Respectfully,

Nicholas R. JohnsenDirector of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation

I a m a l w a y s humbled during the month of April as we celebrate our military children during “The Month o f t h e M i l i t a r y Child” and honor those who so proud-ly serve all of us here at “The Great Place” as part of our volunteer effort. Our lives are like quilts pieced together as a result of our experiences and our friendships. These two efforts represent significant portions of our individual quilts. Our children provide a significant por-tion of our quilts both in experiences and in terms of our love for them-they truly are our most precious gifts. Our great team at Child, Youth, and School Services will team up with the Directorate of Public Works to present a combined Earth Fest and Month of the Mili-tary Child Fest all at the same location. This partnership represents a great example of teaming for efficiency that offers a unique opportunity to our Fort Hood community-don’t miss out on all of the wonderful Earth Fest and Month of the Military Child Fest activities that will be offered. Our volunteers add to our quilts in that they serve each of us often in unheralded fashion. We take one night a year to honor their efforts for the past 365 days knowing that they have quietly made our quilt richer and fuller. They serve every age category and without them many of our programs would be left dead in the water. Each unit and agen-cy has the opportunity to submit a nomina-tion for selection as the Fort Hood Volunteer of the Year recognition. Review one of the many spring activities discussed within this edition of “Hood Hap-penings” to get out and about-it’s a beautiful time of year!

Gabby Van Trusterword

- DEAR GABBY -Fort Hood Family and MWR's

First Advice Columnist

Dear Gabby,

I recently gave birth to a brand spank-ing new baby boy (Christopher Liam Asiago). Christopher is my first child and as a new moth-er I am fearful that it will be difficult for me to return to my pre-pregnancy weight. I know that I need to exercise, but I find it difficult to stay motivated… Are there any activities on post spe-cifically geared towards becoming more fit, that will also keep me motivated?

Michelle Asiago

Michelle, First and foremost, congratulations on your new little bundle of joy! Second, being fit starts with nutrition and diet, Fort Hood’s Resiliency Campus, Wellness Center (33rd & Old Ironsides, Bldg 12018) provides services in nutrition awareness, health promotion evaluation preg-nancy and post-partum physical training and more. The Wellness Center phone number is 254-287-5586 and it is open Mon- Fri from 7:30 am – 4:30 pm. But, To answer your question more directly, Aerobics is the perfect activity to stay fit and motivated, as it combines rhythmic exer-cises with stretching and strength training. The Aerobics and Skating Center offers a variety of aerobics classes for $25 per month or $3 per class. Feel free to call the Aerobics and Skating Center at 254-287-5623 or stop by Bldg 324, 37th Street– next to the Shopette, Mon– Fri, 5:30 am - 7 pm and Sat, 9 am – 10:30 pm.

Sincerely,Gabby

merson once said, “The first wealth is health.” Who can really argue that point, as

we all know that being fit leads to a healthy lifestyle, which in turn can lead to a more produc-tive and wealthy lifestyle? You tell yourself that the weather outside is becoming much more enjoyable and you do not want to work out in the physical fitness centers on post, but wonder where to work out in the elements. BLORA is the place for you, with several activi-ties for you to share with family and friends throughout the year including, hitting the trails with your mountain bike. Mountain biking is a great way to explore nature and a wonderful form of exercise. Mountain biking requires you to

have great strength, endurance and balance. This extreme sport also provides the rider with an adrenaline rush. Fresh air, a nat-ural high and a great workout, what more could you ask for? Whatever your riding skill level (beginning-to-gnarly) or choice of bike (road-or-moun-tain), BLORA’s bike trails have what you’re looking for. While on the trails, do not forget to take in the scenery and chart your next activity at the lake. The trails have several loops and range from four -14 miles long. The novice trails are from two - six miles long and offer only a few elevation changes, while the intermediate and ad-vanced trails, offer steep drops, changing descents and demand-ing climbs. These trails are only

recommended for experienced rid-ers. We also have a trail to accommo-date the children, it is short, simple and the children will love it. The fee for the mountain bike trails is $3 per person for non DoD ID Card holders and FREE for DoD ID Card holders, daily. BLORA also has mountain bikes available for rent at $10 for two hours or $20 for eight hours. Helmet rental is $1 per helmet. The rentals are available for active duty, military retirees, their Families and DoD employees, 18-years-old and older. Riders must provide their own protective helmet. For more information on the mountain bike trail, call BLORA at 254-287-2523. s

ome out and celebrate Earth Fest and Month of the Military Child Fest with Fort Hood and the surrounding community. Earth Fest is an

annual celebration that promotes environmen-tal awareness and opportunities for individuals to reduce their environmental footprint. Month of the Military Child is celebrated each April, on military installations throughout the world, rec-ognizing military children and youth for their courage, sacrifice and resilience. During this month, we not only want to honor these remark-able young people, but also bring awareness about the challenges they face and the strength and courage they demonstrate every day. Child, Youth and School Services, along with the Directorate of Public Works, encourage all of

