Happy Easter to all! I hope that everyone had a wonderful Spring Break!

I was fortunate enough to spend this past Saturday working alongside many parents,

faculty and students in the Cub Garden. The teamwork, excitement and fellowship

among the parents were proof that our school community really is the greatest.

Please take the opportunity to check out the garden with your children. .

It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is just around the corner but we

still have several PTA projects happening in the next weeks.

Teacher Appreciation will be held in May and the committee is still looking for

volunteers. The committee is looking for prize donations for a special surprise that

has been planned during that week. If you would like to help by donating a prize or

your time please contact Heidi Rowley by email at [email protected].

The Book Fair is also in May so please come out and support the library and your

child’s desire to read. A portion of the proceeds from each book fair goes toward

buying new books for our library.

The 100% membership pizza party in Mrs. Crutti’s class was such a blast!!! I

hope the classes that are close to 100% participation can join in time. Who can say

no to PIZZA? Remember parents that a portion of your PTA dues go toward

making Teacher Appreciation Week and so many other projects a success.

In closing I would to thank Stacey Moore for all of her hard work. She has been a

tremendous help with the website and her amazing organizational skills and positive

attitude will make her a phenomenal president next year. I would like to thank Renee

Verma for being the Cub Garden volunteer extraordinaire. Lastly I would like to

extend a big PTA thanks to the administration. Their support makes so many of our

projects possible and successful.

Thanks for all that you do to support PTA. Your membership helps us bloom!

Missi Alford Richmond,

PTA President

On behalf of the PTA, I would like to thank the parents, teachers and students for coming out on Saturday, March 27 for our first Cub Garden Planting Day! We’re off to a great start and because of you, we were able to plant blueberries around the Rain Garden, install rain water buckets, plant the Cub Garden in the courtyard and prep and plant the planter behind the cafeteria with vegetables and fruit for the cafeteria.

A special thanks to LSU Ag Center for providing tomato plants and blueberries, Ms. Joanna Krumholt for the refreshments and Ms. Knowles for helping the students paint the garden stakes. I’d also like to thank Jeffrey Johnston, a senior at U-High, for helping us design our Cub Garden logo and develop our web page. Please visit the Cub Garden web page on the Lab School web site at http://www.uhigh.lsu.edu/students/cubgarden/index.html.

It was also announced last week that LSU Ag Center and Lab School have partnered to establish a model school garden for the state! I hope our Cub Garden will inspire not only our school community but others around the state to get involved plant a garden. And remember….a school garden can be anything you want it to be – it can be educational, social or nutritional, but it’s also about the art and the beauty. So get involved -- we need everyone’s help to grow our garden and keep it green!

Beginning in February, the fourth graders embarked on another community service

project. Moved by the tragic earthquake in Haiti and the damage it created, the

students became interested in finding a way to help. Olivia Labarre, a student in Mrs.

Moran’s class, suggested students donate items that could be used to create health

kits. Olivia’s idea stemmed from a service project that was taking place at her church

and she brought in the details and the contact information that allowed the teachers

to implement the project at our school.

Students brought in supplies for hundreds of health kits. Items included hand towels,

nail clippers, soap, band-aids, washcloths, and nail files. Once the items were donated,

the students worked in an assembly line to create the kits that were later brought to

Olivia’s church and sent to Haiti. The leftover items were donated as well.

During this project, the students learned many valuable lessons. While they may not

have completely understood the magnitude of the devastation caused by the

earthquake, they learned how and why so much damage was caused. Lessons carried

over into social studies as we studied economics and into foreign language classes as

they learned about geography. What started off as one student’s idea carried over to

the entire grade level and all of our fourth graders learned the most important lesson

of all: empathy and good will towards others.

Student of the Month by Mary Girlinghouse

March Student of the Month

Hunter McGehee is the sixth grade student of the month for March. Hunter has

made great strides in his classes. Hunter is always prepared for class. He works

towards improvement in all his classes. Hunter actively participates, asking

questions and reflecting on his work. Hunter has a good attitude each day in

class. He willingly works with other students and tries to help the others in his

group understand.

John Curtis Creed has been chosen as our seventh grade student of the month.

In addition to being hardworking and respectful, John earns good grades. One

reason for his academic accomplishments is his exemplary work ethic. He is also

one of several students selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders

Conference hosted by the Congressional Leadership Council. We are happy to

select John Curtis as our Student of the Month for March!

Congratulations to Cole Katzenstein for being selected as the eigth grade student

of the month! Cole is an outstanding student, athlete and person. While

juggling soccer and other extra-curriculars, Cole maintains top grades in all of

his classes. He balances friendships and responsibilities well. He is a pleasure to

teach and know.

Zach Aguilar, one of the most thoughtful, considerate young men in ninth grade,

is the March student of the month. Zach has demonstrated his confidence and

knowledge in academic areas, he thinks creatively and critically, and is able to

communicate his understanding cheerfully to his classmates. Zach acts with

integrity and fairness, treats all with respect, and seems to understand the

importance of maintaining a balance of academics and activities to enhance his

high school experience.

The Sophomore Student of the Month is Preston Mall. Preston is a role model to

his fellow classmates in term of maturity and his academics. Preston was on the

University High Basketball team and now is playing Baseball. On top of that, he

still manages to find the time to complete all of studies. Mr. Juves says, “This is

my third year teaching Preston and every year I'm amazed at how he has grown

in his comprehension of Spanish. He is someone who works hard to learn all

that he can. He is dedicated to achieving in life all that he can.” With that being

said, Preston is the model example of the Student of the Month because he is

constantly pushing himself towards greatness and beyond

The Junior selected as student of the month is Katherine Rossi. Katherine is a

hardworking, conscientious student who strives to do her best whether it be in

the academic or athletic realm. She has a personal commitment to service and

acts to make a positive difference in the lives of others. In the classroom she is

reflective student always willing to give 100%. Katherine has a strong work

ethic that is evidenced in her work both in school and on the tennis court. She is

open-minded and caring individual who helps to make our school community

the positive place that it is today.

Whitney Bibbins is the senior student of the month. She is compassionate and

kind to others and shows self-discipline in academics and athletics. She smiles

when she is given a compliment and encourages her peers when they may be

down. She also manages to get her school work done (including IB courses) in

spite of the extracurricular activities that piled up on her during an amazing

basketball season. She is an excellent role model for her peers and the

underclassmen who have kept a watchful eye on her character as well as her

athleticism. She is certainly worthy of the student of the month award!

Hannah Smith, Evan Roider, and Brandon Woolf went to a James

Carville event on Wednesday March 24th at Baton Rouge Community

College. Also present was his wife, Mary Matalin. James Carville and

Mary Matalin have a long rivalry that began during the 1992 Presiden-

tial election. Mary Matalin was George H. W. Bush's campaign strate-

gist and James Carville was Bill Clinton's campaign strategist. Their

animated disagreements, humor, and undying love for each other

made for a speech like no other! Brandon, Hannah, and Evan all

agree that James Carville and Mary Matalin were worth seeing!
