news from the sunAdam Dix, Martin Fletcher Systems House Peter Macdonald, Charlie Tweed

29 mar - 11 may

thirty years ago, a short story called news from the sun appeared in Jg Ballard’s collection Myths of the near future. like much of his fiction, this tale of social and temporal entropy is peppered with references to solar collectors, aeroplanes and relics of a defunct space programme. the story is pervaded both by a sense of ‘nostalgia for the future’ (as one character describes it) and by the relentless and all consuming glare of the sun.

this exhibition is typified by references to the physical structures of communication technology, such as satellite dishes, pylons and antennae. in a variety of ways, each of the artists display an interest in subverted or obsolete modernity, referencing technology, architecture and design that offers optimistic promises of a utopian future. these points of reference contrast with an intensive level of handcrafted process utilised by each in the creation of their work.

capturing something of Ballard’s uncanny prescience in the environmental and social effects of ‘space-age’ technology, there is a tangible sense of how these possible futures inevitably fail to unfold as predicted, tempered by the darker, alternatives that could, and have arrived instead.

LOW PROFILE

24 may – 6 Jul

an exhibition of recent works by collaborative duo loW Profile spanning live performance, video, installation and artists’ publication.

their work investigates ideas around survival, preparedness and perseverance, testing their own commitment to keeping going and not giving up. drawing on a range of cultural reference points they address themes of everyday survival with humour, absurdity and a light touch, actively calling into question notions of expertise, usefulness and redundancy.

By setting up situations that are inviting and engaging, loW Profile’s idiosyncratic embrace of the impossible, the endless and the obsessive, magnifies and puts on show our experiences of everyday life.

as part of the exhibition, loW Profile will undertake a 12 hour durational performance in which they attempt to read, learn from and test each other on the advice offered in the Book of survival (by anthony greenbank), a 1960s publication that promises to leave its readers mentally equipped to ‘survive’ anything.