C Fort Hood to join with us as we “Celebrate Mili-tary Children: The Strength of Our Future, The Future of Our Environment.” Both events are guaranteed to be a world of fun for children and adults alike. Today’s Military kids live the “green” life in more ways than one and are examples of how strong our future can be. During April, we have the opportunity to thank the leaders of tomor-row and learn how to follow their lead of envi-ronmental preservation, personal flexibility and steadfast courage through transition. Our young-est soldiers were “drafted,” so to speak; born into a lifestyle of challenges to include facing a world of fantastic, but limited natural resources. dad to recycle, our Military kids give us reason to celebrate their unique lives every day. Child, Youth & School Services invites you to celebrate the military child in your life. On April 29, from 3:00 - 9:00pm, the annual Month of the Military Child Fest will take place at the 79th Street gate. This year, military Families will be treated to twice the fun with the Month of the Military Child Fest and DPW’s Earth Fest partner-ing to bring Fort Hood one amazing event. The joint event is free and will feature food, crafts, games, environmental displays, bouncers, climb-ing walls, pony rides, and much more. There will be plenty of live entertainment to include kids and teens from Fort Hood and the surrounding areas. Earth Fest will feature the music of KISS IT

- the Tribute Band, Wild Horses, and Shoemaker High School’s Pandemonium. The experiences military kids have throughout their childhood can foster independence and matu-rity. They have the opportunity to see different parts of the country, meet diverse groups of people, and gain valuable experience about the world in which they live. On April 29, we have the opportunity to celebrate their strength and the environment we will leave to them in one fun-packed festival. Both events; Earth Fest and Month of the Military Child Fest are guaranteed to be a WORLD of fun for children and adults alike. pril is recognized as Na-tional Volunteer Month. During the month of

April, Fort Hood celebrates those individuals who have given their time in support of Soldiers and their Family members. In 2010, more than 4,500 registered vol-unteers contributed more than 86,000 hours supporting Fam-ily readiness groups, working in military Family support agen-cies like the Army Family Team Building program and at the Re-siliency Campus, providing men-torship to school age children, contributing to the success of the American Red Cross, partici-pating in donation and charity drives, and providing invaluable assistance to many other non-profit organizations. The Fort Hood Volunteer of the Year Ceremony will take place on April 20, 2011 and will recognize the accomplishments of approximately 40 outstand-

ing volunteers selected by the various Major Command Groups, school systems and private non-profit organizations. These vol-unteers will represent the thou-sands of volunteers that give their time freely and have made Fort Hood “The Great Place.” No two volunteers contrib-ute their time for exactly the same reasons. When asked the question, “Why do you volun-teer?” some answer because it is the right thing to do. Others say it is a way to support their Soldier, to make a difference in someone’s life, or because volun-teering is an opportunity to give back to a community that has provided so much support to them. April is recognized as the Month of the Volunteer and is an opportunity for the community to say thank you to those who have given their time freely to making Fort Hood a better place. At the Volunteer of the Year Cer-

emony, a frac-tion of Fort

Hood’s remark-able volunteer Army

will be honored for their contributions and will be cel-ebrated for their selfless spirit of giving. Their recognition will symbolize the recognition of thousands of exceptional Fort Hood volunteers. April is acknowledged as National Volunteer Month and pays tribute to those who sacri-fice their time to help others and who make positive contributions to the community every day. The Fort Hood Installation Volunteer of the Year Ceremony represents one day out of 365 that the car-ing spirit and selfless donation of time should be appreciated and celebrated. For more infor-mation on volunteering, contact the Fort Hood Army Community Service, Army Volunteer Corps office at 254-287-8657. s

orking out and staying in shape is im-portant in a healthy lifestyle. Of course we all know it’s not as easy as just going

to the gym once a month and eating the occa-sional healthy meal. In order to stay truly fit, you need to maintain a routine and have dedication to an overall healthy lifestyle, finding a quality physical fitness center is the cornerstone to this healthy lifestyle. Fort Hood has several different physical fit-ness centers across post, one of which is locat-ed on West Fort Hood. Finding the right one for you depends on the activities you are inter-ested in, the type of workout you are looking for, and location. Harvey and Starker Physical Fitness Cen-ters are all open Mondays through Fridays from 5am to 9pm these facilities each feature fantas-tic weight rooms, both free weights and nauti-lus machines are available as well as cardio ma-chines and racquet ball courts to cut down on those calories. Each of these locations also has a sauna which is open right until a half hour prior to the facility close.

