Music in Worship: First Sunday of Advent, December 2, 2018 Introit: Of the Father’s Love BegottenCorde natus ex parentis, arr. Terry Schlenker (b. 1957)

Of the Father’s love begotten Ere the world began to be, He is Alpha and Omega; He the source, the ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see Evermore and evermore!

O that birth forever blessed, When the virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bare the Savior of our race; And the Babe, the world’s Redeemer, First revealed His sacred face,Evermore and evermore!

This is He who seers in old time Chanted of with one accordWhom the voices of the prophets Promised in their faithful word; Now He shines, the long-expected; Let creation praise its Lord, Evermore and evermore.

O ye heights of heaven adore Him, Angel hosts, His praises sing,Pow’rs, dominions, bow before Him, And extol our God and King; Let no tongue on earth be silent, Ev’ry voice in concert ringEvermore and evermore!

Christ, to Thee with God the Father And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee,Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving And unwearied praises be: Honor, glory, and dominion, And eternal victoryEvermore and evermore!

-Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (348-413 A.D.) Anthem: The LambKim André Arnesen (b. 1980)

Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee?Gave thee life, and bid thee feed, By the stream and o’er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing wooly bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee, Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee!He is called by thy name, For he calls himself a Lamb: He is meek & he is mild, He became a little child: I a child and thou a lamb, We are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee. Little Lamb, God bless thee.

-William Blake (1757-1827)

About this morning’s choral and organ music…J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a busy man: in addition to composing and perform-ing, he was responsible for music in Leipzig’s four churches, and for teaching at the St. Thomas Choir School. Any composition that he troubled to rework during his career thus merits our careful attention. This is the case with his settings of

Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659 & 660, taken from the so-called “Leipzig Chorales”. Bach wrote early versions of the pieces in Weimar, and reworked them near the end of his life in Leipzig. The first setting, with its me-andering, serpentine bass line, evokes the 17th-c. motet style, in which the lower voices enter imitatively, and provide an accompanimental tapestry for the florid soprano voice, which sings the chorale melody. The world’s restless yearning for the Saviour pervades the entire movement. In BWV 660, two bass voices wrestle in imitation before the melody enters, once again, in the soprano. The typical ba-roque trio, in which two florid voices sing above a steadying bass line, is turned on its head, in a metaphor for the Saviour’s redeeming descent to earth. Of the Father’s Love Begotten is an ancient hymn of the church written by Prudentius, a Spanish magistrate who came to the faith later in life, and whose works were among the most widely read in the Middle Ages. Terry Schlenker’s setting keeps the ancient, mystical atmosphere of the old Gregorian melody intact, by using parallel organum-like harmonies, drones, and free-flowing mixed metres. William Blake’s “The Lamb” is excerpted from his “Songs of Innocence”, and tenderly presents the well-known image of Christ as the Lamb of God. Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen underscores the naïve aspects of Blake’s language through a simple chordal setting. -JO Next in music at St. Andrew and St. Paul...
