Safety Device for Walking on Icy Pavements

RUBE GOLDBERG

COMPETITION

When you slip on ice, your foot kicks paddle (A), lowering finger (B), snapping turtle (C) extends neck to bite finger, opening ice tongs (D) and dropping pillow (E), thus allowing you to fall on something soft. Reuben Garret L. Goldberg (July 4, 1883 - December 7, 1970) was an American cartoonist. He graduated from University of California Berkeley and went to work as an engineer with the City of San Francisco Water and Sewers Department. After six months he quit his job and became a cartoonist. A founding member of the National Cartoonist Society, a political cartoonist and a Pulitzer Prize winner, Rube was a beloved national figure as well as an often-quoted radio and television personality during his sixty-year professional career. Rube Goldberg earned lasting fame for his Rube Goldberg machines, complex devices that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways. Through his "INVENTIONS", Rube Goldberg discovered difficult ways to achieve easy results. His cartoons were, as he said, symbols of man's capacity for exerting maximum effort to accomplish minimal results. Rube believed that there were two ways to do things: the simple way and the hard way, and that a surprisingly number of people preferred doing things the hard way.
