2010-2011 Chamber Program Top Level Sponsors

Focus on Membership

Over the past few years we have had a tremendous response to our FocusOn You! program. Originally, FOY was developed and designed by the Membership Committee to track membership attendance at all Chamber activities and reward you, as an active member, for participating in our numerous events and programs. It was also a way of making sure that no member company was overlooked in getting engaged in the Chamber.

We have had great FOY sponsors who added value to the program with monthly, quarterly and year end grand prizes. All in all, the program has been a success, generated lots of enthusiasm and stayed within the mission of the Chamber. But like many good things, FocusOn You! is coming to an end, at least for this year.

Membership committee members and Chamber staff are revisiting the FOY program to see what elements can be rolled into a new and more dynamic program for members beginning in 2011. In the meantime, FOY is being taken down this month. In its place for this program year, there will still be prizes given at Chamber networking events, thanks to our great sponsors. And we will still be tracking attendance to help us better know what events and programs you, as members, like and don’t like to attend. So keep taking advantage of all of the many resources your Chamber offers and stay in the know by attending Chamber events and programs.

Related to focusing on members, I am pleased to let you know that our Membership Director, Ginger LaMar, is taking on a new role at the Chamber. We have realigned programs and internal oversight, so that Ginger can focus much more on insuring we provide the best programs and services to you, our members. This new Business Services Director position will better utilize Ginger’s expertise and passion for providing a higher level of programming, whether it’s for groups of members or just a one member firm. I know she is looking for your input right now on what we can do to make the Chamber events, programs and workshops more valuable for you and your company. Give her a call or send her an email: [email protected].

Part of the realignment takes Ginger out of selling new memberships and program sponsorships. To meet that need, we are in the process of hiring a person to handle all of the sales functions for the Chamber, as well as the follow-up to make sure that sponsors and new members are receiving exactly what was committed to them. This is another way to make sure that new members get engaged quickly, while long-term members who help support Chamber programs receive due recognition. There are several other changes in staff responsibilities and programs that will be coming down the pike. I will use this column to keep you up to date.

In addition, we are making a number of changes in the Chamber offices. If you have been in lately, we apologize for some of the inconveniences the remodeling is causing, but the end result will be a better building layout for staff and for members. One of the best things, in my mind, is creation of two smaller conference areas. These areas, like our meeting rooms, are available to members. If you ever need a meeting place, give Lisa or Karen a call to book one of these rooms.

As always, your thoughts, suggestions, criticisms and ideas are always appreciated. Feel free to drop them to me at: [email protected]. Our goal is to always serve the membership in the best manner possible. But we can’t do that if we don’t know what you need or want.

Thank you for your membership and support!

Freeman Health System can be traced back to the John W. Freeman residence at 2008 South Sergeant Avenue. In 1889 Freeman established the Freeman Foundry and Machine Works in Joplin. His foundry specialized in manufacturing an array of mining equipment.

In 1886 John married Florence Campbell. They built an 18-room home in 1912 on Sergeant Avenue. Their first child was Orley Freeman. In 1921 Orley became stricken with typhoid fever. Unfortunately Orley did not recover and died in September of that year. After the death of their first born, John and Florence decided to donate their home to establish a hospital.

The Freeman’s home was converted into a hospital after an additional five-story structure was added to the former residence. Following the completion of the new addition, Freeman Hospital was established in 1925 with a staff of 19 nurses and five physicians.

A major expansion project occurred in 1975 when a new two-story, 144-room Freeman Hospital was constructed at 1102 West 32nd Street. The original 20-acre site was donated in December of 1969 by Joplin realtor Myron A. McIntosh. In less than three months over $1 million was raised locally in support of the construction project.

Freeman acquired Neosho’s Sale Memorial Hospital in 1993. The purchase combined the resources of two physician-oriented healthcare institutions in Southwest Missouri. This historic acquisition effectively created the first multi-hospital system in the region.

Freeman and Oak Hill merged in 1995 creating the Freeman Health System. Today the former Oak Hill campus is known as Freeman East.

