On Friday of this week, from 7-

8.30p, we encourage you to

come over to Croghan Hall for a

Meet and Greet with

Marianne Tully, our new In-

terim Principal. This is a great

opportunity, not only for our

school kids and parents, but parishioners too, to have some

quality time together before school starts. As you know, our

award winning school is the principal apostolate of our parish.

The school is the chief means by which our Catholic faith is

handed on. Even if you don’t have a child in the school, we all

have reason to be proud of the achievements of the past and to

be eager for the future.

While the school is the primary means of

handing on the Catholic faith in the parish, it

is by all means not the only. Maria

Barontini, our Pastoral Associate for

Children’s Catechesis, runs an incredible

program for school aged children who are

not in our school on Sunday mornings. You

may know of some families who are disconnected from their

faith, or do not have a church home. Why not get them in-

volved in our program?

Learning about our faith does not end at

graduation, and certainly not at Confirmation.

We are life long learners, disciples of Christ

who are always deepening our Catholic faith.

All year long, Angela Calabro, our Direc-

tor of Catechesis and Evangelization, is

offering numerous programs for adults to enrich their faith for-

mation. Keep tuned into the bulletin and social media to keep

abreast of the incredible offerings we have in our parish!

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

(a Holy Day of Obligation)

Mass Schedule: 7a, 12p-Latin and 7p

Blessing of Herbs will be before 12p & during 7p Mass

This blessing is from the 1964 edition of the Roman

Ritual. The Directory on Popular Piety men-

tions states:

This custom, received into the Rituale Romanum, repre-

sents a clear example of the genuine evangelization of

pre-Christian rites and beliefs: one must turn to God,

through whose word "the earth produced vegetation:

plants bearing seeds in their several kinds, and trees

bearing fruit with their seed inside in their several

kinds" (Gen 1, 12) in order to obtain what was formerly

obtained by magic rites; to stem the damages deriving

from poisonous herbs, and benefit from the efficacy of

curative herbs." (No. 181)

This blessing of herbs comes from Germany, and

formulas for it are found as early as the tenth cen-

tury! It was reserved only to the feast of the As-

sumption and includes herbs, cultivated and wild

flowers (especially those symbolic to our Lady).

The people brought herbs to Church on her feast

not only to secure for themselves another blessed

object, but also to make of the occasion a harvest

festival of thanksgiving to God for His great bounty

manifested in the abundant fruits of the earth. The

herbs were placed on the altar, and even beneath

the altar-cloths, so that from this close contact with

the Eucharist, they might receive a special consecra-

tion, over and above the ordinary sacramental

blessing of the Church.

Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is a beauti-

ful exercise to increase your spirituality and ability to

truly serve our Lord Jesus Christ. The basic premise

set forth by St. Louis Marie de Montfort is simply that

Jesus came into the world through Mary and that for

us to always be assured of being close to Jesus, even

closer than ever before, we should go through

Mary. Consecration means to set aside for a sacred

purpose. Mary’s life was set aside for the sole purpose

of serving our Lord. By following her example, we,

too, can completely give ourselves to Christ in a fun-

damental way that consecrates us to Him. We give our

lives to Him in service and love.

Information Sessions on Total Consecration to Jesus

through Mary will be held after the 8a, 10a, and 12noon Mass on Sunday, 6 August, in Croghan Hall.

Come have a cup of coffee and learn how consecra-

tion can enrich your spiritual life. For questions, con-

tact Lisa Buss.

suggested title: How to Bring Fallen Away Catholics

Back to the Church

What is evangelization all about? What role

does the Church expect ordinary Catholics

to play in spreading the Catholic Faith? Dr.

Scott Hahn, author and renowned theolo-

gian, challenges cradle Catholics to witness to

the Faith through everyday life. He presents proven and

effective ways to touch those who have fallen away from

the Church, even those with the most hardened of hearts.