The Functional Fitness Center is located at 33rd St. & Old Ironsides. This physical fitness center is for more adventurous personalities. While maintaining a weight room with plenty of free weights and cardio machines, it also is home to a “bouldering” rock and a climbing wall. The bouldering wall is a smaller structure which can be traversed without equipment and is a great starting point for beginners. They also offers a wide variety of elliptical, treadmills, step and spin bikes on the main floor. For those interested in a more out of the box workout consider the Wii fit room and play the Wii interactive to get your heart rate up. They also offer a beginners cross fit course for those interested in a high octane exercise program. In the morning for one hour beginning at 6:30am, the facility offers Pregnan-cy/Post-Partum Yoga, this is a great low im-pact form of exercise to help you and your baby stay healthy. Abrams Physical Fitness Center is a 64,000 square foot fitness facility lo-cated at 62nd St. & Sup-

Life guarding and swim lessons are avail-able, as well as allotted times of the day for lap swim. Abrams also contains four indoor basket-ball courts, four racquetball courts with observa-tion decks, and two outdoor volleyball courts. The West Fort Hood Fitness Center is located on Clark Road building 91068 for those located on the other side of post. Here you can find a climbing wall, fully functional weight room, in-door track, basketball courts and sauna. Also don’t forget to swing on by the newly opened Grey Wolf Gym located at 58th street and Old Ironsides to get you your exercise.

Outdoor

ishermen around Fort Hood find that they have more than ample opportunity to test their skills among the plethora of

lakes and ponds in Central Texas. More impor-tantly, for those that do not want to travel great distances to create memories or strictly fish, Bel-ton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is merely 14 miles northeast of main Fort Hood. BLORA has 12,385 acres of surface area and a maximum depth of 124 feet, for the avid fisherman. There is a May Catfish Contest during the entire month of May this is open to the public. Fishermen may register now through May 31 at the Sportsmen’s Center Pro Shop, located just off of Rod and Gun Club Loop Bldg. 1937, for $2 per angler. Fish any pond or lake on Fort Hood, weigh–in at the Sportmen’s Center, and the heaviest catfish weighed-in for the month of May will be announced June 1 and will win a spiffy rod and reel combo. Before heading out to BLORA or any of the other various ponds on Fort Hood, make sure that you head on over to Sportsmen’s Center (53rd Street and North Avenue, Bldg. 1937) and pick up your fishing licenses. To fish in any of the ponds on Fort Hood, fishermen must pur-chase a Fort Hood Fishing Permit for $15 and be in possession of a Texas state fishing license.

If you would rather fish out at BLORA, you do not need the Fort Hood Fishing Permit but you do need a Texas state fishing license. Texas state fishing licenses are FREE for Active-duty military who are residents (living in the state for at least six months) and $58 for everyone else. In addition to Belton Lake, the Department of Public Works Nature Resource branch in co-ordination with Texas Parks and Wildlife team up to stock the lakes and ponds on Fort Hood. Cer-tain ponds in the winter are stocked with lake trout and in the summer, the stock of choice is catfish. The most heavily stocked lakes are Can-tonments A and B. Cantonment A is located off of Clarke Road and Cantonment B is across from Central Texas College. For more information on fishing requirements, call the Sportsmen’s Cen-ter at 254-532-4552. s

