This year’s theme is particularly important as it highlights our nation’s growing respect and understanding of the relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples and the unique role we all play in building a stronger and more creative nation. On Wednesday, Students rotated to 11 different activities with a focus on learning from our local people about Guildford and the traditional custodians of this land, the Darug People. In my conversations with students they clearly enjoyed the activities, having the opportunity to listen to stories of the past, of changes to Guildford PS over the past 100 years, of Aboriginal legends (stories), poetry, to making a friendship bracelet and hearing from our student leaders of the meaning behind the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Students had the chance to play traditional games which have been around for thousands of years and to visit our temporary museum filled with classroom resources from the past. I congratulate students for their enthusiastic efforts during Reconciliation Week activities and also want to thank the Aboriginal Education committee for directing this event under the leadership of Miss Corso. A special thank you to our volunteers on the day: Mr Kevin Thompson, Mrs Lyn Coaldrake, Mr Ray Camillieri and Mrs Deb Ferguson. An enormous thank you to our P&C leadership group who organized the friendship bracelet station. STUDENT ACHIEvEmENT Good luck to our senior dance group who audition next week for OUR SPECTACULAR. DEAR PARENTS AND CARERS, RECONCILIATION WEEk WRAP-UP This week students and staff recognised National Reconciliation Week in the theme of ‘Let’s take the next steps’. This year’s theme is particularly important as it highlights our nation’s growing respect and understanding of the relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples and the unique role we all play in building a stronger and more creative nation. filled with classroom resources from the past.

I congratulate students for their enthusiastic efforts during Reconciliation Week activities and also want to thank the Aboriginal Education committee for

directing this event under the leadership of Miss Corso. A special thank you to our volunteers on the day: Mr Kevin Thompson, Mrs Lyn Coaldrake, Mr Ray Camillieri and Mrs

Deb Ferguson. An enormous thank you to our P&C leadership group who organized the friendship bracelet station.

STAFF LEARNING Recently teachers from 5 other schools worked on site with our staff in discussing ‘Collaboration, creative and critical thinking’ and what this looks like when students are doing it. Feedback and recommendations were provided by the group of teachers which has provided our leadership team with ideas and future directions to further develop creative and critical thinking skills. I extend a BIG thank you to GPS teachers for your assistance in opening up classrooms for the visitors to observe. I encourage you to watch the short youtube clip which is an interview with Tony Wagner about future learning. Click below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYS5_hW4bVY&feature+youtu.be

Also congratulations to Miss Bryceland who this week presented at the STEMaker17 innovation conference in the City. Miss Bryceland discussed the journey of Project Based Learning and other aspects of innovative learning from GPS.

STAFF DEvELOPmENT DAyS Just a reminder the last two days of the school year, Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 December, are for staff development days. Guildford Public School’s Science Week Guildford Public School had Science Week in week 4. We had a Surfing Scientist come in and show us some of his mad skills! His name was Ruben the Surfing Scientist. Ruben had his own TV show; it was called The Surfing Scientist. We also learnt that liquid nitrogen is dangerous if you drink it while there's still steam, you will get sick and your stomach will start getting bigger and bigger, after a few minutes it will tear your stomach apart.

Stage 2 did a little experiment about the Milk Rainbow. We first started off with milk, then we put some food colouring on the sides of the plate, after we put some liquid soap (used for dishes) on a cotton tip and placed it in the middle of the plate. The liquid soap started to push the food colouring around the plate, and the liquid soap started to collect some of the food colouring and let it out, after a few minutes it turned into a rainbow. It was a fun experiment for stage 2.

6AK and 6K came together and did a science experiment during Science Week which included making a small tubed container pop into the air with the help of a fizzle tablet and water. This experiment was titled Pop Rockets. We completed the experiment in groups, with 3 or 4 other people. Firstly, we got a sheet and together with our group we had to predict what would happen. We then divided into two groups one that conducted the experiment with one teaspoon of water and the other with two teaspoon of water. Excitement was in the air, smiles were on faces and hopes were in the hearts as we went outside and tested which one would “pop” higher into the air. It was great that most of them worked but some unfortunately didn't. After this fun experiment we went inside and recorded what we observed. We concluded the more water added the higher the container travelled into the air.

The SRC had an important conversation with their class about whether or not they should sell these eye patches on Pirate Day for 50c or give them away for free. Their discussions led to a school wide decision that the SRC should sell the eye patches for 50c in order to raise more money for childhood cancer research. Guildford Public School has a heart of gold! The SRC cannot wait to see you all dressed up as pirates on the 15th of June!

This year, Year 6 students have been running a whole school Peer Support Program which runs for 30 minutes each week. “BEING FRIENDLY’ The program began in Week 3. Each week, two Peer Leaders will facilitate a small group of younger students, who work together through a number of structured activities. Students will explore the concept of friendship, build relationships and develop skills in empathy and critical thinking. In preparation for the program, Year 6 students attended Guildford Leagues Club, over two days. They received information and training on how to effectively lead the program and support younger student’s in developing the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to maintain positive relationships with others. In Week 4 students had an opportunity to get to know everyone in their group and agree on how they will work together and interact cooperatively with others. Also, students began to think about the meaning of friendship. “TYPES OF FRIENDS” In Week 5, the focus is on exploring the skills of friendship, particularly cooperating and being an active listener. Students will look at qualities their friends may have and develop the understanding that we choose friends based on the qualities we admire in them. “BEING SUPPORTIVE” During last week’s session of Peer Support, students learnt about different types of friends. Students were encouraged to form friendships with different people relating to their interests and qualities. They learnt that their friends can fall into the categories of ‘best friends’, ‘friends’ and ‘people we know’ and discussed how friendships can change over time for various reasons. This week in the Peer Support session, children will be focusing on the importance of support networks in providing support to them if the need arises. Miss Karamaneas and Miss Ali Khan

The chess tournament on Wednesday 31 May was held at Canley Vale Public School. 9 students from Year 3-6 represented our school in competitive games against students from other Primary Schools. We travelled on the train to the other school and we enjoyed using the Opal cards. We like playing chess because it's fun, it's challenging, you don't get bored and you get to verse other people. When you have to knock out different pieces it is quite exciting. You have to think a lot and it is hard sometimes. We tried our best every time we played a new game. Over 6 rounds we had 21 wins and 8 draws. It's not about winning but trying your best and having fun. There were so many students and chess boards! This is a collaborative reflection about our day out at the chess tournament. 2017 Chess Club

Having an Art Club is a great way for students to be involved in art throughout the year. Several students across Years K-6 have been attending Art Club where it gives them more opportunities and freedom to learn and try new things. We have been working with clay and using different techniques to create pinch pot animals and clay candle holders. It is great fun and the students enjoy it.

We are very happy to have the chance to work with students who are passionate about art and love creating.
