PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Welcome everyone to the TFDA April Festival for 2018. I have much pleasure in welcoming our adjudicators for the

weekend, Eliana Taylor and Brook Roydhouse, I’m sure you will both enjoy your time in the beautiful Taranaki, and

can promise some very enjoyable dancing.

We are running our Special TFDA Award at these competitions with the genre being Jazz. The classes for this award

will be running on Saturday evening, with presentation at the end of the session. Good luck to all the girls who have

entered for this Award.

Many thanks to our lovely committee members who help put these competitions together, and a big thank you to

Sarah Rowson, Abbey Cleaver, Sam Forrester, Fleur Coombe and Melissa Neale for coming on board this year. Our

committee has really grown and we appreciate you taking the time out of your busy lives to join us. It’s not all serious

business, we do have lots of laughs and social outings, so please consider if this is something for you in the future.

Good luck to all the dancers this weekend, especially our new dancers coming out for the first time, go out and do

your best, but remember to have fun too, and don’t forget to smile.

WELCOME TO OUR ADJUDICATORS:

Eliana Taylor

Born and raised in Wellington, Eliana completed her 3rd year of fulltime training in 2013 with a bachelor in applied arts, performing arts majoring in commercial dance from the Whitireia Performance Centre. Eliana began dancing from the age of eighteen months taking up ballet, tap and jazz under her mother and later moved to Chilton Dance Centre and Jeanette Mullins school of dance where along with the above she studied contemporary and musical theatre. At the Whitireia Performance Centre Eliana also added hip hop, Latin and chorus heel work along with singing and circus aerials to her repertoire. She has a great passion for dance and performance and this is reflected in her stage presence. Eliana has had many amazing opportunities through dance and was honoured with the opportunity to be a cast dancer in Wellington’s production of Phantom of the Opera in 2013. Since 2013 Eliana has gone on to do a post graduate diploma of teaching and is currently teaching at St Brendan’s school in Heretaunga. Through her teaching she has choreographed dancesplash items and is teaching dance to her student through an arts rotation each week. Eliana is also involved with teaching and choreographing for competition students in the Wellington area.

Brooke Roydhouse Brooke is a professional dancer who has spent the last 10 years performing in the United States, Europe, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Brooke’s career begun with Maureen Ax in Palmerston North, from 18 she then crafted her dance career in Australia. Starting her training at The Edge performers school & agency in Melbourne, then later at Patrick Studios Australia. Her first commercial dance contract was with the reputable cruise company P&O (Australia) as a Singer/Dancer and as a Dancer on Princess Cruises (USA), where she was able to dance and travel the world at the same time. She has worked extensively in the commercial dance scene in Australia including a 15,000-seated Countdown Arena Spectacular, the Hairspray movie premiere and was in the top 100 in Australia’s first season of 'So You Think You Can Dance’. Brooke performed in ‘Carnival Choreographers Ball’ on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles with SourceDance and also spent six months in Malaysia performing at Resort World Genting's stage spectacular and was promoted to Dance Captain during this contract. She was the founding Director and Choreographer of a boutique entertainment company in Melbourne, which provided commercial dancers to corporate and large scale events and has worked in a variety of promotional roles throughout Australia. She has had a taste of the film and TV industry, appearing in Home & Away, Neighbours, Sunday Night, Power games, Rake & Wonderland. Brooke has performed in New Zealand-based musicals including ‘Chicago’, ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and Australian-based musicals – Jerry Herman’s ‘Milk & Honey’ and in Hugh Jackman's ‘The Boy from Oz’ at the Rod Laver Arena. As well as performing, Brooke is an accomplished dance teacher and Director of Ignite Dance Hub. She currently freelances as a dance tutor/ examiner/ adjudicator in the New Zealand dance scene. She has worked with Whitireia, National Youth Drama School, Team leader for World Class Dance Tours, UCOL Performing Arts & DanceNZmade.

RULES AND GENERAL CONDITIONS: MUSIC:

Every care will be taken when playing music. No responsibility taken for poor quality recordings or fading of music.

Only one track per CD. PLEASE NOTE THAT TAPES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

FAILURE TO FINISH A DANCE:

If a competitor leaves the stage for any reason during a dance, they will not be allowed to commence that dance

again. If the stage is left, the competitor will only be eligible for a participation ribbon unless due to a music

malfunction.

PROMPTING:

NO prompting of any kind may be given during a performance. We advise that there should only be the next two

competitors waiting in the stage wings.

