Eduardo* is a remarkable 10-month-old boy who was born at Virginia Hospital Center in November 2010. His family is from Honduras and now lives in the Barcroft Park neighborhood of South Arlington. At his two week well-child check up, he was found to have a heart murmur (an indication of a possible congenital heart defect). Eduardo was seen that same day by a pediatric cardiologist at Virginia Hospital Center’s Cardiology Clinic. He was also referred to Arlington Pediatric Center (APC). The special care required by an infant with a congenital heart condition can overwhelm any parent. As a family-centered medical home, APC provides the coordinated, comprehensive, continuous care that is needed for any family facing a severe medical issue with one of their children. Dr. Gonzalo Paz-Soldan, MD, FAAP, APC’s Medical Director, first treated Eduardo in December. He knew Eduardo would need surgery. He also knew Eduardo’s parents would need help to navigate through the complex requirements of our healthcare system. Dr. Paz-Soldan assigned Paola Ledezma, RN, APC’s Care Coordinator for Children with Special Health Care Needs, to work with Eduardo and his family. As the first step, Eduardo required four separate cardiac medications to control his symptoms. Paola helped his mother understand exactly how and why each medication had to be administered. his year, APC celebrates its first decade of providing a “Medical

Home” to Arlington children in need, offering quality healthcare that is

family-centered and culturally-sensitive. Our commitment to caring for

Arlington’s children is unwavering and our confidence in the community’s

willingness to support our work remains strong and hopeful. It is that

support which keeps us moving forward each day as we brighten the

futures of children in our community. On behalf of the children we serve,

we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the donors and volunteers whose

many contributions to APC make our work possible.

the cardiovascular surgeon. She attended those appointments with the family to serveas an advocate to ensure that vital information was communicated and understood.Eduardo was just 3 months old when he had open heart surgery. The surgery was successful, but home care after surgery is stressful and demanding.

Cleaning and dressing the wound, and watching for signs of distress with such a youngchild can be very tramatic. Eduardo’s mother needed the ongoing support and guidanceof APC pediatricians and Care Coordinators. She said, “APC caregivers helpedme somuchwith the surgery and are always there when I need their help.”Eduardo still has recurring respiratory problems. APC has enrolled him in a program

to receive Synagis, a special immunotherapy given to infants and children at high riskfor complications from infection with the RSV respiratory virus. In just 10 months, littleEduardo has had 27 appointments with APC pediatricians. He is doing very well in termsof his heart, and he is growing and developing well. APC will continue to follow Eduardoclosely, and his mother will continue to receive the support she needs to coordinate hiscare. We can’t wait to see him grow to be a happy toddler!
