Sermon Notes
Breaking the Chains We Put on Ourselves
1. Understand the depth of your own indebtedness.“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by
faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.” Romans5:1
2. Value relationships more than rights.• Forgivenessisnotthesameasdenial.Itissimplytreas-
uring the debtor more than the debt!“Here’s another old saying that deserves a second look: ‘Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.’ Is that going to get you anywhere? Here’s what I propose: ‘Don’t hit back at all.’ I f someone strikes you,
stand there and take it. If someone drags you into court and sues for the shirt off your back, gift wrap your best coat and make a present of it. And if someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff.
Live Generously” Matt.5:39-41
3. Beware of the intoxicating effect of un-forgiveness!• Thoseofyouwhoaremarriedknowthatwhenyouare
indebtandsomeonehassomethingonyou,youholdthepower.
“And don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you. Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a might
foothold to the Devil.” Eph.4:26-27
Sermon Notes Cont'd
4. The paradox of extending forgiveness is this: The Giver is the greatest beneficiary of the gift!• Whenwedon’tforgivewemayhurtothers, butwe
destroy ourselves!Forgiveness is healing!Forgiveness is bonding!Forgiveness is liberating!
“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Colossians3:13TO GIVE ALL THE GRACE THAT WILL BE NEEDED BY OTHERS, KEEP ONE EYE ON THE GRACE YOU’VE RE-CEIVED!
• Onethatcannotforgiveothersbreaksthebridgeoverwhichallmustpassiftheywouldeverreachheaven;foreveryonehasneedtobeforgiven.”
