What are acid rain?

Acid rain is rain or precipitation that is unusually acidic. It`s caused by human emissions of sulfur and nitrogen, such as electricity generation and motor vehicles, to the atmosphere.

Effects of acid rain• Acid rain causes acidification of lakes,

rivers and streams;

• Damage trees at high elevations;

• Damage buildings, sculptures and statues;

• Can also harm people indirectly, like when we eat fish caught in affected lakes or rivers;

Areas affected• Several places around the world, like Europe,

the northeaster section of the United States and the southeaster section of Canada.

Solutions• Many governments have introduced laws

to reduce these emissions;

• We can too use fuels that burn more cleanly;

• Fitting devices such a catalytic converter into car exhaust pipes to minimize the emissions.

Hurricanes

What are?

• A hurricane is born when a tropical storm's constant wind speed reaches 74 miles per hour or greater.

• There are five categories of hurricane.

What happens?

• The winds of a hurricane cover hundreds of miles and spiral counterclockwise at a speed of 75 miles per hour and up.

• Storm surge is the mound of ocean water up to 20 feet high that can come ashore with a hurricane.
