Overview of Hiroshima University Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences—Health Sciences Major (Doctoral Course)
1 Goals
The recent economic growth in Japan has been accompanied by developments in scientific technology. This is a period in
which the fields of health science and medicine have become increasingly specialized and in which researchers require
advanced specialist knowledge and skills in a range of fields. In particular, the rapid arrival of an aging society together with a
low birth rate has led to changes in the proportions of diseases, resulting into complex illnesses and their treatment becoming
a major social issue.
With this in mind, two courses below were established with the following goals: Division of Nursing Science: For
development of internationally-minded nursing science researchers and educators capable of performing research as well as
developing new theories and practical methods in the field of nursing science.
Division of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Sciences : For development of educators with advanced
specialist knowledge and outstanding research skills that transcend the framework of traditional physical therapy and
occupational therapy, as well as research and development professionals for establishing academic systems.
2 Overview of Health Sciences Major
In this program, the two abovementioned divisions function as an organic whole. It aims to enable students to master a
broad range of fundamental knowledge and advanced specialist knowledge in their respective fields, and to develop
practitioners who can function in health and medical settings and as leaders at health and medical facilities, as well as
educators and researchers.
3 Curriculum
(1) Characteristics
○ For obtaining a doctoral degree in this program, students are required to possess the appropriate knowledge and
skills for continuing research independently in the future in their chosen field. In order to realize this, students are
provided with the necessary instruction in an efficient manner.
○ Subjects comprise Advanced Lectures and Advanced Seminars, in which students
acquire advanced expertise regarding individual research topics, and Advanced Research, in which students are
provided with tailor-made guidance for conducting research and composing a thesis to help prepare them for their
final doctoral dissertation.
○ The student’s main faculty advisor along with multiple co-advisors provide guidance in students’ researches.
○ Students are guided with a standardized schedule incorporating these processes in order to help them to complete the
course within the prescribed timeframe (standard number of years required for graduation: three).
○ In order to ensure that students can complete their dissertations smoothly, preliminary review boards will be set up
within the program to monitor and guide students at every stage of the course, from the formation of research topics,
to the composition of research plans, to the final completion of the dissertation.
(2) Graduation Requirements
○ In principle, students who have been enrolled at the university for at least three years, obtained the stipulated number
of credits (12 credits or above as shown below), and undertaken the requisite guided research must submit a doctoral
6
dissertation while they are enrolled at the university and pass their dissertation screening and final examinations.
Note that for those students deemed to have made excellent research achievements at a graduate school faculty
meeting, a minimum period of one year of enrollment (for those who have completed the Master’s Course in under
two years while enrolled at the university, a period of three years including this period) would be satisfactory
○ Methods of obtaining credits
・Common subjects (compulsory): 2 credits
・Lectures given by the student’s main faculty advisor (Advanced Lecture)
(compulsory): 2 credits
・Seminars delivered by the student’s main faculty advisor (Advanced Seminar)
(compulsory): 2 credits
・Advanced Research(Advanced Research)
(compulsory): 4 credits
・Lectures other than those given by the student’s main faculty advisor or common subjects (elective): 2 credits or more
(3) Degrees
Those who successfully complete this course will be conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Science or Doctor
of Philosophy in Nursing degree as stipulated in the Rules for Degrees (Ordinance of the Ministry of Education No. 9,
1953). Note that only those who have undertaken Advanced Research under a teacher in possession of a nursing license
will be conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree.
4 Future Careers following Graduation
Students from this course further proceed to work in a number of professions, including professors and researchers in the
field of nursing science at universities, educators in physical therapy and occupational therapy, managers and instructors at
health and medical institutes, researchers at research institutes, and experts at international organizations such as the WHO
(World Health Organization) and the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).
