Stationnement de Montréal created the innovative Public Bike System™ (PBS),

which it will also manage. The system includes bikes, technical platforms, bike

docks, pay stations and proprietary software that runs it all. The company has a

long history of developing successful public installation projects. In 2007, it was

honored with the International Parking Institute’s Award of Merit in the Innovation

in a parking operation category for a “Pay and Go” parking system.

The PBS was created to offer an attractive and easy-to-use option for those

seeking alternative urban transportation that has less impact on the environment

than traditional fuel-powered vehicles. The harmonious integration of design,

innovation and technology into all of its components is what makes the PBSsuch a breakthrough in concept and execution.

Innovation is another hallmark of the PBS. One of the priorities was to create a

system that could be rapidly deployed and redeployed, avoiding the heavy

infrastructure that characterizes most public bicycle networks currently in use.

All PBS components are modular, and linked to “Drop and go” technical

platforms. Which means that stations can be created, reconfigured or relocated

in a matter of minutes, thanks to real-time system management. As can all thecomponents -- bikes, bike docks and pay stations.

Any public system using bikes will have a beneficial effect on the environment, to

the extent that car usage is replaced by bicycles. But the PBS has gone much

further. The entire system is solar-powered, with no emissions or unclean sources

of energy. And RFID wireless communication is used, eliminating undesirable

environmental effects resulting from excavations as well as those associated with

the manufacture of massive amounts of communication cables.
