New Year’s Study Group: “Sir Gawain and the Christian Journey” Just after Christmastide, during the mirth and feasting of the New Year, a visitor arrives at the court of King Arthur, a great knight upon a great steed, both of them green from head to toe. The Green Knight’s challenge draws Sir Gawain, the best of Arthur’s knights, on a year-long Christian journey that is both delightful and profound.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a beautiful tale of resolution, temptation, courage, humility, faith, and Christian journeying — an excellent companion as we seek to hold firm to our own New Year’s

commitments, to deepen our Christian faith, and to “put on the whole armour of God.”

Join us this Thursday, February 8, for Session 3: “Gawain and the Three Temptations.” The Study Group meets from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Session Room with The Rev. Dr. Kay Diviney.

Music in Worship: February 4, 2018Presentation of the Lord (observed)

Introit: Nunc Dimittis St. PaulHerbert Howells (1892-1983)Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

–Canticle for Evening Prayer, Book of Common Prayer: the Song of Simeon, taken from Luke 2:29-32

Anthem: Vox dicentisEdward Naylor (1867–1934)Vox dicentis, Clama; Quid clamabo? Exalta vocem tuam in fortitudine. Noli timere, Dic civitatibus Judae, Ecce Deus vester: Ecce Dominus Deus in fortitudine veniet, Et brachium ejus dominabitur: Ecce merces ejus cum eo, et opus illius coram illo. Opus illius, merces ejus cum eo.Sicut pastor gregem suum pascet, In brachio suo congregabit agnos, Et in sinu suo levabit, foetas ipse portabit.

–Isaiah 40: 6-11

The voice of one saying ‘Cry aloud!’ What shall I cry? All fl esh is straw, and all its glory is like the fl ower of the fi eld. Truly, the people are straw: the straw has withered and the fl ower has fallen, but the word of the Lord remains for ever.Up to the high mountain ascend, you who tell good tidings to Zion: lift up your voice with courage, do not be afraid. Say to the cities of Judah, behold your God.Behold, the Lord God will come in might and his arm will prevail: behold, his reward is with him and his work is before his face. As a shepherd he will feed his fl ock; in his arm he will gather the lambs and raise them to his bosom, the new-born he will carry himself.

About this morning’s choral and organ music...This morning’s prelude and postlude feature 17th-century music from the pres-tigious St. Catherine’s Church in Hamburg, North Germany. A pupil of the great Jan Pieterzsoon Sweelinck, Heinrich Scheidemann (1595-1663) was the beloved organist at St. Catherine’s from at least 1629-1663. His Praeambulae were probably written down for teaching purposes, as Scheidemann and his adept contemporaries would have normally improvised similar pieces to precede ser-vices, hymns, or instrumentally-accompanied motets or cantatas.Johann Adam Reincken (c1643-1722) was Scheidemann’s pupil and successor, and occupied both a high social and musical position in church, and also in the Hamburg Opera. Unlike many of his colleagues, Reincken successfully mone-tized his renown and died wealthy. Legend has it that the 35-year-old J. S Bach visited Reincken in 1720, improvising at length for the aging master; Reincken is reported to have said “I thought that this art was dead, but I see that it lives in you.” The Toccata in G can be played on either organ, harpsichord or clavi-chord––a common trait of Italian-infl uenced North German keyboard music. Its multi-sectional form alternates free, rhapsodic writing with more strict, contra-puntal passages.

Herbert Howells began to seriously compose music for the church in 1944, when he served as the choir director at King’s College, Cambridge, England. Howells was asked to compose a setting of the Magnifi cat and Nunc Dimittis for performance in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Howells noted that St. Paul’s had a “prolonged echo” so he decided to employ a slowly moving harmonic rhythm in order that no more than two harmonies would be heard together at any time. The Song of Simeon originated when the aged Simeon held the infant Jesus in his arms, upon Jesus’ fi rst presentation in the temple, which feast we observe today.

Vox dicentis was composed for King’s College, Cambridge in 1911. Edward Naylor also composed for the opera, and his dramatic fl air is evident in the vivid text-painting of this morning’s anthem. The basses are “the voice” at the opening, and then rhetorically ask “what shall I cry?”. “Up to the high mountains” is set to a vigorous fugue, and the closing text, with its allusions to shepherds and lambs, is set to a characteristically lilting pastorale rhythm.- JO

Next in music at St. Andrew and St. Paul...