BACKSTAGE:

Competitors must perform in the order as shown in the programme. Competitors must check in and hand in their

music 30 minutes before the estimated start of their class. Competitors will not be permitted to dance if the class

has already started and you have not handed in your music (this is at the discretion of the TFDA Committee).

During Championship classes parents are not permitted to be backstage without permission from the Secretary’s

Table. Please note that these rules will be strictly adhered to.

VIDEOING:

Videoing of your own child is permitted only if prior permission is granted by the Secretary’s table.

AWARDS:

The decision of the Adjudicator is final.

EXECUTIVE POWERS:

The Executive Committee reserves the sole right of interpreting and applying the conditions, and deciding any

matters arising out of these conditions. The Executive reserves the right to change the programme in any way

whatsoever. Please note; The Committee reserves the right to combine, divide or delete classes if entries so

warrant. If a class is split, the trophy/cup will be awarded to the competitor with the highest mark.

COMPLAINTS:

Any complaints must be in writing and will be discussed within Committee.

COMPETITORS:

Competitors compete at their own risk.

AGE LIMITS:

A competitor’s age shall be reckoned as at the advertised date of the first date of the competition. Any competitor

may be called upon to produce a birth certificate or other evidence of age.

TIME LIMITS:

Solo events: Under 12 years 3 minutes

12 years & over 4 minutes

Duos & Trios 4 minutes

Troupes & Groups 10 minutes (state time on entry form)

REPETITION OF A DANCE:

No dance in its entirety can be repeated with the exception of Championship Classes, The Fran Gray Special Award

and Restricted Classes.

ADJUDICATORS:

No competitor, teacher, parent or other interested party (other than Committee Members) shall communicate with

the Adjudicator on the subject of the competition prior to or during the competition. To do so automatically means

disqualification of the competitor. No competitor who has been tutored and/or coached by the Adjudicator of that

section during the two years preceding the competitions will be allowed to compete in that section. The Committee

reserves the right to appoint additional or substitute Adjudicators if necessary.

ELIGIBILITY OF ENTRANTS:

These competitions are for amateurs only. AMATEUR shall mean one whose income does not exceed $1,500.00

per annum for the exercise of his/her talents in the section in which he/she may compete, excluding scholarships

won at dancing competitions. PROTESTS:

Competitors or any other person wishing to enter a protest must lodge the same in writing to the Secretary together

with the sum of $5.00. Upon investigation by the Committee, should the protest be deemed frivolous or unfounded,

the deposit shall be forfeited. No protest shall be entertained unless made within 30 MINUTES after the

Adjudicators award is announced. The decision of the Committee (or Executive) shall be final. ALL TROPHIES MUST BE RETURNED TO THE STEWARDS BY THE DATE OF CLOSING OF ENTRIES

All cups and trophies remain the property of the TFDA and the engraving of the cups & trophies remains the

responsibility of the competitor. These can never be won outright.

Cups and trophies may be held until the following year, and MUST be returned to the stewards by the date of closing

of entries. If not, the committee reserve the right to return your entry. We would expect that all trophies are

returned both engraved and polished. CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Championship Tap Dance cannot be a straight Tango or Waltz Tap, but these rhythms can be included.

To compete in their respective sections, a competitor MUST HAVE WON A FIRST PLACE in his/her own age group

in a tap, ballet, modern jazz solo (not hip hop) or a first place in a RESTRICTED CHAMPIONSHIP. Competitors

must be able to show proof of obtaining a first place if required to do so. These Championship classes are only

open to competitors who ALSO compete in their own age group solo class. There will be no equal placings in

Presentation or Championship classes.

To be eligible to compete in a RESTRICTED CHAMPIONSHIP, a competitor MUST have won a Restricted Tap,

Ballet, Modern/Jazz (not hip hop) solo class but NOT AN OPEN CLASS.

In these Championship classes, dances may be repeated. During the Championships, a competitor who does not

complete his/her dance SHALL NOT BE ENTITLED TO RECOMMENCE unless due to a music malfunction.

Competitors in Championship classes MUST check in prior to the commencement of the class and WILL NOT under

any circumstances be permitted to dance out of order. THESE CLASSES WILL NOT BE SPLIT. PARENTS/TEACHERS:

Are not permitted backstage during Championship classes unless a request has been made to the Committee prior

to the commencement of the class.

Restricted & Impromptus Ribbons for VHC, HC and C placings

Championship classes : Sashes for 1st placings

Rosettes for 2nd and 3rd placings

aggregate points over Contemporary, Lyrical and Jazz and will be required for a special presentation on Saturday

Evening.
