BLUE AND RED GROUP

We hope that you have all enjoyed the Easter break and the rest of the holidays. We hope the children have enjoyed sharing their portfolios with their families. We look forward to seeing any pages added by the children over the break and to parents’ comments on term one. A reminder that as the portfolios form part of the children’s individual records they will need to be returned on the children’s first session back at kinder. It was a very busy end to term one. Many activities involving our community were part of the program and the children have learnt many life skills throughout these programs. In term one the children settled well. They became engaged in the program and continued to develop their sense of belonging to our Kinder community. Many were tired especially in the hot weather and on the longer days. We are sure they will have benefited from the break and time with their families. The Healthy Bite Dental Program which is part of Nillumbik Community Health visited our kinder. During these sessions the children were taught all about healthy eating and good oral hygiene. They were shown in the comfort of the kinder environment what to expect when visiting the dentist. For some this was something new to them and for others it was an experience they were already familiar with. The response from the children and families was great and we had many children have a dental screen on this visit. The following week we had the Responsible Pet Program. This is a very valuable program run by the state government. It has just been updated and we believe the changes are all positive. The learning for the children has been enhanced. This program teaches the children in an age appropriate way with visual pictures, songs and discussions about how to keep safe around dogs in the home and in the community. The program also involved a parent information session and both red and blue group had families attend these sessions. We have followed up from these sessions with a story, activities, songs and dances that revisit the skills learnt during the session. These songs will form an ongoing part of our program throughout the year at kinder. We believe this program is especially important for our children as we have a path behind our kinder that is frequently used by dogs that are not always safely on a leash. When we go out into the community we use the path and often meet dogs not on leashes. To finish the end of term the children were engaged in a variety of experiences to celebrate Easter. They made Easter Bonnets in Blue Group and Bunny ears in Red Group. Cutting was the main skills the children have been practicing as well as developing creativity and their abilities to focus on completing the set task. The children have also taken part in songs, dance and stories relating to Easter. On the last day the children in Blue Group paraded their bonnets for the families. Both groups had a surprise visit from the Easter bunny who left an Easter surprise for every child. To begin Term Two the changes in the weather and the arrival of the season of autumn will be a focus. Autumn toned colours will be introduced at the easel and other Autumn related activities provided. They will also learn about the seasons through songs and stories and our Today Chart which will be introduced to the groups. The children will also learn about the process of borrowing at our kinder library. They will have the opportunity to borrow a book from Kinder to take home for a week and share with their families. The children will require a material library bag to protect the books as they carry them between Kinder and home. On Thursday the 28th of April we have an incursion from Yarn Strong Sistas for both groups. This program will give the children an insight into indigenous culture. It will be funded by a $300 grant that we applied for and received as well as some of the children’s incursion/excursion funds for the year. If we get indigenous culture funding this year some of this money will go toward the expense rather than the incursion/excursion funds. We have planned our excursions to the DV library. The children will walk to the library along the walking path through the tunnel at Plenty River Drive and over the footbridge across the freeway. The children will share in story time and be familiarized with the borrowing process and the functions of the library. This year we were invited to visit the library at 11.00am on Wednesday 25th May to join in a national story reading time. Red Group was in session at this time so they will be visiting then. Blue Groups excursion will be on Thursday 26th May 1.45pm. We will need parent helpers for these sessions and both excursions will be weather permitting. Detailed forms and requests for permission will go home early in the term to families.

APOLLO PARKWAYS PRE-SCHOOL

Prior to going on the excursion we will be revisiting our procedures for safety around dogs by playing the songs at group times and discussing the steps the children need to follow when a dog is off a lead. We are also completing some activities relating to safety and holding hands so the children are familiar with safety prior to our walk to the library. We also have arranged for library staff to visit our groups at Kinder. Malise will visit Red Group on Wednesday 4th May at 1.00pm and Doris will visit Blue Group on Thursday 5th May at 2pm. As well as our planned library visit both groups will be introducing favourite stories to the group. Each child will have the opportunity to bring in a favourite story to share. This encourages the children’s interest in literacy as well as expanding their access to a variety of books throughout the term. A roster will be placed out so we can plan for each child to have a turn. With experiences like these the children also develop a sense of belonging to the group and their listening and speaking skills are further enhanced. We have three work experience students from local secondary schools attending our Kinder next term for a week each. Piper will be commencing on Monday 16th May and Madison and Annalyse on Monday 6th June. This term Tamara will also be taking long service leave from the 9th until the 20th of May. During this time Louise Davis will be teaching Blue Group with Sharyn. Louise is already very familiar with the preschool and I’m sure the children will adapt well to this change. Please remember sunhats are still required until the 29th of April. Warm coats and beanies will also be required this term as the weather becomes cooler and outdoor play will continue to be an important part of our daily program. We are looking forward to a busy and productive term two with lots of enjoyable times and learning. Thank you Tamara, Helen, Janine, Sharyn, Jo and Maggie

YELLOW GROUP

Welcome to Term Two. We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break with your families? Yellow Group children have all returned happy and ready to begin another term of Three Year Old program. Yellow Group children were extremely busy at the end of Term One. They participated in some activities for Easter. Egg shapes were available at the pasting and easel for the children to use. Pastel colours and foil were used at the pasting table for the children to decorate their eggs. The children also spent time using tongs to pick up felt eggs and chickens, sorting and placing them into different baskets. Easter Bunny visited the children, leaving a basket of yummy chocolate eggs for each child in Yellow Group.

Yellow Group children have practised our Emergency Evacuation Procedure. The children were explained what to do when they heard the whistle blown. When it was time, the children all assembled quickly at our evacuation point. They all did extremely well with this task. A huge THANK YOU to all our parent helpers last term with our fruit duty and washing roster. The children were all so excited to have you during our session. We look forward to another term with your assistance. Yellow Group have returned to Term Two with enthusiasm and smiles. We have celebrated a few birthdays so far this year. Yellow Group children decorate our playdough cake with special items of their choice, many chosing fairies, cars, dinosaurs and animals to place on it. We have birthday hats that the children may like to wear and they are given a special birthday sticker to wear. A birthday page is placed in each child’s portfolio. Boris our Travelling Bear has begun having sleepovers at the children’s houses. Boris is a very special bear that belongs to Kinder. He travels to each of Yellow Group’s houses until the next session. A diary accompanies Boris that the children may like to draw, place photos or have written words about Boris’ stay. Each session the children stand up in front of the entire group and tell us about their time with Boris.

APOLLO PARKWAYS PRE-SCHOOL

We have begun using scissors with the children. They are very keen to cut. We used playdough scissors last term and have now progressed to using ‘real’ scissors to cut paper. The use of the recycle bin has been added to this experience, which the children have used well. Autumn colours are available at the collage table for Yellow Group to paste with. Red, yellow, brown and dark green crepe paper, patty pans and card are available for the children to paste onto thick card. Mother’s Day preparations have begun with the children starting to make their gifts for their Mums. Card, wrapping paper and gift making will continue over the next few weeks. Monday 9th May from 10am. During this time Yellow Group will showcase some of the songs they have learnt so far, look through their portfolios and give their gifts they’ve made to their Mums. We look forward to another terrific Term with Yellow Group continuing to learn and grow as individuals. Yellow team, Jo and Tracy.
