Exposition / Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

on First Friday after the 8:00 AM Mass for 1 hour.

St. Mary Star of the Sea Welcomes You. This weekend we celebrate the 18th Sunday in

Ordinary Time. Mass readings begin on page 215.

O God, come to my assistance; O Lord, make haste to help me! You are my rescuer, my help; O

Lord, do not delay.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK: Blessed Stanley Francis Rother (1935-1981)

If his name doesn’t sound familiar it is because it has-n’t been splashed across the headlines. But this priest born in the American heartland and raised on a farm in Oklahoma recently earned the distinction to be the first American martyr to be beatified by the Church this past fall by Pope Francis. In a world that idolizes MVPs, lauds superheroes and glorifies celebrities, to be described as ‘ordinary’

could be taken as an insult. Yet one of the most in-spiring things about Father Stanley Rother, the farm boy from Oklahoma, is precisely how ordinary he was. It is in this ordinary life ‘on the farm’ that Stanley first experienced a personal encounter with the Good Shep-herd, here he learned what it meant to live as a disciple of Jesus. This is where he learned to be a man of pray-er, a hands on servant with a resolute desire to become a priest. Five years after his ordination, at age 33, he volun-teered for his diocese’s mission in Guatemala. In 1974 Father Rother celebrated 649 baptisms, 85 weddings, and 150 First Communions. By 1980 his priestly and sacramental duties now included heartbreaking tasks such as walking the roads searching for the bodies of parishioners who had been killed and caring for the many widows and orphans of his parish. In 1980 Father Rother wrote to his bishop in Oklaho-ma, “The country here is in rebellion, and the govern-ment is taking it out on the Church. I simply continue to do what I can do, continue my ministry, keep my head down, and preach the Gospel of love and nonvio-lence. In January of 1981, Father Rother’s name ap-peared on a government ‘death list’, he agreed to leave the country and so returned to Oklahoma. He could not stand to be so far away from his parish and told his family and friends, ‘My people need me.’ A shepherd cannot run from his flock.” He returned in time for Holy Week and Easter. On July 28 masked men slipped into the parish rectory and killed him on the spot. Saints are ordinary people like Fr. Rother, who remind us that we are all called to holiness. We need that

faith witness. We draw strength from those who, like Stanley Rother, live faithful and wholeheartedly their very ordinary lives. They challenge us to believe that we can, too. This is the message of Good News that we all need to hear.

The second collection this weekend is for the Pe-

ter’s Pence Collection. Thank you for your contin-uing generosity!

“Whatever you do for the least of my people you do

for me.” Matthew 25:40

office beforehand to let us know that you would like to bring up the offertory.

SPONSORS AND GODPARENTS

The catechism states that the godfather, godmother or spon-sor must be “firm a believer” (No. 1255). The true intent is that the godparent or sponsor be an active, practicing Cath-olic, who treasures the Catholic faith, provides good exam-

ple and would joyfully and eagerly be a partner with the parents in raising the child in the faith. The godparent’s

faith need not be perfect or mature, but it must be valid and active. He/she is fully initiated, attends Mass regularly,

and if married, is validly married in the church.
