To see a smiling, joyful Jeffrey (4 months) at his pediatric appoint- ment at Arlington Pediatric Center, it is hard to imagine the challenges that he has faced in his first months of life. Jeffrey was born with a double inlet left ventricle (DILV), a congenital heart defect that affects the valves and chambers of the heart causing oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood. Born at Virginia Hospital Center, Jeffrey spent the first 3 weeks of his life in the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before being discharged to Children’s National Medical Center for his first heart surgery. He will undergo two additional surgeries in the coming months. Providing primary care to low- income or uninsured patients with complex medical conditions is central to APC’s mission. As a medical home, APC has the resources and expertise needed to care for patients like Jeffrey. Jeffrey’s medical care requires more frequent visits to APC, medication administration around- the-clock, and coordination with pediatric specialists. More than 500 children with special healthcare needs receive care from APC pediatricians, nurses and care coordinators. Our care coordina- tors arrange appointments with pediatric specialists, arrange trans- portation to these appointments, and provide access to other community- based resources. “Our life would be very different if APC didn’t exist,” said Jeffrey’s mother, Marisol. “It would be difficult and a struggle to handle Jeffrey’s care. Since APC opened its doors 12years ago as a community benefitprogram of Virginia Hospital

Center, the Hospital has providedmore than $6 million in support of APC’s mission. Virginia HospitalCenter plays a central role in ourcommunity in meeting the healthcare needs of children in need. From January 2001

through December 2012, APC hasenrolled 10,250 children and provided over 125,000 clinicalvisits to low-income and

uninsured Arlington children.

FROM THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR’S DESK

Gonzalo Paz-Soldan, MD, FAAP,Medical director

Gonzalo Paz-Soldan, MD, FAAP

As you walk through the halls of the Arlington Pediatric Center, you can hear the distinct gurgles, sighs and cries of newborns. for twoyears, APC has taken on an even larger role in providing care to newborns in our community as other community resources haveclosed. every child born at Virginia Hospital Center who does not have a pediatrician selected by the time he or she is discharged fromthe Hospital is given provisional enrollment. these newborns receivewell-child and acute care at APC for 15 days regardless of whethertheir family qualifies for APC services. About one half of these newborn patients go on to become permanent patients of APC.

What has this new role meant for APC? An enormous increase in newborn well-child and acute care, with the demand for newbornservices increasing by 270% last year.

Providing access to timely newborn care is at the heart of APC’smission. during the first year of life, well-child visits take place twodays after birth, then at two weeks, two months, four months, sixmonths, nine months and one year. during seven well-child visits, our pediatricians and nurses provide infant care information, assessthe infant’s development and whether developmental milestones arebeing achieved, and can see firsthand how families are adapting to life with their new baby.

APC is an integral part of our patients’ first year of life, and our medical services help thousands of newborns have a healthy start. to our donors, we offer a heartfelt thank you. Community supportfunds 38% of our operating budget. your support means that low-income children in our community have access to healthcare, from their first days of life until age 19. your generosity offers a healthier life and brighter future for a child in need. u

CAREFIRST GRANT SUPPORTS SCRIBES PILOT PROJECT AT APC thanks to a $70,000 grant from Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield, Arlington Pediatric Center is piloting a program on the use of scribesin a medical home. A scribe accompanies the pediatrician during patient examinations and records medical information in the electronic medical record (eMR). Scribes are already successfully used in the Virginia Hospital Center emergency department to increase productivity, efficiency and accuracy of the documentationof the patient's history, physical exam findings, assessment and treatment plan.

this pilot will test if scribes can increase productivity at APC, freeing APC pediatricians from eMR documentation, so they can spend more time with patients and see more patients. thank you,Carefirst, for your support! u

WASHINGTON FORREST FOUNDATION for 10 years, the Washington forrest foundation has been a steadyand consistent partner to APC, providing ongoing support for APC operations.

Braddock Road, also known as Washington forrest. Washington forrest foundation executive director Allison erdle, great grandaughter of Benjamin Smith, said, “the foundation is proud tocarry on our family’s legacy of service to the community. We have the opportunity to see firsthand how the Washington forrest foundation has helped organizations like APC to succeed.” u