A 186,000-square-foot, five-story addition was added to the main campus at Freeman West in 2007. One year later the tower was named the Gary & Donna Hall Tower.

Today Freeman Health System is a not-for-profit, community-owned, and locally governed healthcare corporation. Freeman Health System offers full-service healthcare to the region of southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas, northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. The three-hospital, 404-bed health system provides comprehensive services including cancer care, heart care, orthopaedics, neurosurgery and behavioral healthcare. The medical team, which includes 300 physicians representing 60 specialties, uses the latest techniques, best practices, and technologies to give life-saving care close to home. Freeman Hospital has been a faithful member of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce since 1951.

Local Government was on the agenda for the Leadership Joplin Class of 2010. It was quite a busy and informative day starting off with Mike Woolston and City Manager Mark Rohr. Mr. Rohr discussed the Blueprint for the Future which acts as the marching orders that the City uses to reach its vision for the future. You can find the Blueprint for the Future at www.joplinmo.org.

If you were born and raised in this area, then you probably know the history of the old Newman Department Store at 602 South Main Street. What a fabulous job the City of Joplin has done with restoring that glorious building into usable space. If you have not taken the time to view the Thomas Hart Benton mural, “Joplin at the Turn of the Century,” on the main floor of Joplin City Hall, please do so! Make sure you see the clay version of the mural.

Detective Larry Stout from the Joplin Police Department astounded us with methamphetamine horror stories, woes and challenges. Clearly, as a community, we need to take action now to stop this crisis. Officer Dustin Holt from JPD, with his German Shepherd named Ricky, demonstrated the amazing skills of a drug dog.

Other speakers included Ken Copeland, Newton County Sheriff; Lane Roberts, Police Chief, City of Joplin; Beth Peacock from Joplin Parks and Recreation; Robert Lolley with Sunshine Lamp Trolley; Sgt. Sloan Rowland from the Joplin Police Department SWAT Team;

Jake Skouby, Newton County Prosecutor; Darieus Adams, Associate Commissioner Western District; Brian Head, City Attorney; Jim Perkins from the Joplin Fire Department; and Susan Adams, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Elect Board of Directors.

We continued our coaching sessions with Dan Chiodo from Impact Training. We discussed “crucial conversations” and how to have them with others.

Our city and our region have many challenges ahead of us but you should feel confident that our leaders have a vision - and that they want your input! Don’t hesitate to get involved.

We really appreciate our city and county officials and employees taking time out of their busy schedules to meet with our class. It was outstanding!

Q: As a young executive, how do I learn to balance work and life?A: What a great time in your life to be asking this. It’s not only a good question for a young professional, but a more “seasoned” professional should also consider this question throughout their career.

As a young professional, you are likely learning new techniques and strategies that will help you become more effective. These behaviors that help you accomplish things can be very positive. But sometimes a few negative behaviors may creep in. It’s been my experience that the work/life issue is big with executives. Figuring out how you should handle this issue will help you grow in the right direction. If you don’t figure out balance in your work and life, you’re going to miss some great opportunities.

Many people notice that some of their very best ideas occur away from the office. That’s because their mind doesn’t shut off. Enjoying a new place or a new form of recreation helps us to relax and think more clearly.

I like to use a Balance Wheel with the executives I coach. We determine how fulfilled they are in each area of their lives. The Balance Wheel looks like a pie, and each slice represents a section of your life. It’s a way for you to visualize how fulfilled you are. It’s also a great way to help you reach peak performance, as you see some of the areas that are not at the level you desire.

You can also ask a simple question: About what percentage of your time do you spend at work and what percentage do you spend outside work? Hint: If you bring work home to do, those hours should be included with your work time, not your home time.

I get up very early in the morning. When the weather got warmer last week I noticed that there were plenty of birds singing outside my home. I stopped for a few moments and just listened to the melodies. Even though I had a full schedule for the day, I felt it was right to balance it out by appreciating nature.

How’s the balance in your life? Are you having enough fun so that you start your day with a smile and spend it working passionately? If not, it might be the right time to examine your work/life balance.
