have a chance to see Pep Boys new “Speed Shop”.

From Pep Boys, the group will again travel throughout the Silicon Valley/South Bay area to stops of interest. Yes, one of the

stops will be a winery. The final stop will be at Saratoga Springs, a picturesque, park like setting in the foothills of the Santa

Cruz Mountains, where each participant will be able to relax, spend some time admiring the scenery (mother nature’s beauty,

and beautiful vehicles), and be fed a free feast fit for royalty. The menu consists of: Santa Maria BBQ Steak, Chicken Milano,

BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Saratoga Super Dogs, fresh garden salad, pasta salad, potato salad, chili beans, coleslaw, fruit salad,

garlic bread, dessert, and complimentary soda, beer & wine.

If you haven’t sent in your entry, hurry and get it in. TIME’S RUNNING OUT!! May 3rd

is just around the corner, and you

won’t want to be left out of this fantastic, fun filled day. You can find a flyer/entry form at the back of this newsletter. Fill it out,

send it in, and get ready to have a great cruise.

SEE YOU THERE!!

We’re happy to report that Gary Bohn, Silicon Valley Chapter, is on the mend. His physical therapy is progressing

well, and if all goes well, he may even be home by the time your reading this blurb. Way to go Gary, it’s been a

long haul, and we’re really glad to hear you’ll be up and around soon.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went camping.

They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep.

Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and said: “Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you

see.”

Watson replied: “I see millions and millions of stars.”

Holmes said: “And what do you deduce from that?”

Watson replied: “Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some

planets like Earth out there. And if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life.”

And Holmes said: “Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody stole our tent.”

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS!!

The photo shown below is to let everyone know that there is going to be another order for club jackets

placed soon. Anyone wanting to get a club jacket needs to contact Karen Kleinert (Port City Chapter) and

let her know how many, what size(s), etc. We THINK the price is going to stay at $75, but at this time it’s

not guaranteed. It could go up, or down, depending on number of jackets ordered, as well as any recent

price fluxuations in the garment industry. You can reach Karen at 209-478-1356.

(This is on the last page because I forgot to put it in the main body of the newsletter before I had

everything else entered, and I’m too lazy to re-format the whole document to put this up front where it

should have been in the first place)
