PAGPAKIGBAHIN SA POLITIKA: PAMAAGI SA PAGPALAPNAG SANG GOSPEL VALUES +Most Rev. Gerardo A. Alminaza D.D.

Noemi Grace V. Palmares

Indi! Suno kay Pope Francis, “We must be involved in politics because politics is one of the highest forms of charity for it seeks the common good… Working for the common good is a Christian duty”.

Ang dokumento nga Evangelii Nuntiandi nagasiling “For the Church, evangelizing means bringing the good news into all strata of humanity and through its influence transforming humanity from within and making it anew” (EN 18).

Filled With GratitudeFr. Ronald C. De Leon

With a heart filled with so much gratitude I would like to thank Ms. Noemi Grace V.

Palmares for her service to God and to the Church as editor-in-chief of Candle Light for the

past year and 8 months. When I asked her to help us out in our weekly paper, she readily said yes, notwithstanding her incredibly busy schedule at the Office of Continuing Education and Pahinungod of the University of the Philippines Visayas, as mother to her three sons Rap, Ric and Roy, and as wife to Rino. She is not from Jaro nor was there any remuneration attached to the job - but she accepted anyway, because for her it was “an opportunity to be of service to

the Church”. This is what she texted back when I thanked her in a text message last April 11.

Our set up was not ideal nor was it easy. During the past year she has become unbelievably busy so we communicated mostly by text messages and through email. I would send her materials to be edited. The agreed upon day was Tuesday but, more often than not, by Tuesday I still would not be able to send her the complete write ups needed

because of late submissions of articles. This is the reason why I would often start my text message to her with, “I am sorry for sending the articles late.” Just last Wednesday I started my text message with, “My usual apologies,” and then proceeded to inform her that I already sent some articles. Sometimes I would even send articles for editing on a Friday already, embarrassed but shameless because I have no choice since I am not capable of editing especially those written in English. I am thankful for her deep well of patience.

I am sure she will be

embarrassed with this piece but I think expressions of service such as this should be acknowledged to inspire others. There are a lot of people like Noemi in the parish such as our Barangay Apostolic Council coordinators and their ministry coordinators. Many of them would accompany us whenever there are sick calls and masses at the house of the deceased community members: Sisters Elisa, Connie and Yolly and the rest of our ushers, altar servers, lectors, choir members, lay ministers especially those who bring communion to the sick in the barangay, those who count our

collecta, and many others. They do not receive any payment or salary but are so dedicated and active in serving the Church.

Tomorrow I will be marking my 17th year in the priesthood and I am blessed to have been serving the church alongside many inspiring people from Maasin to Lambunao, from Leganes to the West Visayas State University Medical Center, from Mandurriao to Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital, and finally, here in my own parish. I am humbled and edified by lay persons like them who serve God without counting the cost. I am motivated by these individuals who perform their

respective ministries because of their unadulterated love for God. I am moved by their willingness to sacrifice because they love the church greatly. I am stimulated by their fervor in making Jesus known to others through their apostolate. I try to be a better priest because of their example and dedication. The parish is indeed richly blessed for having such kind of parishioners, and non-parishioners like Noemi, whose hearts just overflow with generosity. To God be the glory!

Starting next week Fr. Nathaniel Gentizon will take over as editor-in-chief of CL.

I OWE THE WORLD A SONGYou know the saying ‘Be

careful what you wish for; you just might get it’? Well, two years ago I got what I wished for…and much more!

With my kids already at the age where they have their own weekend agenda, I found myself with nothing much to do on Saturdays. I thought of taking up yoga but never did until I was already with Candle Light (but, no, it was not because of CL). Then I considered reviving my painting hobby but did not have enough inspiration for it. I even attempted to enroll in a Carpentry class but the teacher bluntly told me, “Ano mo lang na ka hakwat sang kahoy man?” Even when I reasoned out that I was sure my male classmates would volunteer to do that for me, he refused to take me in.