Military SpousesMilitary Spouses

M litary spouses have always esilient, supportive, and loyal. They remain in the shadows, sustaining the home front, while

their service members are off fighting and winning wars to sustain our Country. However, it wasn’t until 1984, that President Ronald Reagan proclaimed a day of recognition for Military spouses. One special day to officially acknowledge the sacrifices they make, the challenges they face, and to publicly say, “Thank you.” No, they don’t take an oath, they don’t wear a uniform, nor do they go to war. What they do is proudly stand tall and strong, providing un-dying support as they remain the consistent, predictable cornerstone of the well-being of our Army Family. Being a Military Spouse, I must admit, it’s tough, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel a sense of pride that’s unparallel to anything else. Often times, friends and Family will comment to me, “I don’t know how you do it.” My comment to them is always, “No, you wouldn’t.” Military spouses are a uniquely diverse group of people. They are compassionate, yet resilient. They are strong and forceful, yet kind; demanding at times, but docile at others. They give so much of themselves to sometime include

forfeiting their own personal and professional ambitions to support their service member, and in turn, our Nation. It’s evident that Military spouses deserve far more than what we can fit into one day. We should always be thankful for them and show our gratitude. When it comes to the stability and balance of our military Families and communities, the value of support the Military spouse provides is priceless. They inspire our Nation with an integral sense of devotion. ove, protection and care are free gifts that we can give to our children. April is Child Abuse Preven-tion Month /Month of the Military Child. Each

year Fort Hood works diligently to celebrate our military children, ensure their safety, reduce the incidents of child abuse/neglect, and promote the safety and well-being of our children. The first Federal Child Protection Legislation for Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment was passed in 1974 because of the need to ensure the safety and welfare of our children. The act was amended many times over the years, but the original legislation remains intact. In 1982, a Proclamation was issued by the President requir-ing all government agencies to observe and designate a week in June as Child Abuse Prevention Week. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it was a year later when April was proclaimed as the first National CAPM. After 1989, the blue ribbon became a symbol to pro-mote the prevention of child abuse and neglect. The Blue Ribbon Campaign expanded throughout the nation as part of the Child Abuse Prevention Month after a grand-mother tied a blue ribbon on her car antenna as a trib-ute to her grandson that died from abuse. Every child is entitled to be loved, cared for, protected, supported, and to have a life free of fear and abuse. During the month of April, Fort Hood invites every individual on the instal-lation and throughout the local communities to become involved in the Installation’s Blue Ribbon Campaign. The

Army Community Service, Family Advocacy Program will provide coordination for the 2011 CAPM Campaign: “Love, Protection, and Care: Gifts That We Can Give To Our Children”. We invite you to become committed to the protection of our children, which will allow them to grow and prosper. Fort Hood agencies are working to provide resources, services, activities, and educational programs for Soldiers and their Families that will provide them with the knowl-edge, resources, and skills to prevent child abuse and ne-glect. Activities will include a CAPM Proclamation signing by the Commanding General, a Shaken Baby Prevention Walk, a Soldier’s Angels Baby Shower, information fair, and other exciting events for parents, children and profes-sionals to attend. It is also important to remind Families of available counseling and treatment services for Fam-ily support. Major General Grimsley has said that it is im-portant for all to be committed to the celebration of kids throughout the community and the prevention of child abuse. Our 2011 Child Abuse Prevention Month/Month of the Military Child Campaign provides us with the op-portunity to reinforce this commitment to our children and military Families. Join us to celebrate our children for their support and sacrifice to the mission. For more information about CAPM/MOMC Campaign services, education and activities, please call 254-286-6774. To learn more about treatment/counseling services, please call 254-288-6474. s

id you know that a child attending full day care might spend 75-85% of their waking weekday hours at a child care center? Why

not send them to the best? Send them to CYSS! At CYSS, we understand that play is a vital part of early childhood education and development. Creativity is the foundation of our curriculum. We encourage children to explore, grow, learn, and play. Through this type of learning, children experience the world around them, developing strategies and habits at this age that will stay with them throughout their lives. Children need knowledgeable, caring, and understanding adults to guide them and participate in their experiences.

Adults, both parents and care providers, perform an important role in a child’s development. Our care providers start out as your neighbors, friends, and Family Readiness Group members. As they progress through stringent training and experience, they become much more. Our care providers become teachers seeking the opportunity to foster their love of play and learning to your children. Visit www.hoodmwr.com for more information on our upcoming Grand Opening. Interested in Montague CDC or need care today? Contact Parent Central Services at 254-287-8029. We look forward to seeing you and your child in one of our centers real soon! s

New brands are being added to include popping seasonal colors as well as “must haves” such as hoop earrings, stretch rings with a vari-ety of bold colors and y-neck necklaces with fringes. The days of the simple electronics counter are no more as the Exchange’s PowerZones continue to evolve. 2011 will see the introduction and expansion of new