And then, (drum rolls, please) one December morning Monsignor Oso invited my ever-supportive husband and me to the JASAC thanksgiving mass. Right after the mass, Father Ronald approached me and asked

how I was. I told him I was OK but that I was bored on weekends and was actually looking for something worthwhile to do with my time. In retrospect, I think I did see his eyes twinkle when I said that – as if he had an aha moment… not the aha as in voila, but more like aha as in gotcha! He then said he had been planning to invite me to work with him in Candle Light. Again, looking back, knowing that Msgr. Oso and Father Ronald are very good friends, I suspect the invitation to the thanksgiving mass must have been part of their conspiracy. But God does work in mysterious ways, and I accepted the invitation with nary an ounce of hesitation. The rest is history.

People have been asking me why, inspite of my busyness, I said yes to Father Ronald; or what really drives me to skip lunch break or stay late into the night editing articles in order to beat press time (and spare Father Ronald from more

stress); or how, one time, I managed to go to work after having spent the night laboring on the fiesta issue until the cathedral bells were already ringing and people were arriving for the first mass the next morning.

Well, below are the first stanzas of a song I learned from the Sisters in our school some 40 years ago. Thanks to my sister Heidi for giving me the lyrics, I share this song with you. It answers the questions I have been asked:

If I have strength I owe the service of the strong

If melody I have, I owe the world a song

If I can stand when all about my post are falling

If I can run with speed when needy hearts are calling

And if my torch can light the dark of any night

Then I must pay the debt I owe with Living Light.

If Heaven’s grace has dowered me with some rare gift

If I can lift a load no other strength can lift

If I can heal some wound no other hand can heal

If some great truths the speaking skies reveal

Then I must go a broken wounded thing

If to a wounded world my gifts no healing bring.

Being with Candle Light for the second time is a gift in itself, a blessing for which I will always be grateful. When I edited each article, it was like unwrapping a gift - the writer sharing his gift of words, the words like outstretched hands revealing God’s good news of hope, love, and redemption. It is heartwarming to see people read the newsletter, sharing the gift of God’s Word. In time, I found myself looking forward to Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when the articles would start coming in – much like anticipating an exciting party. Now I realize that when I accepted Father Ronald’s invitation, it is I who actually received many gifts - friendships, trust, and, most of all, the opportunity to serve.

I continue to owe the world a song.

Friday, September 6 Col 1:15-20Ps 100:1-2, 3, 4, 5Lk 5:33-39

Saturday, September 7Col 1:21-23Ps 54:3-4, 6, 8Lk 6:1-5

pagdeklarar. Kon mabatyagan kag maobserbahan ina sang iban, te maayo, pero wala na ya ginapalapta sang natungdan. Kon tuod gid man nga humble ikaw, te ang iban lang na ya nga tawo ang mamuno; kon indi ka man pagmunuhon ukon dayawon nahanungod sina, wala man kaso kay humility is its own reward.

We need to be generous but it should always be with the right motivation.

And besides, it is their duty to bring those services because they are public officials! When you do something which you are supposed to do, do not expect nor demand that people thank you kay ikaw ya ang nag-aha nga mag-alagad indi ang mga tawo.

Kabay nga makatuon kita sa aton Ginoo nga huluwaran sang pagkamapainubuson kag naghimo sang maayo bangud sa isa lamang ka rason ukon motibasyon: Sia nagahigugma sang labi sa aton.

Pamangkot1. Mapainubuson man bala

kita kasubong kay Jesus?2. Ano ang aton mga

motibasyon sa paghimo sang maayo kag sa pagbulig sa aton isigkatawo?

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Conduct your affairs with humility… Fe Marina S. Siacon

are challenged to take important roles to protect life and consecrate the family. He said, “Our era needs such wisdom more than bygone ages if the discoveries made by man are to be further humanized; for the future of the world stands in peril unless wiser people are forthcoming.

Hall in the compound of the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral on August 25 to listen to Dr. Ligaya Acosta, Director of the Human Life International - Asia.

According to Fr. Randy Doromal, Director of the Jaro Commission on Family and Life, we

famILy.... from page 1 The education of the moral conscience, which makes every human being capable of judging and of discerning the proper ways to achieve self-realization according to his or her original truth, thus becomes a pressing requirement that cannot be renounced.”

The presence of many

persons in the conference manifests the Iloilo families’ concrete response to the local Church’s humble effort to accompany the Christian family on its journey through life and to inspire the rest of society to make generous contributions in the integral advancement of the family.

Sirach, one of the great Old Testament books filled with the wisdom of God, exhorts us today, “My child, conduct your affairs with humility….

17My son, perform your tasks in meekness; then you will be loved by those whom God accepts.

18The greater you are, the more you must humble yourself; so you will find favor in the sight of the Lord.

20For great is the might of the Lord; he is glorified by the humble.

28The affliction of the proud has no healing, for a planat of wickedness has taken root in him.

29The mind of the intelligent man will ponder a parable, and an attentive ear is the wise man’s desire. (Sirach 3:17-18)

Almost every day I attend the 12:15 Mass or, if I can’t make it, I try my best to be at the 5:30 afternoon Mass. Everyday, too, I always see this man who is half paralyzed. Slowly, he will walk to the front seat with the aid of his cane, trying hard to genuflect at the center aisle to give respect to Jesus in the Tabernacle and sit at the front row. I admire him for it seems he is not affected by his physical condition but cares so much not to miss a day attending the Mass.

He is there, attending Mass every day and must have

accepted his fate; what he had, what he is, and what is in store for him. He always smiles when we meet. One time, as he was sharing with people around him the pamphlets of the novena to God the Father, I saw how happy he was. If I were in his place, would I be able to go on without resentment? Could I accept being physically handicapped? Maybe I could not but, with all humility, I would just abide with the will of God.

That is why great respect and love grow in me for those with disability. I can see that they are also happy, especially the “Pushers of Christ” (those who are physically handicapped and could not walk but just sit on a wheelchairs while being pushed by their blind companions). Their humility is so touching. It is so contaminating.

Jesus said today, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted:” According to Rev. Jack Peterson, “Jesus is teaching us that we can work with God and grow in the virtue of humility. We can humble ourselves. By praying for the grace to be humble, truly desiring it, imitating it in those holy souls that God sends into our lives, and regularly practicing acts of charity, we can develop this elusive virtue.”

For me, practicing acts

of charity is not always in giving or sharing material things to others. It can also be you, extending yourself humbly to others with love and gentleness, even in simple conversations only. We must accept with all humility what God wills for us. For the truth is that everything we had and enjoyed were God’s blessings and those blessings that came to our life were more than what come to us that block our path. So, be happy for all these blessings. As Rev. Jack Peterson said, “When we accept the truth that we depend upon our Heavenly Father for our very existence (every breath we take, every smile we receive, every morsel of food we eat, every heartbeat we enjoy), we begin to laugh at our own pride. How can we be haughty when we know that all of our gifts, talents and successes flow from His loving heart? St. Paul asks: “What do

you possess that you have not received?” (1 Corinthian 4:7)

I always believe that humility is a virtue given by God. I have never experienced a bountiful life where everything is there. I believe God brought me to earth poor so that I will always be with Him. I will always call for the love and protection of our beloved Mother, and her spouse, St. Joseph, so that I will always remember that no matter how materially poor I am, I will feel secure and loved knowing I am with the Holy Family.

We all believe (faith) that we are the beloved children of God, equally deserving His blessings and love. Rev. Peterson said, ‘Rather than thinking that we are entitled to respect, honor and a life of ease, we see ourselves as blessed so that we can share with others the bountiful blessings of God’.

aPaT ka kaTaPu.... from page 1 Brgy. Nagkadto man kami sa Sitio Kagsangay, Brgy.

(Lk 17:1)

Ini amo ang: 1) “Kidnapping and hostage

utod, ukon pagsamad sang bahin sang lawas nga wala man sing rason. Apang ginatugotan ini kon may rason medical ukon ikaayo sang kaugalingon nga lawas ukon sang iban.

(CCC2299)

MAGKATEKESIS KITA:

Dios kag templo sang Espiritu Santo.

(Tobias 1:16-18) “KAMI MAN BALA SA GIHAPON?”

kami man gihapon ang magatambong sa sining hilikuton. Kadamo gali sang mga pamatan-on ang nagkari kag nagpakigbahin. I was mistaken!

Wala man ako nagareklamo ukon naga-isip, pero ngaa amo sini?

Apang sang naghiwat kami sang “YouCat” (Youth Catechesis) sang Agosto 10, kon sa diin ang topiko sang katekesis amo ang “Ten Commandments”, NAGSALA AKO! Sala ako kay abi ko
